Sports Personality of the Year: Sir Kenny Dalglish wins Lifetime Achievement award..ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/AAAE/production/_132049634_lifetimeachievement.jpgLiverpool and Scotland legend Sir Kenny Dalglish will be honoured with the Lifetime Achievement award at BBC Sports Personality of the Year. The 72-year-old won eight league titles and three European Cups as a player and manager at Anfield after joining the club from Celtic in 1977. Dalglish, who also led Blackburn to the title, is Scotland's most-capped male player and joint record goalscorer. "Receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award is truly an honour," he said. "I have always believed in the importance of team success, and I wouldn't be where I am today without all of the players I've played with, the people I've worked for, and the supporters that stood by me, so this is for them." Glasgow-born Dalglish began his career at Celtic, where he won four Scottish league titles before Liverpool paid a then British record transfer fee of £440,000 to sign him. In his first season with the Merseyside club he scored 31 goals, including the only goal in the 1978 European Cup final against Bruges at Wembley. He would go on to win a further two European Cups and five league titles before becoming player-manager at the age of 35 in May 1985. "To go from the dressing room to the manager's office, I wasn't always the most comfortable, but I had fantastic support from senior people at Liverpool," Dalglish said. "The most comfortable place for me as a player was in the dressing room. I missed the dressing room, but you've got to move on in your life and that is what destiny was telling me, move on." ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/4B73/production/_132051391_gettyimages-93390042.jpgLiverpool won a domestic Double in Dalglish's first season as player-manager at LiverpoolDespite his unease, Dalglish thrived in the role as Liverpool claimed their first domestic league and cup Double in 1986, and two more league titles before he announced his shock resignation in February 1991. Dalglish was the club's manager at the time of the Hillsborough disaster in 1989. Ninety-seven Liverpool fans died as a result of a crush during an FA Cup semi-final against Nottingham Forest at Sheffield Wednesday's Hillsborough stadium. The Scot ensured the club was represented at the fans' funerals and, along with his wife Marina, helped support bereaved families. In a biopic about Dalglish's life, Marina and their daughter Kelly spoke about the impact of the Hillsborough disaster on him, and how it eventually led to his resignation. After leaving Liverpool, where he had ended his playing career with 515 appearances and 172 goals, Dalglish took charge at Blackburn Rovers and guided the club to the Premiership title in 1995. Short spells at Newcastle United and back at Celtic followed and, after an 11-year break from management, he returned to Liverpool in 2011 to lead them to League Cup success in 2012 - the club's first trophy in six years. He was sacked three months later after an eighth-place Premier League finish. Speaking about Liverpool, where he is known as 'King Kenny', Dalglish said: "The football club means everything to ourselves as a family. "Glasgow and Liverpool are very similar. Obviously, they have shipyards with two teams in the city. But for me, the people were fantastic as well. They've got a real sense of humour and they take time to talk to you." On the international stage, Dalglish played 102 times for Scotland, scoring 30 goals. Fellow football legends Sir Alex Ferguson, George Best, Sir Bobby Charlton and Pele have previously won the Lifetime Achievement award.

Liverpool 'utterly condemns' damage to Manchester United team bus..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/C587/production/_132076505_united3.jpg Fans lined the streets as Manchester United and Liverpool's team buses made their way to Anfield on SundayLiverpool said it "utterly condemns" damage caused to Manchester United's team bus after a bottle was thrown as it made its way to Anfield on Sunday. In a statement, the club said any fans found guilty of throwing objects would face serious consequences. A video posted on social media shows a hand holding a glass bottle, then the word "go" being shouted before it is launched at the window of the coach. Liverpool drew 0-0 with their arch-rivals in the Premier League encounter. "Liverpool Football Club utterly condemns the actions that led to damage being caused to the Manchester United team bus during its arrival at Anfield this afternoon," the statement read. "We are aware of footage of the incident circulating online and are working with Merseyside Police to fully investigate and identify those responsible. "Any individuals found guilty of this reprehensible behaviour will also face the full force of the club's sanction process." This is not the first instance of an opposition team bus being pelted with objects at an away ground. In 2018, Manchester City's bus was attacked before their Champions League quarter-final with Jurgen Klopp's side at Anfield. The Reds apologised and called the behaviour "completely unacceptable". Then in April 2023, Greater Manchester Police launched an investigation after Liverpool's coach was attacked on its journey back from the Etihad Stadium following a league match.

Virgil van Dijk denies Roy Keane claim of 'arrogance' about Manchester United comments..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/14A8A/production/_132081648_gettyimages-1862706948.jpg Liverpool had 69% possession and attempted 34 shots without scoring on SundayLiverpool's Virgil van Dijk has denied Roy Keane's claim he was being arrogant in his comments about Manchester United after their goalless draw. After Sunday's match at Anfield, Reds captain Van Dijk said "there was only one team trying to win the game". Former United midfielder Keane, working as a Sky Sports pundit, said there was "arrogance coming out of him [Van Dijk], dissing United like that". "I like Roy Keane, if he said that then it's fine," said Van Dijk. "He is Manchester United throughout and I understand he could react like that but I felt what I said and there is absolutely no arrogance in that. "Everyone who watched the game probably felt the same. We move on. We had the opportunity and we couldn't score and that's the frustrating part." ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/240/cpsprodpb/15303/production/_132078768_gettyimages-1862603902.jpgLiverpool had 69% possession and attempted 34 shots without managing to score against a United side that adopted a defensive approach to the game. It was the first home game Liverpool had failed to win this season and meant the Merseysiders dropped a point and a place behind Premier League leaders Arsenal, who beat Brighton, after 17 games. "Maybe [we were] trying to force it a little bit at times and we could have made a better decision but it was hard to break the low block down," added Netherlands international Van Dijk. "You push, you push, you push and try to do everything in your power but it was one of those days we couldn't find the right decision to score a goal. "At times - I won't say every time - we forced it too much to find a solution which wasn't there but that's football."

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has told any supporter "not in the right shape" for Saturday's top-of-the-table Premier League encounter with leaders Arsenal to give their ticket to someone else.ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/480/cpsprodpb/11922/production/_132107917_jurgenklopp.jpgKlopp - whose side are a point behind the Gunners - criticised the Anfield atmosphere during Wednesday's 5-1 Carabao Cup quarter-final win over West Ham. The Reds galloped to their joint-biggest win of the season to book a two-legged last-four encounter with Fulham. Yet, despite goals for his side from Dominik Szoboszlai, Cody Gakpo, Mohamed Salah and Curtis Jones, who scored twice, Klopp felt the atmosphere inside the stadium was flat. That was even though it was just the second time there were 57,000 present after the opening of the upper tier of the Anfield Road Stand. After Sunday's goalless draw with Manchester United, television pundit Gary Neville said: "The atmosphere was the worst I've seen at Anfield ever. "I've always been complimentary of Liverpool fans. It's the biggest crowd they've had here in 60 or 70 years but it's the quietest crowd I've seen in this game." And Klopp was no more complimentary after the win over West Ham. "In the first half, when the boys played exceptionally, I was not overly happy with the atmosphere behind me," he said. "I asked people: 'What do they want?' We changed a lot of things and we dominated West Ham like crazy and missed chances. If I was in the stands, I would be on my toes, 1,000%. "I don't know if the Man United game was that bad that we have to say sorry we didn't smash them?" ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/59BA/production/_132107922_curtisjones.jpgOn Saturday, Liverpool entertain an Arsenal side who will not have played for six days since their 2-0 win against Brighton. The Gunners lead the Premier League, although Aston Villa can go top by beating Sheffield United on Friday. "We need Anfield on Saturday," Klopp said. "Arsenal didn't play this week. Anyone who knows anything about them knows they will be prepared, so we need Anfield on their toes from the first second, without me having an argument with the opposition coach. "If it is too much football in December, if you are not in the right shape, give your ticket to somebody else."

SATURDAY 23rd DECEMBER 2023 - PREMIER LEAGUE
Liverpool 1 (Salah 29) Arsenal 1 (Gabriel 4)
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/EBC1/production/_132135306_gettyimages-1877581871.jpg No Premier League fixture has featured as many goals (home and away) as Liverpool v Arsenal (186).
Report By Phil McNulty, Chief football writer at Anfield.Arsenal maintained their place at the top of the Premier League after a thrilling draw with Liverpool at Anfield. Victory for either side would have put them top of the table at Christmas but they had to settle for a share of the points in an entertaining encounter. Arsenal delivered the perfect start when defender Gabriel headed home from Martin Odegaard's free-kick after only four minutes. However, Liverpool regrouped and were level after 29 minutes when Mohamed Salah thrashed a finish high past Gunners keeper David Raya at his near post after collecting Trent Alexander-Arnold's raking pass. In between, Liverpool looked to be denied a clear penalty when Odegaard handled and after that Jurgen Klopp's side had the better opportunities, although Arsenal were always a threat. Substitute Harvey Elliott grazed the outside of the post while Alexander-Arnold wasted the best chance of the half when he blasted against the bar after Liverpool swamped Arsenal on the counter-attack. ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/240/cpsprodpb/5369/production/_132135312_gettyimages-1870877761.jpgLiverpool were left counting the cost of the failure to find the finishing touch for the second successive league game at Anfield. They were held to a draw by a stubborn Manchester United last Sunday and had to settle for a point once more in a contest of much higher quality against Arsenal, responding to Gabriel's early strike with another magnificent goal from Salah. Manager Jurgen Klopp will reflect on two big moments which mean his side stay behind the Gunners going into Christmas after an often-frenetic meeting at Anfield. Liverpool will be furious that they seemed to be denied a clear penalty when Odegaard handled in the first half and Alexander-Arnold should have buried what could have been the match-winner late on. They restricted Arsenal's opportunities in the second half but this is an outcome that will satisfy Mikel Arteta's side and perhaps, most of all, new Club World Cup champions Manchester City. ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/0675/production/_132135610_gettyimages-1877759562.jpgichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/4B99/production/_132135391_gettyimages-1877758956.jpg

Kostas Tsimikas: Liverpool defender 'out for a long time' with broken collarbone.. ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/ADA5/production/_132135444_gettyimages-1870878104.jpgKostas Tsimikas joined Liverpool from Greek side Olympiakos in August 2020 Liverpool defender Kostas Tsimikas faces a lengthy spell out after he suffered a broken collarbone during their 1-1 draw with Arsenal at Anfield. The Greece left-back landed awkwardly after a touchline coming together with Bukayo Saka and his momentum saw him knock over Reds boss Jurgen Klopp. Liverpool's first-choice left-back Andy Robertson is already out injured. Klopp told Sky Sports that Tsimikas' collarbone was "definitely broken" and "he is out for a long time". Robertson sustained a shoulder injury that required surgery while on Scotland duty in October and is not expected to return until next month at the earliest. Klopp said Tsimikas' injury "massively overshadowed" a largely positive performance for his side against the Gunners. "It is hard for us to swallow with the Robbo [Andy Robertson] situation," Klopp said. Klopp said he was not personally injured after being upended just inside the technical area. He added: "I thought it wasn't really a problem because I had no pain. I would happily give my collarbone and he would be fit again. "I was completely fine in that moment. I thought Kostas was as well but he said 'no it's broken'. ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/240/cpsprodpb/3875/production/_132135441_gettyimages-1877574092.jpg"Of course that's not cool directly in front of you when you are kind of involved. I wasn't sure if I fell on him or how it happened." Arsenal winger Saka said his collision with Tsimikas was an unfortunate accident rather than the result of any malice. "I heard he has gone to hospital and I want to apologise. I didn't mean it of course," Saka said. "For me it was just a 50-50 and I've gone shoulder to shoulder with him. I didn't see him but he must have taken a bad fall. "I didn't see that he went into Jurgen Klopp either. I was focused on running forward because I didn't think it was a foul."

Here are some of your comments:
Liverpool fansJames: Much better performance than against United- more energy and cohesion. A draw was probably fair but we could have won it in the second half with calmer play. Atmosphere was superb, as was the game. Tim: Cant beat Manchester United or Arsenal at home shows we are not going to win the league. We are not at top level at the moment. Saying that the team battled well but we were at home. Two good sides going at it made a great game to watch. Mark: Thought we were the better side against a very good Arsenal team. Frustrating not to win it with Trent’s chance. But we are a work in progress with a brand new midfield which is still gelling together. More than happy where we are, but injuries, as with other teams are beginning to be of concern. Niall: So much more to come from this team, need to retain possession more in the final third and have more patience. Still second with huge improvements ahead - Title winners, next year if not this.

Liverpool 1-1 Arsenal: Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk to speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "A very good game to play in. We had our moments, them too as they are a good team. An intense game for both sides. We got one point but now there's not much time to dwell on it so much." On whether Arsenal are the best team they have faced this season: "[Manchester] City are a very good team as well, but Arsenal will be up there. We hope to be up there. We will really push them." On the busy Christmas schedule: "We lost a player today as well, it is a delicate situation. On Tuesday we play our third game in nine days. It takes a toll. It does a lot mentally and physically." ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/4AB9/production/_130692191_gettyimages-1587414249.jpg

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp to Amazon Prime: "We tried to find what was the Liverpool way and it looks a little bit like throwing hurdles in front of us and finding ways to get over it. We played an incredible game and then it was just 1-0 which was really strange! That's the way it is in football. With the most difficult situation in the whole game probably, we make it 2-0. "It's wonderful. That's a super goal [from Diogo Jota]. Another player who could have been in contention [for MOTM] was Wataru Endo, what a game he played. "We've created a lot of chances recently and haven't used an awful lot of them but in the end it's about performing. We've played four games in 10 days and you just have to get through it. Now we have five days between now and the next game so it feels like we should go on holiday? No, the boys will have two days off with the family. "It was a great first goal. Cody Gakpo played really well - there were so many good combinations. A striker needs these situations. This time the ball is in. In general, the game we played was exactly how we wanted to play. In that time they had no solutions but we left the door open and that's how it is. "[Darwin Nunez] is an incredible finisher but if a striker doesn't score, the whole system is not the same. You question everything. It's not just the outside world, but you question everything. But it was just in the moment and he has it so it's all good."

Here are some of the top comments:
Liverpool fans
Tricky: It was a decent, and reasonably resilient performance. It was disappointing that two perfectly good goals were disallowed. This is very poor, and the onfield and subsequent VAR interventions require further work. Great to see Jota back and firing immediately. We're going to need him and Nunez to deliver when we're without King Mo during the Africa Cup of Nations. Ben: A dominant first half and a nicely taken goal. We started the second half in the same way; however, the second (unfair) disallowed goal hurt our rhythm. Our players reacted like we were being hard done by and Burnley gathered hope. In the end, it all worked out and the better team won but it became nervy for a while due to those decisions. Trent Alexander Arnold should play where Wataru Endo is - fact. Ken: Made it unnecessarily nervy due to overcomplicating play in the final third and two awful subjective decisions by the officials; one by Tierney and one by Hooper, both of whom have previous with Klopp. Thank God for Jota who, unlike his fellow forwards, was clinical with the one chance he got. He's better than Figo, don't you know! Fraser: Game should have been put to bed in the first half. We wasted a lot of chances and our finishing just wasn't as clinical as it should have been. But hey, a win is a win and we got the three points in the end. On the plus side, glad to see Darwin Nunez finally end his goalscoring drought. But more importantly, it's great to have Jota back. upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/0/0c/Liverpool_FC.svg/180px-Liverpool_FC.svg.png

On the second disallowed goal and an apparent push on Mohamed Salah into an offside position: "Only somebody who has never played football can make this an offside. It's insane when you see that. "Why do referees create their own view on something? We all watch football and need the referee but we need them to make the right interpretations of the rules. It's like, wow. Handball is sometimes handball and all these kinds of things."

Here are some of the top comments:
Liverpool fans
Matt: Chaotic, edge-of-the-seat stuff, again! Still not at our very best, but still winning, week in, week out and top of the league! John: Good game for neutral but worrying to home supporters. Must take chances and press harder and quicker in first half. Better opposition would have beaten us. Need to be more decisive and direct. Don’t like this passing back all the time. It's always predictable and mistakes at back will lead to goals. Paul: Fantastic result. Some real good passages of play. I thought the penalties were soft. I wouldn't have given them but letter of law there was contact. Four goals from 34 shots is a poor return so even though we scored four and won we need to be more clinical. Other than that, I thought we were excellent.
