Sporting Lisbon are ‘on the verge’ of completing the remarkable signing of Manchester United striker Cristiano Ronaldo, according to reports.
Ronaldo reportedly asked to leave the Premier League club earlier this summer after they missed out on Champions League qualification.
Having handed in a transfer request and returned late to pre-season, the experienced forward has not hit the ground running this term.
In United’s two home matches in the Premier League, Ronaldo came off the bench, while he started his side’s 4-0 defeat at Brentford.
Playing in the Champions League is what the 37-year-old hopes to do this season, with the Red Devils preparing to compete in the Europa League.
He has been linked with Chelsea, Napoli, Bayern Munich, Marseille, Paris Saint-Germain, Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid and Sporting – who are all in Europe’s premier competition.
Ronaldo’s agent Jorge Mendes has been ‘working around the clock’ in order to secure his client’s Old Trafford exit before next week’s transfer deadline.
His move to Sporting is apparently ’99 per cent done’ and the Portuguese outfit will begin preparations for his presentation on Friday.
Perhaps the final one per cent of the deal hinges on who Sporting are put up against.
Here’s hoping Ronaldo is happy with Frankfurt, Tottenham and Marseille. I think he might be…

The Casemiro signing is bizarre. He must be a decent player with what he’s won but £70m! All Man U are doing is showing their desperation, just watch every other player they go for get another £20m added to the price. I thought I read that Ten Hag wanted to sign young, hungry players. That’s just happened when Man U have forked out £80m for Anthony from Ajax! Is he that good? I doubt it. UTG!

Cristiano Ronaldo: What next for the Manchester United star?On 27 August 2021, Manchester United confirmed the return of their prodigal son. Just over 12 months later and United's relationship with Cristiano Ronaldo has changed beyond all recognition. And Erik ten Hag needs to manage it very delicately. At the King Power Stadium on 1 September, the 37-year-old started on the bench and came on for the final 22 minutes of the 1-0 win at Leicester. His most significant contribution was an acrobatic overhead kick that bounced wide of the far post. In five appearances so far this season, the brilliant Portuguese has not managed a goal or an assist. It wasn't supposed to be like this. Yet there were red flags before Ronaldo's return. And not long afterwards, some were starting to wonder if United had done the right thing. Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer did not go into the 2021-22 season with the perfect squad. But he was starting to get close to his ideal team. Jadon Sancho had been brought in as the wide, attacking player he craved. Weeks persuading Edinson Cavani to remain at Old Trafford reached fruition in May when the Uruguayan signed a one-year extension. Raphael Varane had joined from Real Madrid to become the latest defender to try and secure United's leaky backline, although some wondered whether he was actually the leader they needed given the amount of time he had spent playing alongside Madrid captain Sergio Ramos. The defensive midfielder Solskjaer wanted had not been delivered but not even City's Pep Guardiola gets everything he wants. Ronaldo could not play the high tempo game Solskjaer was looking to introduce so a compromise in playing style was made. Solskjaer did have a plan to leave Ronaldo out of his team occasionally. However, the first time he did it, against Everton on 2 October, the debate around the move was immense even though it was only three days after a Champions League away game. The Norwegian said afterwards he had to "pick the right moments" to use Ronaldo. He started all seven matches after that until Solskjaer was sacked on 21 November. ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/161EF/production/_126570609_gettyimages-1236232835.jpgThe chances are Ten Hag will handle the situation more subtlety. Asked after the Leicester game if it was possible one of the greatest players ever was about to be reduced to the status of bit-part player, Ten Hag replied: "It's really early in the season and we have a squad. We have more than 11 starting players, that is what you see now, players now on the bench can play in one, two or three weeks." Ten Hag must also work to lift Ronaldo's mood. While BBC Sport was told only the player's exit could completely lift the negativity that surrounded the club, the words were uttered in the belief a parting of the ways was possible. In the end, that has not happened. Efforts to absolve Ronaldo of all blame from last season's catastrophic ending have been dismissed by United sources. But in truth, still no-one can really know whether Ronaldo was the reason United weren't even worse than they ended up being last season, or if he was one of the chief reasons for their poor form. Now though, for the first time since he arrived at Old Trafford as a raw teenager, Ronaldo has to prove himself. Can he be a team player, something his individual brilliance meant he never needed to bother about too much for so long? Can he maintain the facade of being supportive of his team-mates from the bench? Can, at 37, Ronaldo once again deliver goals for a team that puts a premium on pressing the opposition? It is 10 weeks until the Premier League breaks for the World Cup. It doesn't start again until 26 December, a week before the January transfer window opens. Most people, probably including the man himself, didn't anticipate Ronaldo spending that time as a Manchester United player. How he handles it will be fascinating. ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/7B77/production/_126570613_gettyimages-1413419629.jpgCristiano Ronaldo has found himself on the bench under new manager Erik Ten Hag

Cristiano Ronaldo turned down £211m-a-year in wages to play for an unnamed club in Saudi Arabia, but Manchester United's 37-year-old Portugal striker is now reconsidering the offer. Cristiano Ronaldo could consider huge transfer offer as Man Utd drought set to continue. Five-time Ballon d'Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo has failed to score for Manchester United this season and has a lucrative transfer offer on the table from Saudi Arabia. It's fair to say Cristiano Ronaldo isn't a guaranteed starter at Old Trafford. The Portugal international, 37, has started just one Premier League game for United this season - the humiliating 4-0 defeat by Brentford in August. The Real Madrid legend did get the opportunity to start against Real Sociedad at Old Trafford last Thursday - a game that was played just hours after the Queen's passing was announced - and he found the back of the net with a brilliant header. Frustratingly for the veteran, that goal was disallowed for offside and United lost 1-0. Ronaldo failed to grasp his chance. The idea of Ronaldo failing to score during the opening two months of this season would've been unthinkable 12 months ago, but that could become a reality. The Portuguese has dropped a hint that he's in line for a start against Sheriff. "Starting the week with a good feeling," he wrote on Instagram on Monday. Yet that might just be a message for Ten Hag. If Ronaldo can't break back into United's starting XI before the World Cup starts in November, a move could be on the cards. President of the Saudi Arabian Football Federation Yasser Al-Misehal has confirmed he wants Ronaldo to play in his country. "We would love to see a player like Cristiano Ronaldo playing in the Saudi league," he told The Athletic. "It would bring a huge positive feedback and it would be big news for everyone. I’m sure everyone knows the achievements and records of Cristiano Ronaldo, but also as a player who is a great role model. i2-prod.mirror.co.uk/incoming/article27888349.ece/ALTERNATES/s1200d/1_GettyImages-1242867132.jpgi2-prod.mirror.co.uk/incoming/article27972279.ece/ALTERNATES/s615b/0_GettyImages-1243114965.jpg

The OT return was in my mind a sentimental nightmare, and a money grabbing exercise by him, IMO He will go,and suck the money at will, as if he needs it, these type of leeches need to be gone from " real time football" and just show off at their will in front of people to whom money is of no consequence..be gone.

Cristiano Ronaldo: Audacious swap involving €100m striker detailed, as Italian and German experts reveal reasons behind Man Utd stay.
A plan that would’ve seen Victor Osimhen and Cristiano Ronaldo trade places has emerged, while two journalists have revealed what put potential suitors off the Man Utd legend.
Ronaldo made Manchester United aware of his desire to seek a new challenge this summer. The driving factor behind his stance was his love affair with the Champions League.
Indeed, Ronaldo received mind-boggling offers to grace the Saudi Arabian league. However, the opportunity to compete in the UCL was a non-negotiable with potential suitors.
Unfortunately from Ronaldo’s perspective, genuine interest from clubs that could satisfy his demand did not materialise.
Links to the likes of Chelsea, Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, AC Milan, Inter Milan, Napoli, Marseille and Sporting Lisbon all came to nothing.
However, if Manchester United fail to qualify for the Champions League and/or Ronaldo continues to be overlooked by Ten Hag, logic would dictate the option won’t be triggered.
A key ambition driving Ronaldo has widely reported to be maintaining his status as the UCL’s all-time top goalscorer.
Ronaldo (140) currently holds a 15-goal advantage over Lionel Messi (125). However, unless he leaves United in January, the Argentine will have a full season to close the gap. Messi is also two years younger.
Away from European competition, Ronaldo is now facing a fight for minutes at Old Trafford.
Ten Hag has continued with the 4-2-3-1 formation and Ronaldo can only play up top.
However, given Jadon Sancho and Antony are certain starters on the wing, Ronaldo is now in direct competition with resurgent pair Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial. The latter looked a player reborn in pre-season before the injury bug bit.
While Ronaldo’s place in the Portuguese side ahead of the World Cup isn’t in doubt, a lack of competitive action in the build-up will do him no favours in Qatar.
His fairy-tale return to Manchester last summer took less than a year to turn sour. However, he may not have hit rock bottom yet.

Cristiano Ronaldo: Manchester United forward charged by FA over fan's phone incident.
Manchester United forward Cristiano Ronaldo has been charged by the Football Association over footage which appeared to show him knocking a phone out of a fan's hand.
A video was shared on social media alongside comments claiming he smashed the device as he left the pitch after a 1-0 loss at Everton in April.
Ronaldo, 37, later apologised on social media.
He was cautioned by police regarding the incident in August.
"It is alleged that the forward's conduct after the final whistle was improper and/or violent," the FA said in a statement.
Manchester United said they would support Ronaldo in his response to the charge.
In an Instagram post after the incident, Ronaldo said it was "never easy to deal with emotions in difficult moments such as the one we are facing".
He added: "Nevertheless, we always have to be respectful, patient and set the example for all the youngsters who love the beautiful game.
"I would like to apologise for my outburst and, if possible, I would like to invite this supporter to watch a game at Old Trafford as a sign of fair play and sportsmanship."
This is an unprecedented case and regarded as non-standard, so there will be a hearing whether Ronaldo accepts the charge or not.
It could result in anything ranging from a warning to a suspension.
Tottenham's Eric Dier was banned for four matches two years ago when he went into the stand to confront a fan who had been in an argument with a family member.
It is an issue Ronaldo could have done without after a difficult summer during which he failed to get his desired move to a Champions League club and started the season on the bench under new manager Erik ten Hag.

'United are showing Ronaldo disrespect'Roy Keane has also accused the club of "showing disrespect" to Cristiano Ronaldo by leaving him sitting on the substitutes' bench. The 37-year-old Portuguese, who has started just one Premier League game this season, did not make it on to the pitch during Sunday's match with Ten Hag later revealing he did not use him as a mark of respect. However Keane, who played alongside Ronaldo during his first spell at Old Trafford, insists the reverse is true and that the club would have been better off allowing him to leave during the summer just a year after his return. He told Sky Sports: "I think United have shown nothing but disrespect to Ronaldo. They should have let him go when the opportunity came. "He did have options to go, I know that for a fact, and holding on to him to sit on the bench I think is ridiculous for a player of his stature. This idea that he'd no options is rubbish, he did have options, four or five very good options. "I think the manager is holding on to him - OK, you say you need options, but you don't hold on to Ronaldo to sit on the bench. He's one of the greatest players ever. "Today the manager, he brought Martial on and he scored two, so yeah, that's justified, but generally speaking, the bigger picture, he's not going to play Ronaldo, we know that. It's just going to get uglier as the season goes on." ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/153C6/production/_126828968_cristianoronaldo.jpg

Manchester United: Cristiano Ronaldo is unhappy at not playing regularly - Ten Hag.ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/0C9C/production/_126982230_gettyimages-1243114977.jpgManchester United manager Erik ten Hag says Cristiano Ronaldo is unhappy at not playing regularly. Ronaldo, 37, has started one Premier League game and two Europa League matches for United so far this season. He was an unused substitute in Sunday's 6-3 defeat by Manchester City, with Ten Hag saying the decision was "out of respect for his big career." "He's not happy that he wasn't playing Sunday" said Ten Hag before Thursday's Europa League game at Omonia Nicosia. "Of course, he wants to play and he's annoyed when he's not playing. It's clear." Ten Hag added: "But when I tell you all the players, when you're here and you're happy, or satisfied, when you're on the bench, this is not a club where you have to be, and especially Cristiano. "He's really competitive, as we all know. He's not happy of course when he's not playing. "But I already said and, I have to repeat, he's training well, he has a good mood, he's motivated and he gives his best. That is what we expect." Ten Hag's decision to leave Ronaldo on the bench as United was criticised with former United captain Roy Keane accusing the club of "showing disrespect" to the player. Instead, Anthony Martial was brought on and profited by scoring two late consolation goals. Ten Hag accepts the treatment for Ronaldo was specific. "I think, when you're honest, you know there is a difference. "Nobody is the same in the team, I will treat everyone with respect but they all have different backgrounds. "I have to treat players differently to get the best out of them, but there are general standards and values that count for everyone." ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/240/cpsprodpb/11A24/production/_126982227_cristianoronaldo_getty.jpg

Cristiano Ronaldo reached another landmark in his illustrious career by scoring his 700th club goal as Manchester United defeated Everton. The goal took the 37-year-old Portugal forward's tally to 144 for United in his two spells at the club. He scored 450 for Real Madrid, 101 for Juventus and five for Sporting Lisbon. Sunday's goal at Goodison Park was only the second of the season for Ronaldo, whose 699th goal came in the Europa League against FC Sheriff in September. Ronaldo started the Everton game on the bench but came on for the injured Anthony Martial in the 29th minute and scored what proved to be the winner 15 minutes later as United went 2-1 up. More records for Ronaldo Ronaldo club and country goals
Club goals - Club games - International goals - International games 700................ 943............ .......117............................. 191 Last year, Ronaldo made history by going top of the scoring charts in men's international football. A brace for Portugal against the Republic of Ireland moved him onto 111 goals for his national team, overtaking Ali Daei, who scored 109 times for Iran between 1993 and 2006. At club level, he is also the all-time top scorer in the Champions League with 140 goals - 13 more than long-time rival Lionel Messi. Ronaldo's latest strike also extended his advantage over Messi in total club goals scored, with the Argentina forward on 691 for Paris St-Germain and Barcelona. ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/13DC8/production/_127025318_cristianoronaldoandlionelmessi.pngRonaldo's goalscoring record for club and country is unrivalled, but there is a danger he could see his club tally come under threat this season. Messi is just nine behind the forward and has been in far more prolific form so far this season. The Argentina forward has scored seven goals in 12 games for PSG this campaign, including four in his last four appearances. Having Messi on his heels will no doubt keep the hunger for goals burning inside Ronaldo.

Cristiano Ronaldo: Improper conduct charge over fan's phone to be determined by FA hearing.Manchester United forward Cristiano Ronaldo's improper conduct charge will be determined by an FA hearing. Ronaldo is understood to have responded to the Football Association's charge of breaching rule E3, which relates to improper and/or violent conduct. It relates to an incident after United's Premier League defeat by Everton in April. Ronaldo was filmed appearing to knock a phone out of an Everton fan's hand as he made his way to the dressing room. It is not known whether Ronaldo has accepted the charge, although given the 37-year-old was cautioned by police in August and apologised to the young fan immediately after the incident, it is the most likely scenario, with the player set to argue there were mitigating factors that led to the incident. The Premier League defeat at Everton dealt a blow to United's hopes of qualifying for the Champions League, and they went on to finish sixth. In an Instagram post after the incident, Ronaldo said it was "never easy to deal with emotions in difficult moments such as the one we are facing". He added: "Nevertheless, we always have to be respectful, patient and set the example for all the youngsters who love the beautiful game. "I would like to apologise for my outburst and, if possible, I would like to invite this supporter to watch a game at Old Trafford as a sign of fair play and sportsmanship." Under FA rules the case must go to a hearing, although witnesses can be allowed to submit written evidence. ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/147AB/production/_127038838_whatsubject.jpg

Cristiano Ronaldo: Manchester United will fight any attempt to ban Portugal forward over his improper conduct charge.
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/12918/production/_127065067_gettyimages-1243854254.jpgManchester United will fight any attempt to ban Cristiano Ronaldo over the mobile phone incident at Everton in April. United manager Erik ten Hag said on Wednesday the Portugal forward 'will not accept' the Football Association's 'improper and/or violent conduct' charge. Ronaldo received a police caution after he knocked a phone out of a fan's hands in an incident following a 1-0 defeat by Everton at Goodison Park. He had been given until Monday evening to respond to the FA charge, which could only be brought following the end of Merseyside Police's involvement in the case in August. United had not stated what Ronaldo's response was. "We spoke about that and he will not accept it," said Ten Hag, ahead of Thursday's Europa League group game against Cypriot side Omonia Nicosia. The club subsequently clarified Ten Hag's remarks, saying that Ronaldo would not accept a harsh punishment, which United feel would be unfair, rather than disputing that the incident took place.

Cristiano Ronaldo will not be in Manchester United squad for Chelsea on saturday..Cristiano Ronaldo will not be part of Manchester United's squad for Saturday's game at Chelsea. The Portugal forward left Old Trafford before the end of Wednesday's 2-0 Premier League win over Tottenham - for which he was an unused substitute. "The rest of the squad is fully focused on preparing for that fixture," a club statement said. United say the 37-year-old remains an important part of the squad but regard this as a disciplinary matter. The game he will miss at Stamford Bridge is a big one, with United just one point behind fourth-placed Chelsea. Several media outlets are reporting he refused to come on as a late sub against Spurs. Ronaldo left the bench and walked down the tunnel in the 89th minute, even though United had only made three of their permitted five substitutions. He briefly went into the dressing room before leaving the stadium. Manager Erik ten Hag said afterwards that he would "deal with" the issue on Thursday. Ronaldo had also showed his displeasure at being substituted during Sunday's 0-0 home draw with Newcastle. Former United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel said Ronaldo would have been aware such behaviour would create "headlines". "It's the first time I can say that I am disappointed with him. Normally I back him; I understand his situation," Schmeichel told BBC Radio 5 Live. "We are in transition. Manchester United are now five managers down the road since Alex Ferguson. "We have got Erik ten Hag in now who has very clear ideas about the way he wants to play football. We need understanding and time from everyone. "We don't need distractions like that, and that's a disappointment, I would say." ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/240/cpsprodpb/AF42/production/_127266844_gettyimages-1244083471.jpg

Ten Hag wants contract ‘ripped up’ as Ronaldo ‘loses last few allies’ in Man Utd dressing room..
Erik ten Hag wants Cristiano Ronaldo out of Manchester United after the striker ‘lost the few allies he had left’ in the first team dressing room.
Ronaldo stormed down the tunnel and out of Old Trafford before the end of United’s 2-0 win over Tottenham on Wendesday.
Manager Erik ten Hag said he would “deal with” Ronaldo on Thursday in his post-match interview and did just that, with a United statement confirming he would not be involved in Saturday’s clash with Chelsea.
The Sun report Ten Hag is ‘furious’ and wants Ronaldo out of the club having fined the 37-year-old two weeks wages, amounting to £720,000, for defying his manager.
The Dutch boss ‘wants either the player’s contract, that runs to the end of the season, ripped up or for the Portuguese to be dumped in the January transfer window’, according to the report.
It’s claimed ‘Ronaldo has lost the backing of the few allies he had left in the Red Devils camp’ with ‘several squad members already upset with him for trying to engineer a move out of the club early in the season’.
His Spurs strop was ‘the final straw for the few team-mates who had continued to back him’.
Ronaldo released a statement which has been branded “absolutely pathetic”, in which he failed to apologise for his ‘heat of the moment’ actions.
The statement read: ‘As I’ve always done throughout my career, I try to live and play respectfully towards my colleagues, my adversaries and my coaches. That hasn’t changed. I haven’t changed
‘I’m the same person and the same professional that I’ve been for the last 20 years playing elite football, and respect has always played a very important role in my decision-making process.
‘I started very young, the older and most experienced players examples were always very important to me.
‘Therefore, later on, I’ve always tried to set the example myself for the youngsters that grew in all the teams that I’ve represented.
‘Unfortunately that’s not always possible and sometimes the heat of the moment gets the best of us.
‘Right now, I just feel that I have to keep working hard in Carrington, support my teammates and be ready for everything in any given game.
‘Giving in to the pressure is not an option. It never was. This is Manchester United, and united we must stand. Soon we’ll be together again.’

Cristiano Ronaldo: Manchester United forward returns to group training..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/DFE1/production/_127331375_whatsubject.jpgCristiano Ronaldo takes part in Manchester United training on Tuesday Manchester United forward Cristiano Ronaldo has returned to group training after being ordered to train alone last week by manager Erik ten Hag. Ronaldo, 37, refused to come on as a substitute against Tottenham last Wednesday and was subsequently dropped for Saturday's 1-1 draw at Chelsea. Ten Hag later said there had to be "consequences" for his actions. It is understood there has been communication between Ronaldo and Ten Hag over the the past few days. Ronaldo blamed the "heat of the moment" after he left Old Trafford before the end of United's 2-0 win over Spurs, having left the bench and walked down the tunnel in the 89th minute. The Portuguese's presence in training suggests he is in contention to play in Thursday's Europa League Group E home game against Moldovan club Sheriff Tiraspol. Defender Harry Maguire and midfielder Donny van de Beek also trained on Tuesday after recent injury problems.
