ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/8617/live/00b6dcd0-4a83-11ef-aebc-6de4d31bf5cd.pngLiverpool fans may have seen very little of 22-year-old defender Sepp van den Berg since he joined in 2019, but should they let the youngster go? The Dutch under-21 international has only made four first-team appearances for the Reds since signing from PEC Zwolle, having had loan spells at Preston North End, Schalke and last season with Mainz. But, according to reports, he could be set to leave Anfield this summer and head back to the Bundesliga amid interest from Hoffenheim and Mainz. Van den Berg was a regular starter for the German side last campaign, featuring 36 times across all competitions and scoring three goals. When compared to other young defenders across Europe, he stacks up well. According to Opta, among all under-23 defenders, only Everton's Jarrad Branthwaite had a higher duel success rate (68%) in the big-five European leagues in 2023-24 than Van den Berg (65%, minimum 165 duels). Having travelled with the Reds squad for their US pre-season tour, he may yet get a chance to prove himself to new boss Arne Slot. The right side of Liverpool's defence was changeable last season so an opportunity is there, and if Van den Berg was to stay, he could come face to face with fellow Premier League defenders on that list.

Real Sociedad president Jokin Aperribay has denied there are any ongoing talks with Liverpool over a potential deal for 23-year-old Japan winger Takefusa Kubo. Meanwhile, Reds defender Sepp van den Berg is set to leave Anfield this summer, amid interest from German sides Hoffenheim and Mainz.

ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/7e8a/live/ef41ce60-4a6e-11ef-b2d2-cdb23d5d7c5b.jpgEarlier this week we asked you to vote on whether Mohamed Salah, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Virgil van Dijk should be offered new contracts or sold.
The trio all have one year left on their current deal so could leave for free next summer if no solution is found.
The overall consensus was to cash in on Salah but offer captain Van Dijk and Alexander-Arnold new contracts. Here are some of your replies on that vote:
Fraser: Give Mo one last trophy this coming season then let him do what he desires. He deserves whatever he wants as he has done everything for our club. Tony: Salah and Van Dijk need to move on amicably - they both have a sell-on value and this needs to be cashed in and reinvested. Good, loyal players for Liverpool for which we as fans will be eternally grateful. All tenures must end, so let them go for good fees and invest in the future. Michael: How much will it cost to replace Salah? £80m plus? I would like to see him offered a three-year contract. This would give the younger players time to watch, learn and develop their own game. He could still be sold in 18 months' time. Keith: I've wrestled with the Salah debate, but if you look at his statistics for goals and assists then it is hard to argue that selling him is helping the team. He no longer has the same impact as he used too, but I can't see a new signing being better, so keep Salah and definitely Trent Alexander-Arnold. I would sell Van Dijk sadly as he's not been the same since his injury. Lewis: First, give Salah a one-year-contract so he doesn't go for free and sell Van Dijk this summer if we have a replacement for him. Marc Guehi would be a good example. Keep Alexander-Arnold. Indar: Salah has lost his main attribute - pace. Therefore, if we could get good money from Saudi Arabia then he needs to be sold. He is not good enough and he isn't getting any better. He has given loads to the club over the years and given some of us fans the most memorable times ever. But in my opinion, he has to go. ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/a721/live/e53fa740-499a-11ef-aada-8989b38db4a8.jpg

ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/7e8a/live/ef41ce60-4a6e-11ef-b2d2-cdb23d5d7c5b.jpgWith Liverpool's lack of signings so far this transfer window, we asked you whether you were concerned and the positions you would like strengthening.
Here is a selection of your comments:
Mark: You can never rest on your laurels as every other team is getting stronger too. Strengthen when you're on top I say, it used to be the Liverpool way too. Don't leave yourself in a position where you need three, four, five players. One world class player per window should be enough. Guehi and Frimpong for me. We've got goals in the team so tighter at the back will work. Ian: Not too concerned, the new manager is looking at all the players and giving them a chance and it could save us millions in the long term. We will sign but only if they improve what we have got. Slot is in a good position, when a new manager comes in it's because the team is not doing well, in Liverpool's case it is the opposite. We have quality already. Adz: Without any signings, we'll be doomed to a season finishing outside the top four. Our attack lacks the killer edge needed to win matches consistently, and our defence has looked shaky at times. Centre-back, striker, and defensive midfielder needed ASAP. David: How can you expect a new manager to come in and start buying players when he doesn't know exactly what he already has? We don't buy players just for the sake of it. If he thinks there are gaps in the squad we have plenty of time to sort it out. Douglas: I think we are running out of time to do business. We can’t win the Premier League with the current squad and we will also struggle in Europe. Hopefully, business is being done privately without a fuss. Yusuf: If the manager and the board feel that there shouldn't be any signings, trust them. They are the ones who see what happens on the training ground and where things should be improved. But as a fan, pre-season will tell us how the team is coping physically and if any improvement is needed. But consider that there are very talented youngsters too!

Liverpool unveil new 'night forest' away kit..i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/08/02/09/88075807-13701515-Liverpool_have_finally_unveiled_their_away_kit_for_the_2024_25_s-a-3_1722588806644.jpgThe shirt takes inspiration from the green colourway often used in the Reds' away kits, featuring an "earthy dark green and anthracite" design with "washed teal" accents on the cuffs and inside panelling. The match edition of the 'green/night forest' jersey retails for an eye-watering £125, while the version most supporters will purchase will still set them back a hefty £80. There's also a considerable outlay for parents looking to get their kids the latest attire, with prices for youngsters starting at £52 and rising to £60.

I don't see Liverpool dropping out of top four - Alan Shearer..Liverpool finished third last time and I don't see them dropping out of the Champions League places now Arne Slot is in charge. Jurgen Klopp is an incredibly tough act to follow but they still have stacks of quality in their squad, and plenty of options in forward positions. They have not signed anyone yet this summer but I'd be amazed if that is still the case come the end of this month. We will have to wait and see how Slot gets them playing, and at what tempo, and also what happens to some of their established stars. Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah are all now into the last year of their contracts and, while Trent is only 25, Van Dijk is 33 and Salah is 32. I guess we will find out soon if their future is at Anfield, or not. upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/0/0c/Liverpool_FC.svg/180px-Liverpool_FC.svg.png

Ipswich 0-2 Liverpool: What Arne Slot said:i2-prod.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/news/article33495164.ece/ALTERNATES/s1200d/0_ipswich-town-v-liverpool-premier-league-portman-road.jpgArne Slot spoke to TNT Sports after Liverpool's victory over Ipswich: "The first taste [of Premier League football] in the first half was maybe as expected because they were all on top of us, very aggressive. Second half was a joy to watch." On what he said at half time: "First thing was we don't have to speak about tactics if you don't lose so many duels. I think we needed to win the long balls through the air. That helped and gave us control. I don't think Ipswich could keep up with the tempo in the second half." On the second half improvements: "If a team plays all over the pitch 1v1, do not always play the ball short constantly. I didn't see them fighting for it in the first half, we lost almost every long ball. In the second half they were ready and then gas opened up and you could see we can play quite good football." On Liverpool's midfield: "I don't think our problem in the first half was midfield, our problem is we lost too many duels. A lot had been said about our signings but I saw three or four players coming off the bench and they were already good to play"

Here are some of your comments:
Liverpool fans
Eddie: It was a slow start against a very good Ipswich team who ran themselves into the ground in the first half. What I liked about this game was that Slot changed things for the second half and we really did start to play good football. We still need a couple of players in - definitely a left-back and a left-sided centre-half, and extra cover in midfield. Tommy: Liverpool were agonisingly slow in the first half and very fortunate not to be a couple of goals down by half-time. The back four were horrendous. There was a big improvement second half but if we start a match like that against one of the big teams we will get picked off. Garry: A good result, and it was probably expected that newly promoted team would want to give an account of themselves. Liverpool usually take time to get going, but I worry that our passing needs to improve overall. It seems we get closed down too easily and are subject to mistakes in passing. However, we've retained our ruthless counter-attacking strategy. Great team performance.

Liverpool unveil 3rd kit for the 2024-25 season - and will wear the strip for the first time at Old Trafford in clash with rivals Man United...by Michael Pavitti.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/08/27/11/88969921-13783465-The_kit_is_part_of_Nike_s_Together_We_Rise_collection_which_is_c-m-4_1724754500479.jpgLiverpool will debut their new third kit in their high-profile Premier League clash with Manchester United on Sunday, the club have announced. Arne Slot's side will travel to Old Trafford on Sunday as the Reds bid to maintain their perfect start to the Premier League season. Liverpool players will wear their new white third kit during the match, which was released by the club on Tuesday. The shorts for the third kit are black with white socks, while the goalkeeper kit worn by Alisson Becker will be green. The kit includes a vertical Nike logo as part of the brand's ‘Together We Rise’ collection, which is claimed to celebrate the women’s game and its acceleration in world sport. 'Each third kit is inspired by the club's unique story, distinct identity, culture and diverse communities. LFC's shirt is 'rebellious by design' and a celebration of female punk artists who pioneered a new sound in the city,' Liverpool said. 'It fuses the iconic club colours with a loud mixed pattern in homage to the city's fearless artists and features in parts the Liver bird feathers. i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/08/27/09/88969321-0-image-a-31_1724747604631.jpg'On the reverse of the jersey, the 97 emblem encased by the eternal flames sits proudly at the nape of the neck in memory of those children, women and men who were unlawfully killed as a result of the Hillsborough disaster.' Liverpool added that when the kit is won in European competition by the men's team this season, it will also feature the LFC Foundation patch on the reverse. The Reds have enjoyed a strong start to the Premier League season, winning their opening two matches under Arne Slot. Slot enjoyed a winning start at Anfield on Sunday with Luis Diaz and Mohamed Salah scoring in a 2-0 win over Brentford. Liverpool had also won their season opener 2-0 against Ipswich. Slot will face his biggest test yet in the early stages of his Liverpool reign when the Dutchman takes his side to Old Trafford on Sunday.

Liverpool 2-0 Brentford: What Arne Slot said:i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/08/25/12/88909107-13777825-Arne_Slot_has_stated_he_wants_his_players_to_deploy_a_risk_rewar-a-10_1724584078567.jpgLiverpool boss Arne Slot has been speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "It was a good start. Most importantly, we did not concede much. The only big chance we conceded was a set-piece and that is always so difficult when you play Brentford. "They can threaten in many ways, but one is certainly set pieces and we controlled that quite well, apart from that one moment. One of their set-pieces also led to our first goal, which was pleasing to see." "To get a great start like this, you have to work really hard. The boys kept on working really hard without the ball, which saw us get better and better and better throughout the second half. That then led to many good chances. The only thing we didn't do is kill the game earlier." On the control Liverpool had in the second half: "What I mean when I say control is what we also do when we are without the ball. We work really hard for the other team not to create anything at all. "With the ball, we tried to get into situations where we want our best players to be in and that worked well in the second half." "In nine out of 10 games, if you get equal chances to your opponent, it is likely that we will win. We have got one of the best, maybe the best, goalkeeper in the league and we have some very good attackers as well. "What we do, as staff, is get them in these positions and then the players work hard to make sure the other team doesn't create." On winning his first two league games: "The players came back after three weeks of holiday and, in most cases, two weeks before the start of the games, but they came back really strong, physically. "Compliment to the players for how they came back and, like I have said, we haven't changed much compared to the former regime, so it is not so difficult for them to start playing again. That was a very positive thing." On his first competitive experience at Anfield: "The fans loved to see the team playing really well, but they also loved to see the team working very hard. "I liked what I saw, so if I like it then mostly the fans will like it. So, it was a very good day for us. "We won against Ipswich and won against Brentford - two good teams - but I'm not expecting them to be in the top six in the upcoming year, so there still a lot to prove for us in the upcoming weeks and months."

Here are some of your comments:
Liverpool fans
Ken: A composed performance against an obdurate opponent. Unlike yesteryear, there wasn't any chance of this Liverpool team relinquishing control inexplicably, as the passing and movement was efficient throughout. I quite enjoyed seeing out the game with minimum fuss. Whilst the tempo is quite measured, the dizzying attacking gear is still a sight to behold! Marilyn: Some beautiful moves and great football! I would have liked more threats on goal late on, with other teams scoring big, but we seemed to settle for two goals instead. Rex: Brilliant in parts - slick and fluid. We thoroughly deserved the points. My one criticism would be that we need to develop more of a killer instinct. We need to go for the jugular rather than over passing to each other in midfield. I can't help but think that Manchester City would have put more than two goals past them. Nevertheless, very encouraging and often very entertaining. James: Encouraging start but, with all due respect to Ipswich and Brentford, the fixture list has been kind to us. Harder tests are coming up! We need our two second-half performances for the full 90 minutes - and let's stop talking about the difference between Slot and Klopp! i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/08/25/19/88915359-13778403-Salah_has_scored_in_Liverpool_s_opening_two_matches_of_the_Premi-a-11_1724610336008.jpgLiverpool 2-0 Brentford

Liverpool are planning to open contract talks with Salah in the near future. The Reds hope to have the 32-year-old's future settled before the January transfer window. Alternatively, Liverpool expect Salah, defender Virgil van Dijk and goalkeeper Alisson to all move to Saudi Arabia next summer. Liverpool are keen to offer defender and captain Virgil van Dijk a new deal to extend his stay at Anfield beyond the summer. Meanwhile, Liverpool and Newcastle United are likely to have to pay a release clause - of above the current £70m asking price - to sign 24-year-old England defender Marc Guehi, if he signs a new Crystal Palace deal. Pumas UNAM manager Gustavo Lema says Liverpool tried to sign their 23-year-old Mexico winger Cesar Huerta.

Here are some of your replies:Robel: Darwin Nunez. Where does he fit in this team and what is his part? Given his wages and price tag, will he be OK becoming a back-up? Diogo Jota seems to be (rightly) first choice for Arne Slot and he can also play false none. So what's to become of Darwin? Chief: No-one is talking about the ruthless dumping of Wataru Endo. He worked wonders last season to pull us out of a dire situation, after we missed out on our primary targets. Now he has been cut off at the knees, with apparently no way back into this style of play. I feel for the guy. Anthony: The one thing I don't think people are talking about is the players who are yet to play. Harvey Elliott, Endo and Nunez, to name a few, have all been sparingly used in the first three games. After the international break, we move to two games a week and that is when we will have a better understanding of where we are in terms of potential. The next few games will tell all. Smudger: There were a couple of interesting signings at the end of the window - but what does that mean for Caoimhin Kelleher? He is a talented goalkeeper who is Premier League quality, but will be spending another season as our number two and then what? Will he stay and be number two behind Giorgi Mamardashvili or will he leave? Has Mamardashvili signed to be number two behind Alisson? Brendan: Luis Diaz's sensational form. He looks like the player he was before injury and his father's kidnap - with his pace, trickery, guile, link-up play, ability on the counter-attack and clinical finishing. Mo Salah gets the headlines, but Diaz has been every bit as good. Jay: Nobody is talking about how Trent Alexander-Arnold is nailed on to go to Real Madrid. Yes, he is a Red through and through, but he is also good enough to be playing for Real, especially as a couple of old hands have retired from there this summer. As a life-long Liverpool fan of over 40 years, I would gladly wave him off with thanks and good wishes, knowing he will do fantastic there.

ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/7e8a/live/ef41ce60-4a6e-11ef-b2d2-cdb23d5d7c5b.jpgWe asked you for your views on how Liverpool have started the season - and where you thought they might finish.
Almost half of all respondents believe the Reds will win the Premier League title, and your comments suggest supporters are happy with how Arne Slot's reign at Anfield has started.
Here's a snapshot:Gus: I think the team looks good. Mohamed Salah looks really sharp. My only concern would be down the line if and when we get injuries, which will happen for sure like every season for every team. It would be good to have another defensive midfielder like everybody is already saying, but I will agree with those who say don't buy for the sake of buying. Richard: When Jurgen Klopp announced he was leaving, I said that whoever took over was inheriting a club run at grade A from top to bottom. Slot has stamped his own way on the squad but subtly, tweak here, tweak there. I even said the squad just needs a couple of tweaks, nothing too drastic. Let's see what the autumn brings - so far, so good. Toby: Amid a summer of anticipation but uncertainty with the departure of Klopp, I don't believe many people were expecting the start we've had. While the likes of Salah and Trent Alexander-Anrold have continued to play with their flowing confidence and superb technical ability, it is Gravenberch who has arguably been the biggest success story. Title race is on! Joel: It's a good start by Liverpool and Slot, but it's only three games in so I'm not getting carried away. Slot seems to have the measure of the Premier League and its big players. I've been impressed by him. Now we just need Mo, Trent and Virgil van Dijk to get their pens out and sign. Gez: Gravenberch has been sensational in his new defensive midfield role, to the point that we're no longer missing someone to play the number-six position. In fact, he could arguably be the best number six in the Premier League, especially when he bursts forward with skill and pace before threading a pass through to Liverpool's quality forward line.

Liverpool Captain and legend Ron Yeats has died aged 86..i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/09/07/12/89387359-13824095-Former_Liverpool_captain_Ron_Yeats_has_died_at_the_age_of_86_the-a-33_1725707079590.jpgLiverpool will lower flags to half mast across club sites on Saturday following the death of Anfield legend Ron Yeats at the age of 86. Yeats was part of the Liverpool side that won the Second Division title under Bill Shankly in 1962, before going on to win two top division titles, the FA Cup - the club's first in 1965 - and three Charity Shields. He made 454 appearances before leaving for Tranmere in 1971. More than 400 of those appearances were as captain, with only Steven Gerrard leading the team on more occasions. After signing Yeats from Dundee United in 1961, Shankly famously said to the media: "Walk around him. He's a colossus." Asked about his greatest achievements at Anfield, Yeats once said: "Being the captain that took the club out of the Second Division after eight years was a very, very proud moment. "To follow that by being the first captain of Liverpool to lift the FA Cup is something I am very proud of. "I do not go round with the medals on my chest- it is just there for me to say." Yeats returned to Liverpool as chief scout in 1986 and eventually retired in 2006. A Liverpool club statement said: "The thoughts of everyone at LFC are with Ron's wife, Ann, all of his family and his friends at this incredibly sad time." i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/09/07/12/89387683-13824095-Yeats_top_led_Liverpool_to_their_first_FA_Cup_success_in_1965_ag-a-34_1725707079591.jpg Ron Yeats, top, led Liverpool to their first FA Cup success in 1965 against Leeds United at Wembley

Match report by Emlyn Begley, BBC Sport journalist at AnfieldCallum Hudson-Odoi and unbeaten Nottingham Forest stunned Liverpool at Anfield to end Arne Slot's perfect start as Reds boss. The substitute cut in from the left and curled an inch-perfect shot into the far bottom corner, which Alisson could not reach. This was their first win at Liverpool in any competition since 1969. The home side's confidence was high at Anfield coming into the game after three wins out of three without conceding a goal. And Liverpool had the better chances, certainly in the first half. The hosts went closest before the break when Luis Diaz chased a lost cause, cut in and hammered a shot against the near post from a tight angle. Forest keeper Matz Sels pulled off a good save to keep out an Alexis Mac Allister header and got lucky moments later when he almost spilled Diaz's effort into his own net. But Forest did create more after the break, with Morgan Gibbs-White and Anthony Elanga shooting off target before Hudson-Odoi's beauty. Forest fans were jubilant and the Liverpool support tried to get their team going, but they did not fashion many clear chances to equalise. The visitors move into fourth spot in the fledgling Premier League table with two wins and two draws. Liverpool are two places and one point above them.
