Speaking on The Jurgen Klopp Story, a BBC documentary about the departing Liverpool boss, former Reds defender Mark Lawrenson said: "He is the closest to [Bill] Shankly I think they've had. "Just the way he is with the supporters, the club, he gets the history and everything. He even embraces the old lads like myself, whereas in the past one or two of the former managers didn't really want us around, but he's not like that. He points you out to people, he will grab people over and say 'hey, this fella won five league titles' and all that kind of stuff. "I would say the best thing about him is his man-management. Liverpool's supporters spent much of the 3-3 draw with Aston Villa indulging in what sounded like a dress rehearsal for the farewell they plan to give the beloved Klopp when he takes his leave. It is the end of a golden era in which Klopp won the Champions League, returned the title to Anfield for the first time in 30 years and won both domestic cups, including the League Cup this season. Liverpool will, in time, announce Feyernoord coach Arne Slot as Klopp's replacement but the final day of the Premier League season at Anfield will all be about paying tribute to the charismatic German who has brought them so much joy since he arrived in October 2015.

Thiago and Matip to leave Liverpool at end of season..Midfielder Thiago Alcantara and defender Joel Matip will leave Liverpool at the end of the season, the club have confirmed. Former Spain international Thiago, 33, joined Liverpool from Bayern Munich in 2020 and made 98 appearances during his time at Anfield. Matip, 32, has played 201 times and scored 11 goals for Liverpool since his arrival from Schalke in 2016. He said he has "burst into tears reading" fans letters "about what the club has meant to some people". On his time at the club: "A decade of your life is massive, and I will not forget a day. Liverpool's fans made it their business to dedicate the whole occasion to giving thanks and paying tribute to the manager who has brought such success to the club in a nine-year reign. And Klopp's players delivered their part of the bargain with a comfortable three points in an atmosphere that was part carnival and part a sad farewell to the German, who was given a rapturous reception before kick-off and serenaded throughout. Liverpool owner John W Henry flew in from Boston to pay his own tribute to Klopp, whose crowning achievements were winning the Champions League in 2019 - the club’s sixth win in the tournament - and their first league title in 30 years the following season. The game itself was almost a sideshow. Alex Mac Allister headed Liverpool ahead in the 34th minute from Harvey Elliott's cross, and Jarell Quansah added a second from almost on the goalline six minutes later as they finished the season third in the Premier League after winning the Carabao Cup. The goals came after Wolves had Nelson Semedo sent off by referee Chris Kavanagh after a Video Assistant Referee review for a high challenge on Mac Allister. The Kop led the deafening tributes to Klopp as he cut a low-key-figure during the game, rarely prowling the touchline, preferring to stay seated alongside his loyal long-term assistants Peter Krawietz and Pep Lijnders, who will both leave Anfield with him. Here are some of your responses:
Rick: Slot and FSG need to extend the contracts of Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold and, if possible, Mohamed Salah, but if he won't sign an extension, then they need to sell and use the profit on an attacking right-winger. We need depth at centre-back and probably an understudy at right-back if Alexander-Arnold moves to midfield. Mark: 1. Get Trent to sign a new contract. 2. Sell Mo to pay for Trent's new contract. 3. Sign a new striker. Will: Replace Darwin Nunez with a player who will not only score goals but also let Salah return to his former role closer to goal. Figure out where Trent wants to play. Bring in a strong left-sided centre-back who can eventually replace Van Dijk. The rest is peachy - we just need players to stay fit and keep developing. Ken: Slot's first point of business will be to secure the futures of Van Dijk, Alexander-Arnold, Salah and Alisson to avoid unnecessary conjecture. A dynamic defensive midfielder such as Ederson at Atalanta will be required along with a few smart additions to the squad. Jim: Slot needs to make us more difficult to play against so a top central defender and tough defensive midfielder are top priority along with a more clinical striker to convert more of the many chances we make into goals. Subject to the current players who might leave, Slot should go for three new signings and renewing team spirit. Rob: Liverpool need a solid, boring, defensive midfielder who can play the majority of games with Wataru Endo as back up. Up front we need to find a way to get 30 games a season out of Diogo Jota - otherwise we need to bring in a finisher. Unfortunately Nunez and Luis Diaz can’t be relied on to put away the big chances in a tight game.
