Bit like at Barnsley where we made them look much better than they are and were on the back foot after gifting them two early goals. We never got started in that game at all. My view is that the reason for our poor start to the season is very similar to last year. Too many changes, too much tinkering and not playing a settled side and to a consistent game plan. Some of this had been forced on Barton through injuries but we don’t help ourselves with ill discipline and Barton has to accept responsibility for at least some of this as some of this has at least been his choice and decision. Hope he lands on a more settled game plan soon as this is a tougher league and will be much harder to play catch up. Not seen anything yet to dissuade me from the view that he is not the tactical genius he thinks he is The ill-discipline isn't a reflection of an issue within the club, it is a reflection of the fact that Barton has signed players very much in his own image. Rossiter, Finley and Coutts are tough, tenacious grafters who come with a price - off-ball spats, short fuses and a deeply-rooted desire to inflict arbitrary violence on others. My issue is that these players aren't getting sent off for playing hard, they are getting sent off for stupidity (Kilgour or Thomas last night) or for acts of petulant malice (Coutts at Rochdale last season, Rossiter this season, Finley last night). I didn't really expect anything from Barnsley or Ipswich but was more disappointed and concerned by the nature of the defeats. Can you think of a single game that Barton has turned around through changes he has made? In the relegation season, I recall a pouting and demonstrative Joey throwing his dummy out on the sidelines, but precious little else. I don't think anyone has a problem with hard, but fair players (sadly lacking from the squad that Ben Garner put together). But as you say, it looks like the Club has signed players in the managers image. A bit nasty. A bit spiteful. Some supporters embrace that. Free country and all that. I predicted we would finish bottom of the Fair Play League - and ultimately that is going to cost Rovers in suspensions and points. From what I've read Rovers are not getting the rub of the green with officials. There might be a reason for that.

Epping, perhaps the reason for that is easy. Some of the simpletons who officiate lower league football, plainly think their preening "look at my new whistle" approach is innovative and edgy. These same cretins are no doubt led by the outdated and irrelevant perception they have of our manager. Just like you do.
The likes of Collina officiating and we'd be nowhere near the bottom of the pointless "fair play league".

The likes of Collina officiating and we'd be nowhere near the bottom of the pointless "fair play league". They’re not all chocolate teapots like Ross Joyce though - some of them are decent referees. Not sure from seeing some of the VAR decisions on TV that the standard above is massively better either. I doubt that they are influenced by their perception of Barton. Our approach as a team on the field is much more likely to be a factor though. If they see sly underhand stuff going on then that will undoubtedly leave an impression and ghey’ll be more likely to be looking for it. FWIW I think Barton is a complex character. There is good in him and he does have a level of intelligence. The stupid and unnecessary stuff that is part of the package makes it hard to see this though. This season will be the acid test of whether or not he is as good a manager as he thinks he is. Like last season early signs are not good but if he stops tinkering and sticks to a game plan he has got a chance of showing that as he has signed good players on the whole

It appears this was an effort to get a response from Clarke. Judging by the fact that Clarke is in the team, JB got one. I think he looks like more of a left winger than a left-back or left wing-back. not seen Clarke play so not fair to comment on his performance. I don’t like this kick up the arse approach to “management” though. In my experience I’ve unanimously found that people always respond much better to praise and a warm arm around the shoulder rather than a public humiliation. Sure if improvement feedback is needed then give it considerately, honestly, clearly and in private. Most people know when they've f**ked up and want to learn and improve. I didn’t like it when he did it to Luke Thomas and don’t like it in this case either. Makes Barton look a bit of a fool too when he’s forced to pick the player after saying the sort of things he did implying no future at the club There was no "kick up the arse" with regard to Clarke. JB had already tried the arm around the shoulder approach with Luke Thomas, since leaving Rovers he has commented that he needed the "kick up the arse" from Barton to get him back on track. Good management recognises that one method will not work for everybody, need to have back-up strategy in your locker.

Kilgour red card rescinded. Does that change any of the narrative?
Not seen why but if a dive why no retrospective action?

Not seen why but if a dive why no retrospective action? i have watched the vid several times and can see no reason as to why he was red carded...... not sure if the guy took a dive but it was a pure coming together.. if it was even that!!! , no intent from Kilgour, and he seemed to be confused at the way the ref rushed at him with the red? .... a crowd "sending off" i would say

It has completely puzzled me and I’ve no idea at all what he is trying to achieve by it. Can’t think it makes Clarke want to run through a brick wall for him. Try Barton’s approach with a lot of people I have known and you would be drinking through a straw for a very long time. It’s a last resort high risk method in my opinion and I’m certain there are plenty of other approaches that would have produced better results
