FRIDAY 17th NOVEMBER 2023 - WORLD CUP QUALIFYING - SOUTH AMERICA
Colombia 2 (Luis Diaz 2 goals) Brazil 1 (Martinelli)

The Liverpool forward scored twice in five second-half minutes to complete a surprise Colombia comeback in the 2026 Word Cup qualifier in Barranquilla. He was reunited with his father, Luis Manuel Diaz, on Tuesday after rebels had held him hostage for 12 days. Diaz was surrounded by team-mates and staff following his first goal. ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/11/17/009c64b8-ed8b-4a8d-9a0e-c2ac6450e274.jpgThe 26-year-old pointed to the crowd after his 75th-minute equaliser and television cameras showed his teary-eyed father, wearing a Colombia shirt, celebrating with his arms raised. Diaz said he had experienced "hard moments" over recent weeks but added: "Life makes you strong and brave and I think that's football, and not just football but life. "I'm grateful to my team-mates, to the coaching staff who were always there for me at every moment," he said. "And I dedicate the victory to the people, who deserved it." ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/17D94/production/_131748679_gettyimages-1797756133.jpgLuis Diaz was surrounded by Colombia team-mates and staff following his equaliserArsenal forward Gabriel Martinelli had given favourites Brazil a fourth-minute lead before they lost Real Madrid's Vinicius Jr to injury later in the first half. But Diaz's quick-fire double secured an important win which lifted hosts Colombia above their opponents and up to third in the South American standings. It came just two days after he was reunited with his father, who was freed by Colombia's National Liberation Army (ELN) guerrilla group after being kidnapped in his home town of Barrancas on 28 October. Diaz's mother, Cilenis Marulanda, was also taken but was rescued a few hours later, and a massive search operation was launched for her 58-year-old husband. ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/22B4/production/_131748880_gettyimages-1797792517-1.jpg Luis Diaz directed his celebrations into the crowd, where his father was watching

Liverpool fly Luis Diaz's parents to city for Christmas after kidnapping ordeal..By Mandeep Sanghera, BBC Sport.i2-prod.mirror.co.uk/incoming/article31437086.ece/ALTERNATES/s615b/1_Screenshot-2023-11-14-at-144052.jpgLiverpool have flown the parents and wider family of Luis Diaz to the city so they can spend Christmas together. It follows the release of the Colombia forward's father, Luis Manuel Diaz, by kidnappers who had held him hostage for 12 days. The 26-year-old's mother, Cilenis Marulanda, was also taken but was rescued a few hours later. Diaz was reunited with his father earlier this week when he returned home to play for his country. In an emotional game, Diaz scored twice in a win against Brazil in a 2026 World Cup qualifier in Barranquilla as his father watched from the stands. In providing support for Diaz, Liverpool chartered a plane for Diaz and his wider family on Friday to bring them to Merseyside and help the family following their traumatic experience. The winger will join up with them when he returns from international duty, with Colombia away to Paraguay on Tuesday. Diaz missed two Liverpool games while his father was being held by Colombia's National Liberation Army (ELN) guerrilla group after being abducted on 28 October. The winger then came off the bench to score an equaliser during added time in a 1-1 Premier League draw at Luton on 5 November. After his goal, he pulled up his Liverpool shirt to show a T-shirt underneath bearing the message "freedom for papa" prior to his father's release.

Here are some of your comments:
Paul: Not very sure about Endo after Hendo. I think we need to start looking ahead and look at another centre-back and a longer-term fix for an aggressive holding midfielder to complete the spine of the team. Rae: It has been already said repeatedly, but so important worth saying again. If Liverpool had signed a world class holding midfielder it could be the difference between top four and Premier League champions. Look at how important Rodri is for City. He protects the defence, links up the midfield and scores important goals. Gary: I wish we'd bought another defender, preferably a versatile world class one but I'd settle for a steady one. We are weak defensively and any addition would have increased our options and our strength. Mike: Other than Salah, the biggest threat we have is Nunez and I find it so frustrating that he is not always first choice yet we are critical of him when he misses easy chances. As an ex-professional defender the one thing that frightens opponents is his pace! He should be first choice centre-forward and allowed to hone his game for 90 minutes.

Liverpool plan partial opening of new Anfield Road stand upper tier for Manchester United game in December..By Mandeep Sanghera, BBC Sport.
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/150CC/production/_131802268_gettyimages-1610635367.jpg Liverpool are redeveloping the Anfield Road Stand, which was last revamped in 1998Liverpool plan to partially open the upper tier of their new Anfield Road stand when they face Manchester United on 17th December. The club is conducting an £80m upgrade to lift capacity by 7,000 to 61,000. Its opening was delayed until 2024 after Liverpool changed contractors to Rayner Rowen Group following Buckingham Group's fall into administration. The Reds believe about half of the upper tier will be open for the United fixture, pending safety approval. That would also be the case for games against West Ham, Arsenal and Newcastle United later in December. "The upper tier of the new stand will be partially open for the upcoming fixture against Manchester United on 17 December, with several thousand general admission seats expected to be available to supporters," reads a Liverpool statement. "This is subject to an internal emergency conditions test managed in conjunction with Liverpool City Council and a public test event, which is expected to take place during week commencing 11th December. "This latest development is earlier than previously expected, following Buckingham Group entering administration in September, and is testimony to the commitment and hard work of everybody connected with this complex and ambitious build project. "There is still more work to be completed before the stand can be fully operational and able to welcome 61,000 fans to Anfield on a matchday." The work had initially been scheduled for completion before the start of the 2023-24 season. But only the lower tier of the stand has been open by supporters so far this season, with the ground's capacity reduced to 50,000.

Man City v Liverpool: Pick of the statsLiverpool have won just one of their past 14 Premier League away games against Manchester City (D5 L8) - and that was a 4-1 victory in Jurgen Klopp's first visit to Etihad Stadium in November 2015. Erling Haaland has scored 49 goals in 47 Premier League matches for City. A goal on Saturday would mean smashing the record for fastest to 50 (held by Andrew Cole - 65 games). However, Liverpool are one of two teams he has faced and not yet scored against in the competition (along with Brentford). The Reds have lost only one of their past 23 league games (W15 D7) - although they are winless in their past three and on a run of seven matches on the road without a clean sheet. Pep Guardiola's City have won their past 23 home games and victory on Saturday would equal that record for an English top-flight club, currently held by Sunderland between December 1890 and April 1892. Guardiola and Klopp have faced each other more than they’ve faced any other manager (28). Klopp’s 11 wins is the most by any manager against Guardiola, while Guardiola’s 10 victories is the most by any manager against Klopp. ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/a6dc/live/07b11dc0-8a0d-11ee-98b1-db784797c907.jpgLiverpool defender Virgil van Dijk says he is back to his best as the Reds prepare to face Manchester City in a top-of-the-table match on Saturday. Last season Van Dijk faced criticism for his performances but says he now feels “important” again. "Last year saw ups and downs, good games and less good games," said the 32-year-old. "I'm held to a very high standard and I still am. That's what I've created and I enjoy that. If that's not the case, then something's not right. "But I feel like I am in good moment physically and mentally and I feel like I am important. I just feel very good and I want to keep going. "For me the most important thing is how I feel, what my team-mates feel about me and especially the manager. All the noise from the outside, whether it is very good or very bad, you can't do anything with it.” Van Dijk is now firmly looking towards the future with City his next focus. "The only thing I can influence is how I play and last year I know I wasn't at my best," he added.

Fernando Torres - the best to burst onto the Premier League scene ?
ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/5943/live/e11f3e80-89f8-11ee-a896-adfc7214b902.jpg
Gary Lineker, Micah Richards and Alan Shearer have been ranking their best players to have burst onto the Premier League scene on the Match of the Day: Top 10 podcast.Fernando Torres scored 24 goals in his maiden season for Liverpool and former Manchester City defender Micah Richards recalled playing against the Spanish forward, who he described as "an unbelievable player". "He was one of the hardest I played against. When I played centre-half against Torres, when he was at Liverpool, his movement and pace and the timing of his runs were great as well," said Richards. "Just when you think you've got him, he just used to pull to the back of me so I could just see him out of my eye. He was amazing. When he went to Chelsea, I couldn't believe it, it was like Space Jam where they suck all the powers out. I couldn't believe it." Former Newcastle United and England striker Alan Shearer added: "Well the rumour was that his knee was knackered. They still did the deal but he was nowhere near the player he was when he was at Liverpool."

Second-placed Liverpool host leaders Man City on saturday at 12.30pm..
In the latest episode of BBC Radio Merseyside's The Red Kop podcast, the team discuss which front three should start Saturday's game against Manchester City:Carl Woodward: "Diaz has just scored two goals for Colombia against Brazil so he’s going to be quite confident. Salah scored four goals last week for Egypt. Nunez is still doing things as well. They are feeling very confident. I do like Jota, but at least if you put him on the bench you can bring him off. He’s always liable to score and does do well against Manchester City and has scored against them in the past. It is hard to pick. "Diaz is the perfect one to go down that left-hand side against Kyle Walker. I don’t think Jota is going to get much out of Walker, but Diaz can. "They can be got at. We saw Chelsea score four goals against them. I know it was at Stamford Bridge, but they can be got at this season. The defence isn’t as watertight as it normally is and they don’t like players running at them. Our players are perfect for that." Paul Salt added: "They’re not going to fancy facing our front three. "It's a great option to have Jota on the bench, but if you didn’t play Nunez he’d be a great option. If you see him - that giant of a man on the touchline - you are thinking: 'He’s still got to come on and he’s going to run us ragged.' "You know what Klopp is like after internationals. He doesn’t half tinker. He doesn't like players who have been in South America starting." ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/2a48/live/afad80a0-87c3-11ee-97a3-a9953bf0fef7.jpg

Liverpool defender Konstantinos Tsimikas says Saturday's fixture against Manchester City is a match between "two of the best teams in the world". Just one point separates Liverpool from league leaders Manchester City after 12 games. The trip to Etihad Stadium could be vital in deciding the Reds' fate come the end of the season. "In home games, they are very, very strong," Tsimikas said of City. "But we are Liverpool. We will go there to play our football, to give absolutely everything and to win the game. "Anything can happen in this game. I think it's two of the best teams in the world right now. I think the only thing we have to see it like is as a final, to play our football. "Everybody knows in this club we play [against] a very, very tough team. They are always there – they win the Premier League, Champions League last year, they make the Treble last year. I think it will be a very tough one. "I think everybody is looking forward to this fixture – from the players and the fans. I think it will be a very tough game for everybody. "I think it's very important to build the momentum again and start winning football games. I think we are in a good shape. We have to play our football, to give everything and after we will see what the result will be."

Trent Alexander-Arnold could face disciplinary action after breaking Premier League rules..Report by Dan Marsh Trent Alexander-Arnold could be in hot water with the Football Association after admitting he deliberately celebrated his goal against Manchester City at the weekend in front of irate home supporters. i2-prod.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/news/article31526929.ece/ALTERNATES/s615b/0_GettyImages-1813246370.jpgThe Liverpool vice-captain, 25, was on target in the 80th minute to cancel out Erling Haaland's 50th Premier League goal for the champions and earn the Reds a share of the spoils at the Etihad Stadium. He celebrated the strike by putting a finger to his lips in front of the home supporters before jogging back to restart the game. Speaking post-match, Alexander-Arnold admitted that he enjoyed the reaction from the City fans, who would later lash out at him on social media. He said: “It’s always good to celebrate in front of away fans. Seeing all of the faces is really funny.” While players are usually booked for goading opposition fans, referee Chris Kavanagh took no action against Alexander-Arnold on the day and, as such, may make no mention of it in his post-match report. However, it would still be possible for the FA to intervene. i2-prod.mirror.co.uk/incoming/article31535555.ece/ALTERNATES/s810/0_Screenshot-2023-11-27-at-090410.jpgThe IFAB's Law 12 states that a player “must be cautioned” for “gesturing or acting in a provocative, derisory or inflammatory way”. While the FA could choose to act after Alexander-Arnold escaped a booking for his mischievous celebration, it's likely he would only be warned about his future conduct. Alexander-Arnold was the Liverpool hero with his dramatic late intervention but he endured a difficult afternoon against Jeremy Doku, who was at his dazzling best for Manchester City. The champions also restricted Alexander-Arnold from driving forward into midfield, too. ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/5e33/live/ec58abc0-8cfe-11ee-b0df-59a0967c1ec1.jpg

ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/b60f/live/69558bb0-83b4-11ee-913e-f1ed4de8fadb.jpgWe asked for your thoughts on Saturday's match between Manchester City and Liverpool.
Here are some of your comments:
Liverpool fansYusuf: We gave it a right go. First half was a bit hectic - of course the goal from Haaland but also numerous miscues from Alisson. Second half, we managed to reply very well and all paid dividends with Trent scoring a great goal. Alisson luckily was let off - could have easily been four or five for City. And Gravenberch needs to become a regular starter. Ricky: Whatever happened to heavy metal football? Liverpool functional in defence and one dimensional in attack. Would we have taken a draw five years ago? No. Daniel: First-half we looked too comfortable. Constantly playing from the back against the dangerous high-line attack City had. Second-half was better, but we need to stop playing from the back because that’s where our errors lie. Trent’s goal was brilliant and thorough, but defensively we need to sharpen up. I hope Alisson and Jota are OK. James: Good result for LFC and all the chasing pack. LFC must be considered title contenders now and the Premier League is much more open this year. Exciting times ahead.

Liverpool: Alisson and Diogo Jota set for spell on sidelines through injury..

Both players were injured during Liverpool's 1-1 draw at Manchester City on Saturday. Manager Jurgen Klopp says Alisson's injury is not as bad as first feared but he is still set to be out for about two weeks, while no timescale has yet been put on Jota's recovery. i2-prod.mirror.co.uk/incoming/article31535163.ece/ALTERNATES/s615b/0_GettyImages-1813247988.jpg"Both are out," said Klopp. "With Ali it's a bit lesser, so we have to see." Portugal international Jota was forced off after 54 minutes at the Etihad Stadium, while Alisson completed the game despite sustaining hamstring injury late on. Asked about Alisson's injury not being as bad as first feared, Klopp added: "No, but bad enough. Bad enough. "He will not play tomorrow [Thursday], not on Sunday, probably not the week after. Then it should be kind of OK. "Diogo will take a little bit longer, we don't know exactly how long, but it's a bit more severe. We have to see." The Reds host Austrian side LASK in the Europa League on Thursday before another home game against Fulham in the Premier League on Sunday. They then have trips to Sheffield United and Crystal Palace in the league and Union St Gilloise in the Europa League over the next fortnight before welcoming Manchester United to Anfield on 17 December.

SUNDAY 3rd DECEMBER 2023 - PREMIER LEAGUE
Liverpool 4 Fulham 3
Report By Joe Rindl, BBC Sport.ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/12/4/f42f2d80-7d89-4a71-a434-d2710d9cff73.jpgTrent Alexander-Arnold scored an 88th-minute winner as Liverpool mounted a stunning late comeback to beat Fulham in a seven-goal thriller at Anfield. Trailing 3-2 in the 87th minute, Liverpool equalised as Wataru Endo scored his first Premier League goal and seconds later Alexander-Arnold completed the turnaround. Alexander-Arnold had helped Liverpool open the scoring in the 20th minute when his free-kick ricocheted off the crossbar and in off Fulham keeper Bernd Leno. Former Red Harry Wilson equalised four minutes later before Alexis Mac Allister restored Liverpool's lead after 38 minutes with a stunning long-range strike. Kenny Tete netted Fulham's second equaliser in first-half injury time and Bobby De Cordova-Reid headed the Cottagers into the lead in the 80th minute. Fulham had looked set to end Liverpool's 13-month unbeaten home record in the Premier League. Instead, the Reds kept up their perfect record at Anfield this season and cut Arsenal's lead at the top to two points. Marco Silva's side stayed 14th.

Joel Matip: Liverpool defender suffers ACL injury, confirms Reds boss Jurgen Klopp..

Centre-back Matip came off 20 minutes from the end of Sunday's 4-3 Premier League victory over Fulham at Anfield. After Wednesday's 2-0 win at Sheffield United, Klopp said the 32-year-old Cameroon defender had ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). The defender is in the final year of his contract with the club. Matip joined Liverpool from German side Schalke seven years ago and has made 201 appearances in all competitions, scoring 11 goals. "It's what I unfortunately expected from the first second," said Klopp. "Everything looked like that. It's very unfortunate."

SATURDAY 9th DECEMBER 2023 - PREMIER LEAGUE
Crystal Palace 1 (Mateta 57 pen, Ayew 75 sent off) Liverpool 2 (Salah 76, Elliott 90+1)
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/C338/production/_131967994_gettyimages-1842575107.jpg Mohamed Salah scored his 150th Premier League goal - only four players in the competition have reached that total in fewer matches than the Egyptian (247)Mohamed Salah scored his 200th Liverpool goal as Jurgen Klopp's side produced a late comeback against 10-man Crystal Palace to move top of the Premier League and increase the pressure on former boss Roy Hodgson. Salah became only the fifth player to reach that landmark for the club, joining Ian Rush, Roger Hunt, Gordon Hodgson and Billy Liddell, when he ignited the fightback with a 76th-minute equaliser. It was Harvey Elliott who delivered the decisive moment inside the first of 10 minutes of added time, producing a stunning strike from the edge of the penalty area to lift Liverpool above Arsenal. Salah's goal arrived just 98 seconds after Jordan Ayew was dismissed for a second bookable offence, and the visitors had failed to land a shot on target prior to that moment. Palace, booed off by their supporters following a disappointing home loss to Bournemouth on Wednesday, were on course to deliver a surprise blow to the Reds' title aspirations following Jean-Philippe Mateta's penalty. The game had continued for more than one minute after Jarell Quansah caught Mateta when attempting to clear a cross before the video assistant referee intervened - but referee Andy Madley did not take long to award Palace a spot-kick after being sent to the pitchside monitor. Palace had seen a penalty decision in their favour overturned during the first half when Madley took three minutes to review a challenge by Will Hughes on Endo in the lead-up to Virgil van Dijk's foul on Odsonne Edouard inside the box. ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/240/cpsprodpb/7518/production/_131967992_gettyimages-1842575058.jpgLiverpool, though dominant, struggled throughout to break the hosts down and the returning Alisson came to his side's rescue in stunning fashion in the first half when he pushed Jefferson Lerma's first-time shot on to the post. The visitors again had the Brazilian to thank for another excellent stop to prevent Joachim Andersen providing a dramatic twist with a header from a free-kick in the 100th minute. Having eventually ended Palace's spirited resistance, victory took the Reds one point above last season's runners-up Arsenal, who travel to third-placed Aston Villa later on Saturday (17:30 GMT). "I told the boys that's the first game I've seen somebody play as bad as we did for 76 minutes and still win," Klopp told TNT Sports. "In this period of the year we have to get through, we need results. Nobody is in for the Oscar award for best football game ever, it's about three points. We got them and we are more than happy."

Alexis Mac Allister: Jurgen Klopp says Liverpool star's injury 'doesn't look good'..By Mandeep Sanghera, BBC Sport.

He carried on playing but was substituted after 57 minutes and later had his wound stitched up. "Macca doesn't look good, so we have to see day by day," said Klopp ahead of Saturday's trip to Crystal Palace (12:30 GMT). "They were pretty hopeful after the game that it was not serious. It's not that serious, but in the period of the year if you are out for five days, it's 12 games pretty much." ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/240/cpsprodpb/41D7/production/_131955861_hi090180663.jpgKlopp added: "I don't expect him to be ready for [Saturday]. I don't know about Thursday or Sunday after that, so it's pretty much stop and go. We have to see." Liverpool are away to Belgian side Union Saint-Gilloise in the Europa League on Thursday and have already qualified for the knockout stages after securing top spot in their ongoing group. They then host Manchester United in the Premier League on Sunday, 17th December. Brazil keeper Alisson could return for the Reds at Palace after returning to training following a hamstring injury suffered against Manchester City on 25th November. "Looks good," said Klopp on Alisson. "I don't know if good enough for [Saturday], I have to check that." Liverpool defender Joel Matip has joined long-term absentees Andy Robertson, Thiago Alcantara and Stefan Bajcetic on the sidelines at the club. He could miss the rest of the season after rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and the 32-year-old's contract runs out next summer. Asked about Matip's future, Klopp said: "I'm pretty sure the club will show their class. He deserves all the support from us and he will get it." On a new contract for Matip: "I would say so, but it's not my decision." In terms of bringing in a replacement for Matip in the January transfer window, Klopp added: "As long as other clubs don't put them under the Christmas tree for us and say, 'Take it as long as you need it', I don't think so to be honest."

ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/c9db/live/0b66aa40-9456-11ee-91bf-230bfab3fcba.jpgWe asked for your thoughts on Saturday's match between Crystal Palace and Liverpool.
Here are some of your comments:
Liverpool fans
Brian: It's fantastic that the team keep showing the spirit to grind out wins. If we can kick into top gear soon, things looks very good. If not then the slow starts will start to catch them out. Having said that, it's always better to finish strong and some previous Jurgen Klopp teams have started games like sprinters and had to hang on at the finish. Leighton: We did not know how to break down Palace’s mixture of a low block and man-marking. We were unable to keep the ball in midfield and create chances and only gave them to Palace. Only after Palace began to tire and our subs were included did we look like we knew how to play. Well done the subs, especially Harvey Elliott. Muaz: A bit poor for the first 75 minutes though we did dominate. Credit to Allison with the save and to Mohamed Salah and super sub Elliott. Guess that substitution for Darwin Nunez was worth the risk. We could not have people missing clear chances again could we, like at Kenilworth Road! Altogether though, great performance. Stuart: Who books Roy Hodgson? The officials lost control of the game. Thankfully the subs Joe Gomez, Elliott, Cody Gakpo and Curtis Jones breathed life into a very flat performance. Alisson continues to perform miracles between the sticks.

Michael Owen's "wound will never go" after Liverpool fans placed "dagger in the heart"..by Mark Jones.

"Where we you, where were you, where were you in Istanbul?"
The chanting was relentless, as arms were outstretched and fingers pointed toward the Anfield turf. It was Boxing Day 2005, but the mood wasn't very festive. Liverpool, in fine form, were seeing off Newcastle United 2-0 thanks to first half goals from Steven Gerrard and Peter Crouch, but with the game all but secured by the break a sideshow took over in the second period. When Michael Owen, back at Anfield for the first time since leaving Liverpool some 18 months previously, looked up towards the Kop he could see an array of tin foil and cardboard European Cups, each one there to remind him of what he'd just missed out on. Then as the game meandered to a conclusion another cutting chant came out. "You should have signed for a big club." If only they knew. The details of Owen's 2005 move to Newcastle, and not back to Liverpool, have been pored over many times before. Owen himself isn't shy about admitting that he had been desperate to return to Anfield back then, just a year after leaving for Real Madrid. Just as he thought it could be happening, in came the Magpies with an offer Real couldn't refuse and Liverpool couldn't match. A rather curious relationship between the forward and his former fans took hold, but while Owen was at Newcastle and struggling with injuries things could always be kept at a distance. Until they couldn't any more. Again, Owen is on record in several places talking about his 2009 decision to join Manchester United on a free transfer. Approaching 30 and with injuries catching up with him it was, he says, down to a straight choice between Sir Alex Ferguson's reigning champions, Everton or relegation-threatened Hull City. No amount of attempts to get back to Liverpool, often through his good friend Jamie Carragher, were going to work. Rafael Benitez's Reds had just finished second to United, and although the attempt to crowbar Robbie Keane into the team hadn't worked, in attacking roles they had Fernando Torres, Dirk Kuyt and Ryan Babel, as well as a huge amount of faith in David Ngog. Gerrard was often played as a No.10. “If you’re going to say no to Manchester United, you might as well just retire," Owen told Off The Ball back in 2018. “I did all I could and I can’t do any more. Circumstances just meant that I couldn’t ever go back [to Liverpool]." But he could go back. In a Manchester United shirt. It was October 2009 and Liverpool were in the midst of an horrendous run, losing their previous four matches - a sorry tale that included fatal back-to-back Champions League defeats to Fiorentina and Lyon and a beach ball scoring a goal at Sunderland. United, imperious and champions, arrived at Anfield on top of the league after seven wins from nine games, a run which had included Owen's unforgettable late winner in his first Manchester derby. He had known what was coming though. "Now that I'm playing for their local rivals – I'm not holding my breath, put it that way," he had told The Guardian. "I've got to earn a living, provide for my family. I supported Everton as a kid. I never supported Real Madrid, but I played for them. It's a job opportunity, just like anyone else's work." Owen's opportunity would arrive as a 74th minute substitute for Dimitar Berbatov, as Ferguson turned to his bench in a bid to get back into the game nine minutes after Torres had outwitted Rio Ferdinand to take the roof off the Kop end. The former Liverpool forward was in the action quickly, as a burst into the Anfield Road end penalty area - which United fans had briefly strewn with balloons and beach balls after what had happened in the north east a week previously - was halted as he was hauled back by his mate Carragher. Penalty? Perhaps it could have been, but no. Owen and Wayne Rooney pleaded with referee Andre Marriner, but the howls of derision from the home fans was all they got in return. That and Carragher angrily gesturing towards a friend he'd shared so many dressing rooms with, but who was now an enemy. In a frantic finale there were red cards for first Nemanja Vidic and then Javier Mascherano, but Lucas Leiva released the 20-year-old Ngog to calmly roll home the second goal in stoppage time, with Pepe Reina sprinting the length of the pitch to celebrate with him. Briefly the focus had turned away from Owen, although that was no consolation. "When I go back to Anfield and one or two people booed me, it was like a dagger in my heart for what I did for the club and how I felt about it. And how I still feel," Owen told that Off The Ball interview in 2018, seriously understating the feeling that day. Speaking to Carragher on his old teammate's Greatest Game podcast last year he says the wounds are still there. “It has been painful going back to Anfield. Crying in the players' lounge and hoping nobody sees. It has been torture for a long time," he said. “It is like splitting up with your wife. I can only blame myself, I said yes to Real Madrid. I still love Liverpool. Different to [Carragher], you are still at that club being idolised. I was you. And yet there is a polarised opinion because of me thinking I will go away for a year and all of a sudden it is all ruined. “If I am walking along the Kop, they’re saying ‘you Manc’ or whatever and I have got to live with that. It has killed me for ages and the wound will never go.” In this rivalry, every decision can have lasting consequences. i2-prod.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/incoming/article22503915.ece/ALTERNATES/s810/0_Michael-Owen.jpg
