By Abdujalil Abdurasulov - BBC News, Kyiv. www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-65313367 The Russians are using prisoners as cannon fodder in Bakhmut,no doubt they would see it as a good result to lose 7 or 10 convicted criminals to kill a decent soldier. The Red army used the same 'tactics' in WW2, mass attacks on German positions, NKVD behind the attack shooting any shirkers. Looking at the pictures of the battle area around Bakhmut it looks like WW1 on the Western front.

From various reports and sources it looks as though the Uke offensive will begin very soon. Already there are reports of various Uke assaults going in. It appears that they are (to use a military term) 'shaping the battlefield'. This means that various things are happening to prepare for the offensive. For example, there maybe an assault somewhere which is designed to draw Russian forces to it, and therefore away from where the main assault may happen. Or various supple dumps, railway lines, bridges etc may be hit to hamper the logistics within that area. Of course, when you are 'shaping' you have to do it in a way that still does not indicate where the main offense will happen. I read that the Ukes have formed 8 brigades from their new troops,I expect that they will be stiffened with cadres of experienced troops from existing formations much as new British and German units were in WW2. This offensive (or offensives ) will be vulnerable when the units concentrate prior to attacking,Russian satellites (or satellite information from friendly countries) could pinpoint forming up areas to attack from the air. The Dnieper river must be crossed to attack some positions, this will be a problem but if the Ukes have good intel I think that they can break through the Russian positions in some places, whether they have enough troops to exploit successful breakthroughs we will find out. Reports coming in suggest that the Ukes have crossed The Dnipro River! There seems to be a bit of a media blackout going on again. Last time this happened was during the major Uke offensive late last Summer.

Yes,I saw the reports yesterday but theres not a lot of detail, one report suggested that Kherson has been constantly shelled since the Russians pulled out and not many civilians have moved back there so the bridgehead has been made to push the Russian artillery out of range....we will see.

Ukraine war: Bakhmut defenders worry about losing support..By Jonathan Beale, BBC Defence correspondent, Bakhmut.ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/240/cpsprodpb/39CC/production/_129469741_1704_gradcommander.jpgA year ago Volodymyr and his men were firing all 40 barrels of their BM-21 Grad rocket launcher in one go. Now they can only afford to fire a few at a time at Russian targets. "We haven't got enough ammunition for our weapon," he explains. His unit, the 17th Tank Battalion, is still being called on to provide fire support to Ukrainian forces desperately clinging on to the edges of Bakhmut, the eastern Ukrainian city which Russia has spent months trying to capture. Russian forces are getting ever closer to their goal of taking the city, but at enormous cost. While we're waiting in a line of trees, hidden from view, Volodymyr receives a call to fire his rocket launcher at a Russian mortar position about 15 kilometres away. His men remove the branches camouflaging their vehicle. They drive towards an empty field about a kilometre away and quickly work out the range. They elevate the rocket barrels towards the target while, out of sight, a Ukrainian drone hovering above assesses their accuracy. They're told their first rocket misses by about 50 metres, so they adjust the elevation and fire another two and quickly return to the trees for cover. This time they're told they've hit the target. Volodymyr however, is frustrated they can't do more. "We could have provided more support to our guys who are dying there." He says Ukraine has already burned through its own stocks of Grad ammunition, so is relying on rockets sourced from other countries. Volodymyr says supplies are coming from the Czech Republic, Romania and Pakistan. He complains the rockets originating from Pakistan are "not of a good quality". At another location near Bakhmut, Ukrainian troops from its 80th Brigade are already expending hundreds of artillery rounds a day, to try to repel Russia's advances. They are already using some of the weapons supplied by the West. Serhiy and his men are operating a British made L119 light artillery gun. But Serhiy says they too are having to ration rounds. He says they're firing on average 30 rounds a day. "We've got enough people for the moment", he says. "But we need ammunition. Ammunition is the most important." I ask Serhiy if this is the make or break year for Ukraine. "If we go on the offensive this year and retake our land, then we'll win," he replies. "But, if that doesn't happen, then we don't have the resources for the war to go on for another five to ten years." Volodymyr, the commander of the Grad, is even more blunt. "The country is exhausted, the economy too," he says. And he fears that if Ukraine's action on the battlefield are not decisive this year then Western support may falter. "We are also worried our Western allies are getting tired of helping us."

Drone attack on the Kremlin, false flag ? if so will Russia use some devastating missile attack on Kiev ? Seems like it to me. A small drone which only has a limited range (say 10k max). It exploded in the air before it hit, and doesn't appear to be carrying explosive but just something to make a bright flash and lots of flames for effect.

Not sure if it's appropriate to post this on here,a thread based heavily on military strategy, but it might throw up a point or two.
Donald Trump told Nigel Farage he could end this war very quickly. In a day.

Trump would likely stop support to Ukraine and switch to helping his mate Putin. Wouldn’t end the war in a day though.
Perhaps he thinks he would test a nuke on Kiev?

I wonder if Russia keep making drone and missile attacks on Ukrainian cities to deplete Ukraines air defence missiles ? maybe in preparation for strikes on the expected offensive ? I would be interested to know the cost of a nights air defence missile expenditure.

Some people have a different memory of the Trump presidency to me,I dont remember any major wars or flare ups (certainly nothing like we have seen since) Trump says that 'war is bad for business' This war (and the knee jerk sanctions) are ruining economies and will cause hunger and starvation, I am sure that Trump would stop it,he went to meet whatisname in North Korea and met Putin. History will see that Trump was a great World leader,I wouldnt be surprised if he gets a Nobel peace prize.

Almost tells it's own tale as the ruskies have now blamed the USA for enabling those " drones" to get to the Kremlin with electronic aid ..so tiresome....you would really think that somewhere amongst the millions of people in that country there would be some sort of uprising large enough to overthrow the current loonies in power

I’d argue that his sycophancy and sucking up to Putin has emboldened the latter and resulted directly in the Ukraine conflict. Luckily there is a long list of more worthy candidates for a NPP ahead of him. Giving the orange w**kpuffin a NPP would be akin to giving one to any of the creatures on the following lists en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:People_indicted_for_war_crimesI’m also no fan of Blair either and despite the good he did as pm his legacy will always be tarnished with the dodgy dossier and cosying up to Bush Jr like the sly weasel kid holding the playground bully’s coat
