Luis Diaz: Major military and police search under way for Liverpool player's father..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/10A1E/production/_131562186_0dea59504ce3cca43d7ff872d652535eeb016c30.jpg Liverpool players showed their support for team-mate Diaz in their win against Nottingham Forest at AnfieldA major military and police search is under way in Colombia for the father of Liverpool player Luis Diaz, with the authorities offering a £40,000 reward for information leading to his rescue. More than 120 soldiers, plus police, searched northern Colombia for Luis Manuel Diaz on Sunday, with reports armed men had taken him and his wife. The player's mother, Cilenis Marulanda, was found in Barrancas on Saturday. Diaz was absent from the Liverpool side which beat Nottingham Forest on Sunday. ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/1216F/production/_131559047_diaz_gettytwo.jpgIn a statement, the army said it had set up roadblocks and deployed two motorised platoons, unmanned aircraft, helicopters and a plane with radar in the search for his father. The Colombian authorities have not provided details about the reported kidnapping, but local media said Diaz's mother and father were taken by armed men on motorcycles at a gas station in Barrancas, their home town, which is in La Guajira, the country's northern region . Colombia President Gustavo Petro said "all the public forces have been deployed" to find Diaz's father. Speaking on Sunday, the director of the National Police, General William Rene Salamanca, announced a reward of "up to 200m pesos" (about £40,000) for information. Attorney General Francisco Barbosa said he had contacted Diaz twice to provide the 26-year-old with updates on the investigation. Barbosa told the player that information has been obtained regarding the possibility that his father could be in Venezuela - a situation which, Barbosa said, would require intervention by President Petro. Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp dedicated Sunday's 3-0 Premier League victory over Nottingham Forest to Diaz, saying they had won "for our brother". Surrounded by his team-mates, Diogo Jota held up the Colombia player's number seven shirt after scoring Liverpool's first goal. The club said before Sunday's game that they were "aware of an ongoing situation" involving the family of Diaz, adding the player's welfare "will continue to be our immediate priority".

"It's all about him, that he makes himself available or not, and I don't want to force anything." "We will not force the Luis [Diaz] situation. It's out of our hands, we are just waiting for good news. "He was in training two days ago, yesterday he did a session, and he will be part of the team. "If he feels right, he will train with us. When he's with the boys he's fine but you can tell he hasn't slept a lot. We will wait to see how he is and go from there. "The news - I didn't personally get from Colombia, I always get it forwarded - but everything that gives us a bit of hope is good. We are waiting for really good news." ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/11/3/9bba274c-650a-491b-b8ac-08b37837bbc4.jpgichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/11/3/46d2a310-96d1-4798-87a5-bad0d55524e6.jpgLiverpool forward's father 'kidnapped by rebels' - By Vanessa Buschschlüter..BBC News Online Latin America editorThe Colombian government says that the father of Liverpool footballer Luis Diaz was kidnapped by left-wing rebels of the National Liberation Army (ELN). Luis Manuel Diaz was seized at gunpoint along with his wife on Saturday. The player's mother was left behind in a car by the kidnappers as police closed in, but the gunmen dragged away his father. Hundreds of police and soldiers have been deployed to free him. Police had originally said that a criminal gang was most likely to blame. But on Thursday, a government delegation which is currently engaged in peace talks with the rebel group, said that it had "official knowledge" that the kidnapping had been carried out by "a unit belonging to the ELN". A representative of the group has reportedly said the group will free Díaz's father in the coming days.

"My mother, my brothers and I are desperate, anxious and have no words to describe what we are feeling. This suffering will only end when we have him home with us. "I beg that they free him immediately, respecting his integrity and ending this painful wait. In the name of love and compassion we ask they reconsider their actions and allow us to have him back." The information he gets are rather positive but it is not done - the one information we didn't get yet. "He decided he wants to be around us again because he needs that distraction because he can't do anything. The only lift you can get in this moment is the real news." ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/976/cpsprodpb/CA8C/production/_131625815_mail_monday.jpgichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/976/cpsprodpb/118AC/production/_131625817_mirror_monday.jpgichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/976/cpsprodpb/64FC/production/_131625852_i_monday.jpg

Here are some of your comments:
Liverpool fans
Daniel: One of the worst performances I’ve seen this season. We were completely lacklustre and underestimated a very well executed Luton side. Anybody who goes back to watch it would believe Luton were the better side in this game, and they were. Luis Diaz, you absolute hero! Josh: This is the difference between us and Manchester City over the past few years. Erling Haaland and co would have put four or five past Luton. We just aren't clinical enough in and around the box. Darwin Nunez has so much potential but he needs to improve his first touch and his finishing. Trent Alexander-Arnold needs to decide if he's a midfielder or a right-back because currently he's being found missing. Glen: Lacklustre performance and gave away the ball countless times. No width and squandered two good opportunities to score. Fair play to Luton, who deserved their point, for sure. Matt: That was dreadful. To go from last weekend's competent, professional performance [in the win over Nottingham Forest] to Sunday's sloppy, wasteful display is both baffling and frustrating. Somebody really needs to point out to Nunez that he's paid to put the round thing between the two vertical sticks and below the horizontal one. The miss was abysmal. Not good enough. At all.

Thiago Alcantara is a target for Serie A clubs Juventus and Inter Milan, with the 32-year-old midfielder's Anfield contract expiring at the end of the season. Liverpool and Chelsea are interested in signing Real Betis' Spain Under-19 winger winger Assane Diao. Liverpool, Arsenal and Fulham sent representatives to watch Fluminense's Andre during the Copa Libertadores final. The 22-year-old Brazil midfielder has an agreement to leave the South American champions, who value him at 35m (£30.4m) euros, in January.

GOOD NEWS: Footballer Luis Díaz's father freed by Colombian guerrillas..By Robert Plummer, BBC News.
i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2023/11/09/16/77612675-12708291-image-a-64_1699547381429.jpg This is the first image of Luis Manuel Diaz (centre), the father of Liverpool's Luis Diaz, after he was rescued following his kidnapping back on October 28thColombian-born Liverpool footballer Luis Díaz's father has been released by the left-wing guerrillas who kidnapped him 13 days ago, police sources and local media say. Luis Manuel Díaz was handed over to United Nations and Catholic church officials by members of the National Liberation Army (ELN). He was abducted on 28th October in the family's hometown, Barrancas. The footballer's mother was also seized, but was freed within hours. Local media said Mr Díaz had travelled by military helicopter to the city of Valledupar, where he would undergo a medical examination before being returned to his family. They also quoted authorities as saying that he was in a good state of health, with no signs of mistreatment. According to El Tiempo newspaper, there were tearful scenes in the neighbourhood where the couple lived, with family members taking to their cars to drive through the streets in celebration. Most of them were dressed in Liverpool team shirts bearing the number 23 and Luis Díaz's name. Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp told TNT Sports that the footballer was "really happy". "We are delighted by the news of [Luis Díaz's] father's safe return and we thank all those involved in securing his release," the club said on Twitter. Luis Alfonso Díaz, a cousin of the footballer's father, told Caracol Radio that it was "emotional" to learn that he had been freed "after so many days of sadness". "We feel a great satisfaction, we are glad that it's come to an end," he added. President Gustavo Petro reacted on X, formerly Twitter, with the message: "Long live Freedom and Peace." The Colombian Football Federation issued a statement thanking all those responsible for Luis Manuel Díaz's release, including the government, the military and the police. It added: "Football is passion in peace. Let no-one ever think of attacking that reality again." i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2023/11/03/18/77354903-12708291-Reports_in_Colombia_have_suggested_that_Luis_Diaz_s_left_father_-a-1_1699037448222.jpgLuis Diaz's father Luis Manuel had been missing since he was abducted last monthOn the day of the kidnap attack, the couple was accosted by the gunmen as they had stopped at a petrol station in Barrancas, in the northern province of La Guajira. The kidnappers later abandoned Luis Díaz's mother, Cilenis Marulanda, in a car as police closed in, but dragged away his father. Police originally said that a criminal gang was most likely to blame. But a government delegation - which is currently engaged in peace talks with the rebel group - later said that it had "official knowledge" that the kidnapping had been carried out by "a unit belonging to the ELN". The ELN is Colombia's main remaining active guerrilla group. It has been fighting the state since 1964 and has an estimated 2,500 members. It is most active in the border region with Venezuela, where Luis Manuel Díaz and his wife live. The kidnapping caused outrage in Colombia, where Luis Díaz - who is part of Colombia's national team - is immensely popular. His Liverpool team has also shown its unwavering support. Díaz scored a goal against Luton Town on Sunday, lifting his shirt to reveal the words in Spanish "freedom for papa". "Every second, every minute our anxiety grows," Díaz, 26, said in a statement released shortly after the match in England's Premier League. i2-prod.dailystar.co.uk/incoming/article31378660.ece/ALTERNATES/s615b/0_Luton-Town-v-Liverpool-FC-Premier-League.jpg

Toulouse 3-2 Liverpool: Key stats: Possession 29% - 71% - Shots: 11-19 - On Target: 5-4 - Referee: Georgi Kabakov
Liverpool have suffered only their second defeat in their past 28 matches in all competitions (W19 D7), with the other defeat coming against Tottenham Hotspur in September. Tonight was the first time they have conceded three times in a match this season.
Toulouse's Thijs Dallinga became the first player to score home and away against Liverpool in a major European season while playing for a French club since Didier Drogba in the 2003-04 Uefa Cup for Marseille.
Since keeping three consecutive clean sheets in May, Liverpool have kept just four clean sheets in their past 19 games in all competitions. Away from home, the Reds have gone 10 consecutive games without a clean sheet for the first time since August 2016.
Toulouse's Aron Dønnum has been involved in two goals in the UEFA Europa League this season, with both coming against Liverpool (goal tonight, assist at Anfield). He is only the fourth Norwegian to score against Liverpool in major European competition, after Dan Eggen (1995, Brondby), Geir Hasund (1997, Brann) and Erling Haaland (2019, FC Red Bull Salzburg).
Diogo Jota scored in and lost a match for Liverpool for the first time ever, having won 32 and drawn six of the other 38 games he's scored in for the club. Indeed, in all club competitions including his time at Wolves, Jota was unbeaten in 60 games when he'd scored before tonight, since scoring in a 4-1 defeat for Wolves against Aston Villa in 2018.
Tonight was Jurgen Klopp's 450th match in charge of Liverpool, becoming the fourth manager to reach that mark along with Tom Watson in 1908, Bill Shankly in 1968 and Bob Paisley in 1982. All three other managers to reach that mark won their 450th game.
Liverpool benefitted from an own goal – scored by Toulouse's Cristian Casseres – in a major European match for a 12th different time but tonight was the first time they had lost when doing so (W11).

Toulouse 3-2 Liverpool: Jurgen Klopp angered by 'chaotic' performance - and media conference..By Emma Smith, BBC Sport.
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/9A84/production/_131665593_gettyimages-1784327396.jpg Kostas Tsimikas was caught in possession by Aron Donnum, who went on to score the opener for ToulouseAttempting to conduct his post-match interview in a media tent outside Stadium de Toulouse, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp was annoyed by the noise of the home fans. "We were as organised as this press conference - pretty chaotic," said a visibly angry Klopp, as Toulouse supporters chanted and banged on the tent. The bedlam left Klopp struggling to hear questions or translations from the interpreter, after Uefa allowed the media conference to take place outside the ground. It provided a fitting coda to a deeply infuriating evening for Klopp, who had seen his Liverpool side stunned in Toulouse. Just two weeks after a thumping 5-1 win at Anfield over a side just one point above the Ligue 1 relegation play-off place, the Reds produced a subpar performance in a 3-2 defeat. While Liverpool were left aggrieved by a late Jarell Quansah equaliser being disallowed for handball following a lengthy and confusing VAR check, Klopp said the primary reason for the loss was their own performance. "We were not aggressive enough," he said. "We gave balls easily away. Real mistakes. "With all the possession you have obviously you should create more but you cannot concede three goals here, that makes no sense. "They fought harder and it was deserved. Congratulations to Toulouse. "You can play as good as you want but if you don't win decisive battles you have no chance in football." ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/480/cpsprodpb/2554/production/_131665590_gettyimages-1784422287.jpgDespite making nine changes to the team which started the draw at Luton Town in the Premier League on Sunday, Liverpool's XI featured plenty of first-team strength - including Luis Diaz, starting his first match following the release of his father by kidnappers in Colombia. Liverpool's bench was particularly eye-catching. Mohamed Salah, Dominik Szoboszlai and Trent Alexander-Arnold all came on at half-time - but made little impact. Darwin Nunez was introduced when the visitors pulled the score back to 2-1, while Diogo Jota was thrown on with 10 minutes of normal time to play, and found the net to make it 3-2. Yet even a point would have flattered Liverpool, for whom the defeat could have been even worse had Thijs Dallinga not had two goals ruled out for a foul and offside respectively. Liverpool lacked flow and created few clear-cut chances until the frantic final minutes. ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/136C4/production/_131665597_gettyimages-1784420196.jpgJarell Quansah appeared to have snatched a 97th-minute equaliser for Liverpool - only for VAR to interveneThe peak of the chaos came seven minutes into stoppage time when Toulouse failed on multiple occasions to clear their lines, allowing young centre half Quansah to seemingly slam home his first senior goal. But several phases earlier in the move, the ball had ricocheted off Alexis Mac Allister's chest into his arm. Bulgarian referee Georgi Kabakov had already pointed to the centre circle, seemingly indicating 'check complete' - but then was called to the VAR screen, and subsequently disallowed the goal. "I only saw the video back now and for me it's not a handball - but how can I decide that?" said Klopp. Former Liverpool players were angered, including Steve McManaman on television co-commentary, while Sky pundit Jamie Carragher reposted his own comment on X from Wednesday night, describing VAR as a "disgrace".

Here are a selection of your comments:John: I'm beginning to wonder if some players turn up thinking a game against 'lesser' teams is a gimme. Let's hope this is a wake-up call to always be ruthless. Stu: Jurgen Klopp needs to stop rotating the squad for matches like this. It's different if we had qualified but we hadn't. Poor performance, we were left chasing the game - not good enough. Paul: We got what we deserved tonight, whether the VAR decision was wrong or right. The lack of decent squad depth is catching up with us, and some players need to be sold, including some of the new boys. Endo and Mac Allister very disappointing, and Trent Alexander-Arnold has regressed badly. Another trophy-less season coming up. James: I thought it couldn't get any worse than the Luton game, but Liverpool just didn't turn up again. Credit to the opposition. We can blame VAR but the game was already lost. We need to respect our opponents and not think we can roll over these so called smaller teams. There are no easy games in football. VT: Tonight was poor all round. Tsimikas and Matip are simply not good enough and Gakpo is not at the level required. Slow, predictive football with no cohesion whatsoever, but that happens with 10 changes each week. Didn't deserve the equaliser, but that doesn't defend poor officiating to re-referee games from three phases prior.

Salah wins player of the month award.. ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/89b2/live/cf51d450-7fc7-11ee-8ae7-df254a91308d.jpgLiverpool's Mohamed Salah has been named the Premier League player of the month for October. The forward scored five goals, including a double in the Merseyside derby win over Everton at Anfield. The Egypt international has started the season in fine form for the Reds, and his eight goals and four assists in the league so far have helped his side to third in the table after 11 games. It is the fifth time Salah has won the award.

Liverpool 3-0 Brentford: What Jurgen Klopp said:
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/13E34/production/_131706418_jurgenklopp.jpg
Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp speaking to BBC MOTD: "More than 20 years ago when I started my career, I wanted to create a team that nobody wants to play against and we faced that team today. "It's crazy! This spell where they had six corners in a row I thought 'oh god.' But we defended with so much passion in the moment. The goals we scored were fantastic. "Top goals, top performances. Darwin Nunez's work rate for example was second to none. The boys were there for second balls. It was a difficult game against a top opponent so I'm really happy with the performance and the result. "The squad is a really good squad. The kids who were on the bench today enjoyed it a lot. James McConnell came on and obviously he really enjoyed it too! A good day. "Wataru Endo's performance was top. He saved our lives in many moments and was super disciplined. So many good moments. The wind made life difficult and they pressed so there were tricky moments but he was really good. "Actually, [the Man City game is] not what I'm thinking about. These boys who played today need recovery, I hope they get that before games with their countries and hopefully they come back healthy then we can try [against Manchester City]. It's about reacting [to defeats] and the reaction today was great."

Here are some of your comments:
Liverpool fans
Muaz: It was a great game. Mohamed Salah and Diogo Jota were consistent as usual. We have amazing players and we are solid at Anfield. However, that tackle from Wataru Endo was stupid and unnecessary and in my opinion, a straight red. Excluding that, the whole game was a success. Now let’s see if we can bring that form with us to Etihad tadium. It will be hard but not impossible. Aarif: A professional performance with Salah clinical and big Virgil van Dijk at his imperious best. Endo's best performance by a mile and well-timed as his ability to break up play will be needed against City after the untimely international break. James: Van Dijk looks like he’s back to the levels he showed in 2019. After his injury, I never saw him playing at his best until this season. With Ibou Konate playing alongside him, I’m confident that we can make City work much harder for goals against us than they did last season. Fraser: That's more like it! We needed a performance like that after two lacklustre games. Attackers were on point, though Darwin Nunez was unlucky to be offside twice, but Salah and Jota delivered. Of course we still have issues but this should give us a much needed confidence boost for when we face City. We need to be ready for anything.

Footballer Luis Díaz reunited with father after kidnapping..By Vanessa Buschschlüter, BBC News.
i2-prod.mirror.co.uk/incoming/article31437086.ece/ALTERNATES/s615b/0_Screenshot-2023-11-14-at-144052.jpg Luis Diaz has been reunited with his fatherColombian football star Luis Díaz has been reunited with his father Luis Manuel Díaz who was released by rebels after holding him hostage for 12 days. The Liverpool striker and his father cried as they hugged each other for the first time after the kidnapping ordeal. Luis Manuel Díaz's abduction by the National Liberation Army (ELN) caused outrage in Colombia and abroad. The ELN said it had kidnapped the 58-year-old and his wife for ransom. The group quickly released his wife, Cilenis Marulanda, as police closed in but led the amateur football coach into the nearby mountains at gunpoint. The ELN leader described the abduction of the popular coach as a "mistake" but has insisted that kidnappings for ransom are not a breach of the ceasefire it signed earlier this year. The guerrilla group released Luis Manuel Díaz last Thursday to United Nations and Catholic Church officials. Later that day he was reunited with his wife and other family members, but it was not until now that he was able to embrace his footballer star son. Luis Díaz has flown to Colombia to train with the national team ahead of its World Cup qualifier against Brazil on Thursday evening in Colombia. The player missed two of Liverpool's matches while his father was being held by the rebels but came off the bench during the English Premier League game against Luton on 5 November. After scoring a goal in stoppage time, he pulled up his Liverpool shirt to show a T-shirt underneath bearing the message "freedom for papa". i2-prod.mirror.co.uk/incoming/article31330811.ece/ALTERNATES/s1200d/1_GettyImages-1702080594.jpg

The Liverpool forward slotted home in the 87th minute after Ronald Araujo had opened the scoring in the 2026 World Cup qualifier in Buenos Aires. World Cup winners Argentina had not lost since their 2-1 defeat by Saudi Arabia in their first match at the Qatar tournament last year. "We never felt comfortable," said Argentina captain Lionel Messi. "The loss is a good test for us. They are an intense team and it was difficult for us to play our game. "They have physical and fast players in the midfield. We didn't find a way to possess the ball for a long period of time." It was the first time Messi had failed to score for his country, when playing, since their World Cup group-stage win over Poland. Araujo's opener for Uruguay was the first goal Argentina have conceded since the World Cup final against France - a run of eight matches. Uruguay appointed former Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa as head coach in May and Messi said the Argentine's influence is already clear. "You can see Bielsa's hand on the way Uruguay is playing," Messi said. "In all the national teams or clubs, including Argentina, his style was very recognisable. And he has a good generation of players." Argentina, who had won all four of their opening qualifiers, remain top of the standings with 12 points from five matches while Uruguay are second with 10 points. ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/240/cpsprodpb/2188/production/_131748580_gettyimages-1797863619.jpg
