Ronaldo sets new Saudi Pro League scoring record..By Press Associationi2-prod.mirror.co.uk/incoming/article32905431.ece/ALTERNATES/s1200d/1_GettyImages-2150901120.jpgCristiano Ronaldo set a new record for goals scored in a Saudi Pro League season after a double for Al-Nassr against Al-Ittihad took his tally to 35. The 39-year-old netted twice in the 4-2 win to overtake Abderrazak Hamdallah's mark of 34 in 2018-19, though the Morocco striker's haul - also for Al-Nassr - came from four fewer matches. Portugal forward Ronaldo has scored 64 goals in 69 games for Al-Nassr in all competitions since joining on a free transfer in January 2023 after leaving Manchester United. The win meant Al-Nassr finished second in the table for the second successive season, 14 points behind champions Al-Hilal but 17 clear of third-placed Al-Ahli. Ronaldo has now scored 765 goals in his 22-year career for Sporting Lisbon, Manchester United, Real Madrid and Juventus. He also holds the record for international goals with 128 from 206 appearances for Portugal. Total Career Stats: Played: 1,260 - Goals: 911 - Clubs: Sporting CP, Manchester United, Real Madrid, Juventus, Al Nassr, Portugal U15, 17, 20, 23 and Portugal.i2-prod.dailystar.co.uk/incoming/article32906757.ece/ALTERNATES/n310p/1_Al-Nassr-v-Al-Ittihad-Saudi-Pro-League.jpg

Neymar's Al-Hilal beat the Portuguese star's team 5-4 in a penalty shootout at the end of a 1-1 match in the final of the King Cup of Champions. Ronaldo looked devastated at the final whistle, as his side fell short at the King Abdullah Sport City Stadium in Jeddah. i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/06/01/09/85589049-13483251-image-a-22_1717231012262.jpgThe Portuguese star fell to the floor in agony after finishing the season without silverwareThe 39-year-old was visibly upset at the conclusion of the match, and had to be consoled by members of the club's backroom staff. Ronaldo who signed for Al-Nassr in December 2022, fell to the ground in despiar, before leaving the field in tears. He continued sobbing on the bench, as he ended his first full season in Saudi Arabia without any major silverware. Ronaldo, who earlier hit the post with a spectacular overhead kick, converted his penalty. The saves gave Hilal an 11th King's Cup triumph while Ronaldo and his team will have to wait until next season. i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/06/01/09/85589131-13483251-image-a-26_1717231315140.jpgDisappointment was written on Ronaldo's face after he collected his runner-up medal

That's what football is. Moments, inexplicable moments. "A direct shot to give the team the lead. I didn't manage it. [Jan] Oblak made a good save... I have to see the penalty, I don't know if I shot well or badly, but I haven't missed once all year, and when I needed it most, Oblak saved it. "I think Portugal deserved it because we had more authority. Slovenia spent almost the entire game defending... it's very difficult and the whole team is to be congratulated, especially our goalkeeper who made three very good saves." Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo: "Portugal was always on top of it, pressing hard, but for one reason or another, didn’t score. "The pitch wasn’t great, it was very tough but I’d say all things considered, we were better. We deservedly reached the quarter-finals. "We’re still very excited, we want to enjoy our game, give the fans some joy and happiness and this is our life. This is how we live." ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/7/1/91e21e8f-e760-42bf-84a0-e75ba81d0261.jpgichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/7/1/d8ab0ca1-2eeb-4dee-9294-2b6ec4c3de89.jpg

Cristiano Ronaldo may face Euro 2024 punishment after penalty drama and 'illegal' move..by Samuel Meade.i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/07/02/16/86833141-13592473-Portugal_have_trusted_their_experience_this_tournament_with_defe-a-3_1719935891775.jpgCristiano Ronaldo could find himself in hot water with UEFA after his involvement in 'ambush marketing' following Portugal's last 16 victory. The Euro 2016 winners needed penalties to see off Slovakia, on a tumultuous night for Ronaldo, where there was no shortage of tears and no little relief. Afterwards Ronaldo had his heart rate data shared on social media. In doing so the Al-Nassr star showcased his collaboration with the fitness company WHOOP - who design wearable devices that track things like your heart rate, athletic performance, and sleep score. The practice is illegal as it sees a company attempt to associate their product or services with an event, in this case Euro 2024, which already has its own official sponsors. The 39-year-old is wearing one of their devices during his outings at the Euros and his heart rate data during Portugal's penalty shootout win was published by the company on Tuesday. Ricardo Fort - the former head of global sponsorships at Visa and Coca-Cola - has claimed on social media that the post was a clear example of ambush marketing and should be met with a fine for both player and company. He said: "This chart has been circulating today. Cristiano and WHOOP is ambush marketing to Euro 2024. It is illegal and both the player and the company should be fined." Fort later added: "The post is about a UEFA matches, uses the names of the two national teams playing, score, and a player on the field. They are implying an association with the event and that is illegal. Not having 'a competitor as a sponsor' isn't a reason to tolerate infringements." An example of a player facing a punishment for such an act came during Euro 2012 when Nicklas Bendtner pulled up his shirt as he celebrated to reveal a pair of Paddy Power branded underpants. The Dane was later fine £80,000 and banned for one competitive game by UEFA. Ronaldo endured a mixed night in the last 16 encounter but is likely to start in Portugal's quarter-final showdown with France on Friday. Former England captain Alan Shearer insists: "I don’t think Martinez has a choice - Ronaldo plays. We saw that in their third game when Portugal had already qualified, only three players had started from the previous 11 and Ronaldo was one of them. "He’s 39 years-old and he’s taking all the free-kicks, he took that penalty and missed it, although he deserves great credit for the way he took the first penalty in the shootout because the pressure on him was absolutely huge. "But Martinez doesn’t have a choice, if Ronaldo is fit Ronaldo plays. That’s the rule, I’m afraid." i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/07/02/14/86833293-13592473-image-a-10_1719928531345.jpg

Ronaldo deviated from his usual style by wearing glasses as he posed for a picture with his partner Georgina Rodriguez. He also wore a matching shirt and shorts. The Al-Nassr star is enjoying some time off ahead of the new season following his involvement with Portugal at Euro 2024. Ronaldo is currently back in Spain, where he enjoyed an incredible spell with Real Madrid between 2009 and 2018. i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/08/03/00/88103937-13704187-image-a-67_1722640240115.jpgDuring his time at Real, Ronaldo boasted an unbelievable record of 450 goals in 438 games, while he won four Champions Leagues, two LaLiga titles and two Copa Del Reys. A spell at Juventus followed before Ronaldo returned to Manchester United and later joined Al-Nassr. Since making the switch to Saudi Arabia, Ronaldo has scored 58 goals in 64 games for Al-Nassr. Ronaldo featured in all five of Portugal's games at Euro 2024 but the 39-year-old was unable to find the net at the tournament.

Cristiano Ronaldo pays emotional tribute to Portugal and ex-Real Madrid team-mate Pepe after the 41-year-old legend announces his retirement..by Sam Lawleyi.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/07/06/06/87002545-13606469-image-a-5_1720244761293.jpgCristiano Ronaldo has led the tributes to his former Real Madrid and Portugal teammate Pepe after the centre-back announced his retirement. The 41-year-old made his debut for Portuguese side Maritimo in 2001 and eventually made 737 club appearances, as well as receiving 141 caps for his national team, in a glittering career. The star won the Champions League with Real Madrid three times and also claimed three La Liga titles and two Copa del Rey trophies. He memorably tasted victory in the European Championships with Portugal in 2016 after beating hosts France in the final. Now his ex-colleague have flooded in with kind words for the Portuguese icon, who was known for his aggressive playing style and no-nonsense defending. Ronaldo, with whom Pepe kickstarted an era of European dominance for Real, took to Twitter to post an emotional tribute to his friend. He said: 'There are not enough words to express how much you mean to me, friend. 'We won almost everything there was to win on the field, but the greatest achievement is the friendship and respect I have for you. 'You are unique, my brother. Thank you for so much.' i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/07/06/06/87002527-13606469-image-a-2_1720244720317.jpgi.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/07/06/06/87002521-13606469-image-a-1_1720244717060.jpg

Cristiano Ronaldo scores his 1st goal of the season for Al-Nassr as superstar finds the net for the 23rd consecutive year..by Daniel DavisCristiano Ronaldo wasted no time in scoring his first goal of the season for Al-Nassr after finding the net against Al-Taawoun in the Saudi Super Cup semi-final. In the wake of his disappointing Euro 2024 campaign with Portugal this summer, the superstar returned to action at club level on Wednesday evening and delivered a sensational performance - capped off with a maiden strike and an assist. The evergreen 39-year-old found himself in the thick of the action in the game's early knockings and teed up Ayman Yahya for the breakthrough in the eighth minute. i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/08/14/20/88535231-13744111-image-a-57_1723665108363.jpgRonaldo then ensured he hit the ground running after tucking home a neat finish shortly before the hour mark following good work down the right from Yahya. Sultan Al-Ghannam received the ball from the winger and set up Ronaldo after squeezing in a cross from the byline, the veteran tucking home with aplomb. i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/08/14/20/88535263-13744111-image-a-59_1723665150384.jpgFive-time Ballon d'Or winner Ronaldo could even have notched a brace on his Saudi Arabian comeback but was agonisingly denied by the woodwork. His goal sensationally ensured he has now scored in 23 consecutive seasons...

Cristiano Ronaldo nets his 899th career goal with a stunning set piece for Al-Nassr - as the legendary forward moves one behind David Beckham in the all-time free-kick standings..by Adrian Bishopi.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/08/27/21/88992367-13785641-image-a-15_1724790940849.jpgCristiano Ronaldo netted the 899th goal of his career in Al-Nassr's win over Al Feiha on Tuesday. After Talisca gave the visitors the lead at the King Abdullah Sport City Stadium, Ronaldo has the chance to double their advantage after a foul on the edge of the box. Opting for placement over power, the 39-year-old curled his strike beyond the wall and into the top corner to the goalkeeper's left. The strike marked Ronaldo's 64th goal from free-kicks, moving him to just one behind fellow set-piece specialist and Premier League leader David Beckham's career total. i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/08/27/21/88992417-13785641-image-a-16_1724790943688.jpgWhile the Portuguese forward's free-kick record has him rubbing shoulders with some of the game's greats, he still has some work to do if he is to set the all-time record before hanging up his boots. Fondly remembered for his eight-year spell at Lyon, Juninho Pernambucano currently holds the title as the most prolific player in football history from a dead ball situation. The former Brazil international netted 198 career goals in all, with an astonishing 77 of those coming from free-kicks. Ronaldo's long-time rival Lionel Messi tops the chart for active players, with 65 free-kick goals in his glittering career. Speaking on his future plans, he revealed he could remain at the club for the remainder of his career: 'I don't know if I will retire soon, in two or three years... but probably I will retire here at Al Nassr.' 'I'm very happy at this club, I feel good in this country too. I'm happy to play in Saudi Arabia and I want to continue.' he added. i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/08/27/21/88992493-13785641-image-a-17_1724791006641.jpg Ronaldo is now just one goal behind David Beckham and Lionel Messi in the all-time free-kick standings

Jamie Carragher reveals just how close Liverpool were to signing Cristiano Ronaldo before he joined rivals Man United in 2003..by Ryan Walkeri.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/08/26/17/88945801-13781143-Carragher_explained_how-m-9_1724690374995.jpg i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/08/26/17/88945701-13781143-Ronaldo_became_one_of_the_world_s_best_during_his_formative_year-m-7_1724690364008.jpgJamie Carragher has revealed how Liverpool narrowly missed out on signing Cristiano Ronaldo to rivals Man United during his time at Anfield. Carragher has long-admired Ronaldo's career success and revealed how the Portuguese superstar could have joined Liverpool before signing for United from boyhood club Sporting Lisbon. The Liverpool icon also hailed Ronaldo's attacking qualities where he spent the best years of his career and scoring over 700 senior goals, admitting that he was the type of player the Reds didn't have at the time. When asked about how close Liverpool were to beating United, Carragher said on the Overlap, brought to you by Sky Bet: 'When he actually signed for United I think we were in for him. 'That was when Gerard Houllier and Phil Thompson - Phil Thompson tells the story that he thought we had him. 'He was speaking to the agent and before you know it, it breaks on Sky Sports News 'Ronaldo's gone to United' - and I think of what we lacked probably in the best teams I played in at Liverpool. 'I think we had world-class or great players in every position over a 10-year period, but I don't think we ever had a world-class wide player. 'Listen, we had the best in John Barnes, late eighties, but I think if you got through the nineties, I don't think we ever had a player of that ilk.' Ronaldo returned to United in 2021, where he starred during one season at the club but failed to win any silverware. i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/08/26/17/88945717-13781143-image-a-2_1724689880886.jpg

Cristiano Ronaldo reveals when he plans to retire from international football and hints it 'won't be a difficult decision' when the time comes..i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/09/02/23/89204125-0-image-a-1_1725317178765.jpgPortugal legend Cristiano Ronaldo says he has no plans to retire from international football yet - but it "won't be a difficult decision to make" when the time comes. The 39-year-old has more caps and more goals than anybody else in men's international football history, with 130 strikes in 212 games. He is in Portugal's squad for Nations League games with Croatia and Scotland. But Ronaldo comes into these games after a hugely disappointing Euro 2024 campaign where he failed to score and many felt he held the team back. The Manchester United and Real Madrid legend now plays in Saudi Arabia for Al-Nassr. "When the time comes, I'll move on," he said. "It won't be a difficult decision to make. "If I feel like I'm no longer contributing anything, I'll be the first to leave." The five-time Ballon d'Or winner says he "never considered leaving the national team" despite the post-Euro 2024 criticism. Ronaldo and team-mate Pepe, aged 41, were the two oldest players at Euro 2024. After their Euros exit, former Portugal international Jose Fonte told BBC Sport: "They probably know it's the end of the line in the national team. "They've done so much for Portugal. Sometimes you just have to give your place to the young boys coming up." Pepe has retired, with Ronaldo saying the defender "left through the front door". But the forward has opted to carry on. "People's expectations of the national team were too high," added Ronaldo on their quarter-final exit to France on penalties. Last month he said: "I don't know if I will retire soon, in two or three years, but probably I will retire here at Al-Nassr. "When I leave the national team, I won't tell anyone in advance and it will be a very spontaneous decision on my part, but also a very well thought-out one." i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/09/02/23/89204219-0-image-a-3_1725317421203.jpg

Ronaldo reaches 900 career goals - with his 34th minute strike against Croatia..Gary Rose, BBC Sport journalisti.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/09/05/21/89332167-0-image-a-34_1725568888992.jpgCristiano Ronaldo reached a significant milestone on Thursday by scoring the 900th goal of his illustrious career. The 39-year-old struck for Portugal in their Nations League game against Croatia, putting them 2-0 up. It prompted an emotional celebration by the forward, as he dropped to his knees by the corner flag in tears. The goal was his 131st for his country, while he has also scored at club level for Sporting Lisbon, Manchester United, Real Madrid, Juventus and current club Al-Nassr. Such is Ronaldo's longevity that if someone was born when he scored the first competitive goal of his career they would now be 21. He struck a double for Portugal's Sporting on 7th October 2002, at the age of 17 years eight months and three days in a 3-0 win against Moreirense. He then moved to Manchester United, scoring 118 goals in 293 games for the Red Devils before joining Real Madrid in 2009 for a then world record 94m euros (£80m). In nine years at the Spanish giants he scored 450 goals before making the move to Italy to join Juventus. He added another 101 goals to his tally during his three years with the Italian club before returning to United, where he would score 27 goals in 54 games. But a return to the Red Devils did not have the fairytale ending and in 2023 he made the move to Saudi Arabia with Al-Nassr where he has got 68 goals and counting. i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/09/05/21/89332539-0-image-a-35_1725569812440.jpgThere is no central database to establish men's football's all-time top scorer, but Ronaldo was already leading the way for official games at a high level. The Czech football association says Josef Bican, who played in Czechoslovakia and Austria, scored 821 goals in official matches. Elsewhere his tally is placed at 805 - but those include reserve-team and non-official international goals. Brazil legends Pele and Romario separately claim to have scored more than 1,000 goals each, but filter out friendlies and those numbers drop down to the 700s. Unofficial statisticians RSSSF,, external say Pele (769), Romario and Ferenc Puskas (both 761) are the players nearest to Ronaldo at the elite end of football. Lionel Messi, Ronaldo's long-time rival has scored 867 career goals to date.

Sunday 8th September 2024 - UEFA Nations League - League A - Group 1 - Venue: Estádio do Sport Lisboa e Benfica (da Luz) - Attendance: 59,894
Portugal 2 (Bruno Fernandes 54, Cristiano Ronaldo 88) Scotland 1 (S. McTominay 7)

Match report by Andrew Petrie, BBC Sport ScotlandCristiano Ronaldo’s late Nations League winner broke Scotland hearts in Portugal and ensured Steve Clarke's side's dreadful run of form continued. The visitors took a shock seventh-minute lead thanks to a Scott McTominay header and performed admirably in repelling Portugal’s 16 shots before the break. Another individual error robbed them of the lead though, when Angus Gunn allowed Bruno Fernandes’ long-range strike to creep into the net after the break. Ronaldo was introduced at half-time and twice hit a post before finally breaking the barricades, forcing in a delicious Nuno Mendes cross for his 901st career goal. The defeat - after losing to Poland on Thursday - means Scotland are now without a win in their last eight competitive games, the worst run in their history, and have won just one of the last 14 games. As for Ronaldo, what can you say? Maligned after a poor Euros, he was influential here. He has now scored against 48 different countries and stretched his lead at the top of the all-time international goalscorer chart in men's football. Surely no-one can catch him. i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/09/08/22/89424999-13827621-image-a-119_1725830685860.jpgi.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/09/08/22/89424959-13827621-image-m-121_1725830701535.jpg

Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale 'agreed to join Man United in 2013 but the club Refused to pay the £200m fee', Patrice Evra claims - with Sir Alex Ferguson 'revealing the news before his retirement'..by Lewis Browningi.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/09/30/19/90282053-13908469-image-a-54_1727720040908.jpgPatrice Evra has claimed that Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale had both agreed to join Manchester United in 2013. Evra spent eight years with United from 2006 to 2014 after joining from Monaco and was a key part of the side that enjoyed so much success under legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson. During a sensational 27-year reign at Old Trafford, Ferguson led United to 13 Premier League titles, two European championships and five FA Cups before his retirement in 2013. Things could have been easier, though, had Ronaldo and Bale joined 11 years ago, but Evra has claimed that the club refused to pay a £200million fee for both players and caused the deal to collapse. 'One of the most sad days,' Evra said on the Obi One Podcast of the day Ferguson decided to retire as United manager. 'I didn't cry, I was in shock. 'The reason why, is two weeks before, he brought me into his office and said: "Look at those people, they think I am going to retire, I am going to be another 10 years but we need to win more Champions Leagues." 'He said: "Patrice, Cristiano Ronaldo has agreed 99 per cent to come back and Gareth Bale." He needed £200m and the club refused. Now they have spent a billion, whatever. 'I remembered when I got out of his office, I was like, "Cristiano is back, Gareth Bale, we are back in business. Imagine. That's what he said.' Ronaldo left United for Real Madrid in 2009 for a then-world record fee of £80m and went on to play for the club until 2018, before leaving to join Italian giants Juventus. He would later return to United in 2021, but left just over a year later after launching a verbal attack on the club in a tell-all interview with Piers Morgan. Bale, meanwhile, was flying at Tottenham and joined Madrid in the summer of 2013 for an updated world record fee of £86m. Ronaldo would go onto win the Champions League four times with Madrid, while Bale won it five times with the club. i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/09/30/19/90282187-13908469-image-a-56_1727720239070.jpg

Match report by BBC mediaCristiano Ronaldo scored his 133rd Portugal goal as they beat Poland in the Nations League. Captain Ronaldo hit the crossbar from close range before Portugal took the lead through Bernardo Silva. The Manchester City player volleyed in from a knockdown by Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes. Al-Nassr forward Ronaldo doubled the lead when he slotted in a rebound after Rafael Leao hit the post following a fantastic run. It was Ronaldo's third Nations League goal in three games, having failed to net once at Euro 2024. He was replaced by Diogo Jota in the 63rd minute. Portugal were looking comfortable in Warsaw until Piotr Zielinski smashed in a shot to give Poland hope. But Southampton defender Jan Bednarek scored a late own goal - sliding Nuno Mendes' cross into his own net - to make Portugal's win safe. The hosts handed an international debut to Salford-born Maxi Oyedele. The 19-year-old, whose mother is Polish, joined Legia Warsaw from Manchester United in the summer - having had a loan spell with Forest Green last season. Portugal, who have won all three Nations League games, play Scotland - who have lost all three - at Hampden Park on Tuesday.

Match report by Andy Burke, BBC Sport Scotland Senior Reporter at HampdenScotland delivered a resolute defensive display to hold Portugal to a goalless draw and secure the first point of their Nations League A campaign. Cristiano Ronaldo was frustrated in his attempts to register a 134th goal in Portugal colours on his 200th international start. Ronaldo, who broke Scottish hearts when the sides met in Lisbon last month with the late decisive goal in Portugal's 2-1 victory, had his first sight of goal, but his low effort from the edge of the box was comfortably saved by Gordon. The visitors were dominating the ball and Francisco Conceicao blew a decent chance when he ballooned his effort way over the bar after being teed up by Ronaldo. Al-Nassr striker Ronaldo, having scored in each of his country's three previous Nations League victories to take his international goal tally to an outrageous 133, as always looked to take centre stage on his first appearance at Hampden. He prompted boos from the home crowd as he remonstrated with referee Lawrence Visser, then huge cheers from the Hampden faithful followed as he comically gave the ball away from a free-kick after being clattered by his former Manchester United team-mate McTominay. On the half-hour mark, the Real Madrid great and Portuguese icon attempted a bicycle kick, only to be penalised for a high boot. Ronaldo smacked the Hampden turf after sending a header over the bar from 12 yards early in the second half and was then denied by a last-ditch tackle from Grant Hanley as he was ready to pull the trigger having broken into the box. The greatest scorer in the history of men's international football had one last attempt, slicing wide after dancing inside a couple of defenders, and, with that, his chance to mark his Hampden bow with a goal was gone. i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/10/15/23/90897195-0-image-a-6_1729032500365.jpg

'I was sacked as Cristiano Ronaldo's manager – this is my stance on Lionel Messi debate'..Report By Ben Crawford and Maria Ortega
i2-prod.dailystar.co.uk/incoming/article31578991.ece/ALTERNATES/s1200d/3_Al-Hilal-v-Al-Nassr-Saudi-Pro-League.jpg Cristiano Ronaldo's former manager at Al Nassr has come forward to praise his ex-player Ex-Al Nassr manager Luis Castro has lauded Cristiano Ronaldo and argued his "constant desire" ranks him above Lionel Messi. Landing in Saudi Arabia in July 2023 to take over from former boss Rudi Garcia and command Pro League headliner Ronaldo, Castro's tenure began swimmingly as he rapidly claimed the Arab Club Champions Cup just one month into the role. However, he couldn't keep said momentum going after a King's Cup final loss to Al-Hilal and a string of subpar performances at the start of this new season, leading to his dismissal last month. Working closely with Ronaldo gave Castro insight into what makes the Portuguese icon tick, and the 63-year-old has now described the superstar and his tireless ethos as "the best". "Cristiano was, is and will be determined to be the best," Castro told Marca. "You can see it every day in every training session. He has a constant desire to play, to break records, to score the most beautiful goals. "When you are close to him, you understand why he is a phenomenon. He continues to be decisive in everything he does. He knows that football has given him almost everything and he has great love for it." Under Castro, Ronaldo bagged an unprecedented 35 league goals last season, setting a record as the first player to clinch domestic Golden Boot honours in four different nations. Last month, at 39 years young, he bagged his 900th career goal in Portugal's 2-1 Nations League victory against Croatia, and Castro has thrown his support behind Ronaldo to reach the illustrious 1,000-goal milestone. "Will he reach 1,000 goals? It won't depend on him, but on the context," Castro added. "We tried to get the most out of Cris, and we got him to finish 2023 as the top scorer of the year (54 goals). I hope he has a favourable environment around him and surpasses the 1,000-goal mark." Castro was also hugely complimentary of the great Portuguese forward’s work ethic during his time in charge of Al-Nassr, saying in 2023: “He [Ronaldo] is the world's greatest example of success in terms of rigour, work and discipline. “Do you think he needs me to make demands of him? No. You don't need to demand anything from Cristiano; he does it himself. He gives rigour, discipline, maximum demand, wanting to always win, wanting to shine before the world.” i2-prod.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/news/article33922747.ece/ALTERNATES/s1200e/0_TOPSHOT-FBL-RIYADH-CUP.jpg
