Update: Alabama shooting: Four dead at Dadeville 16th birthday party..By Jessica Parker and James Gregoryichef.bbci.co.uk/news/240/cpsprodpb/12C12/production/_129381867_dadeville-index1-reuters.jpgAt least four people have been killed in a mass shooting at a 16th birthday party in the US state of Alabama. Twenty-eight people were injured, some critically, after shots were fired at the Mahogany Masterpiece Dance Studio in the city of Dadeville on Saturday. High school senior Phil Dowdell, a star athlete, has been named by local media as one of the victims. President Joe Biden renewed his calls for tougher gun laws after the incident. "What has our nation come to when children cannot attend a birthday party without fear?" Mr Biden asked, in a statement released by the White House on Sunday. This shooting takes the US to a grim milestone of more than 160 mass shootings - in which four or more people are shot - so far this year, according to the Gun Violence Archive. With a population of about 3,200 people, Dadeville is a small, rural city which is not used to scenes of violence on this scale. What is striking right now, and unusual, is how little we know about a possible suspect. Next to no details have emerged about how the shooting was brought to an end, or whether a suspect has themselves died or is in custody. Sgt Jeremy Burkett of the state's law enforcement agency said the investigation would be a "long, complicated process". "We're going to work in a methodical way to go through this scene, to look at the facts and ensure that justice is brought to bear for the families," he said late on Sunday. The injuries ranged from "extremely critical" to minor, he said. It is likely that most of the victims were teenagers. Some of the parents were still searching for information about their children 12 hours after the shooting took place. Among those who are known to have been killed is Phil Dowdell, who was named by his grandmother in local media. He was a senior in high school and was going to Jacksonville State University on an American football scholarship. Pastor Ben Hayes, who serves as chaplain for the Dadeville Police Department and for the local high school football team, said: "One of the young men that was killed was one of our star athletes and just a great guy. "I knew many of these students. Dadeville is a small town and this is going to affect everybody in this area." At a local parking lot where a vigil was being held, teenagers could be seen visibly shaking and crying from the shock of what happened last night. Many shared hugs and tears as they tried to comfort one another. One woman at the vigil, Shondra, told the BBC her cousin was at the birthday party last night. "They were being free, they were celebrating a life," she said. "You never think it's going to happen in your area." Keenan Cooper, the DJ at the birthday party in the dance studio, told reporters he tried to help get guests under tables when it started, but it was too dark to see where and who the shots were coming from. He said the party was for Phil Dowdell's sister, as earlier reported by local outlet the Montgomery Advertiser. The area around the dance studio remains cordoned off. As the town woke to the news on Sunday, Alabama's state governor Kay Ivey said: "This morning, I grieve with the people of Dadeville and my fellow Alabamians. "Violent crime has no place in our state, and we are staying closely updated by law enforcement as details emerge," the governor added in a statement on Twitter. Alabama is a state known for protecting the right of citizens to own guns, and the Republican governor's message of condolence has been met with criticism on social media by those advocating for gun law reform. Ivey is a strong supporter of second amendment rights - the right to keep and bear arms - and last year signed legislation ending a requirement to obtain a permit to carry a concealed handgun in public. Her candidacy for last year's governor election was endorsed by the National Rifle Association. The incident in Tallapoosa County, in the east of Alabama, follows a shooting on the same day at a park in Louisville, Kentucky, which killed two people and injured four others. In his own statement, Mr Biden said the nation was "once again grieving" and described the rise in shootings as "outrageous and unacceptable". He said the American people wanted lawmakers to act on "common sense gun safety reforms".

Update: Alabama shooting: Phil Dowdell died saving sister's life..By Jessica Parkerichef.bbci.co.uk/news/240/cpsprodpb/13983/production/_129395208_thumbnail_image0-1.jpgA teenager who was among four people killed in a mass shooting at a 16th birthday party in Alabama died saving his sister's life, say family. Phil Dowdell, 18, pushed the birthday girl, Alexis Dowdell, to the ground as gunfire erupted during the celebration at a dance studio in the community of Dadeville. "The last thing I told him was to stay strong," Alexis told the BBC. Thirty-two other people were injured in Saturday night's attack. Alexis said Phil had gone to get her after hearing that someone had a weapon. As gunfire erupted, he pushed her down to the ground before the two became separated in the melee, she added. Later, when she found him again, Alexis said her dying brother had been unable to talk, though he opened his eyes and raised his eyebrows while she held him in her arms. Alexis and her mother, LaTonya Allen, told the BBC they did not know what had led to the shooting. Ms Allen said her son made her proud "in every way". Police have yet to name a suspect or a motive in the shooting in Dadeville, a small, close-knit town of roughly 3,000. Ms Allen said before the shooting started she had heard rumours that someone at the party had a gun. So she turned on the lights and went to the DJ booth and spoke into the microphone, asking whoever had a firearm to leave the party. When no-one spoke up, she turned the lights back off, she said. Shortly afterwards, chaos was unleashed in the studio, Alexis said. "All of a sudden you hear gunshots and you just see everybody running towards the door and people falling and screaming," she told the BBC. Alexis said she had been able to escape the venue. She took cover outside before someone came to help her up, and they went to hide behind another building in case the attacker was still on the loose, she said. When she returned to the scene, she said she found out her brother had been shot. The Dadeville attack takes the US to a grim milestone of more than 160 mass shootings so far this year, according to the Gun Violence Archive, which defines such events as ones in which four or more people are shot.

Breaking: Omagh: Off-duty police officer shot..An off-duty police officer has been shot at a sports complex in Omagh, County Tyrone. There are unconfirmed reports that he was hit multiple times on the Killyclogher Road at about 20:00 GMT. The Northern Ireland Ambulance Service received a call at 20:00 GMT following reports of an incident. A crew was dispatched. One person was taken by ambulance to Altnagelvin Area Hospital in Londonderry. His condition is unknown. Ulster Unionist assembly member for Fermanagh and South Tyrone Tom Elliott said the shooting had taken place "in front of young people at football coaching session". He said it was a "despicable and cowardly action". Democratic Unionist leader Sir Jeffrey Donaldson condemned the "cowards responsible for this". Former justice minister and Alliance leader Naomi Long said her thoughts were with those affected by this "evil act of cowardice". SDLP leader Colum Eastwood, MP, said it was a "chilling attack on an individual serving his community". Detective Chief Inspector John Caldwell was shot while off-duty in Omagh, County Tyrone, on Wednesday night. The high-profile detective was shot multiple times after coaching young people playing football. Police said he was putting balls in the back of his car, accompanied by his son. An attempted murder investigation has been launched. Police said they were keeping an open mind but the "primary focus" was on dissident republicans. Assistant Chief Constable Mark McEwan said Mr Caldwell was critical but stable in hospital. ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/490/cpsprodpb/17C34/production/_128723379_herotemp2.jpg Update: John Caldwell: Detective shot in dissident republican attack leaves hospital..A senior detective who was shot at a sports complex in County Tyrone has been discharged from hospital, police confirmed. Det Ch Insp John Caldwell, 48, suffered life-changing injuries in the attack in Omagh on 22 February. Police believe the dissident republican group the New IRA was behind the attack. On Thursday, the PSNI said he had left hospital to continue his recovery. "We would ask that John and his family are given privacy at this time," a spokesperson said. A total of 15 people have been detained during the investigation into the attack. Police have previously said they were "working relentlessly to bring those responsible to justice". On Thursday, the Police Federation for Northern Ireland said DCI Caldwell's discharge was "wonderful news". "A long road to recovery ahead so we reiterate the appeal to give the Caldwell family the peace and privacy they deserve," the organisation said. DCI Caldwell was attacked while putting footballs into his car after coaching young people at football. The shooting, which occurred in front of school children, has been widely condemned by political figures across Northern Ireland.

Interesting article in the Washington Post about a recent mass shooting, the shooter (who was killed by the Police) was reported to be a 'white supremacist' apparently he was a 'Latino'. The article also mentions the Proud Boys leader an Afro/Cuban but the Proud Boys are often called white supremacists by the media, looking at a few pictures of Proud Boy rallies it seems that quite a few of them are non white...maybe more of what Trump calls 'fake news' ?

The investigation into who shot Det Ch Insp John Caldwell is one of Northern Ireland's biggest in recent times. He was attacked in February by two gunmen as he coached youth football while off-duty in Omagh, County Tyrone. The 48-year-old's young son was at his side when he was ambushed. The CCTV footage has been obtained from 750 cameras located between Belfast and Omagh. Police believe dissident republican group the New IRA may have acted with an organised crime gang to carry out the attack. Det Ch Insp Caldwell is in regular contact with the team investigating his shooting and there is an "added determination" to catch those responsible because he is a colleague. Det Supt Eamonn Corrigan, who is leading the attempted murder inquiry, said: "We are lucky John didn't die. "He is making a good recovery but it is going to be a long road." Det Supt Corrigan said the wounded officer, who was discharged from hospital in April, has given investigators his account of the shooting. He added the investigation had made "significant progress", but gave no further details. To date, 15 people have been arrested and there have been 40 searches of premises and land. More than 340 witnesses have been interviewed so far. Two Ford Fiesta cars used in the attack had been bought about 70 miles away, in Glengormley and Ballyclare, County Antrim, weeks prior to be used in the shooting. They were found burned out following the attack. Attempting to trace their movements has meant obtaining footage from hundreds of cameras spread over a large area. Detectives are poring over the material in several viewing rooms within a Belfast police base. "All the detectives working on the case know the importance of CCTV and the fact that a 15 or 20-second piece of footage could be crucial in building a case," said Det Supt Corrigan. "An attack of this nature is carried out by multiple people who are organised. "We are looking for movements of people and vehicles over time. It is time consuming and a lot of patience is required," he added. The New IRA has admitted responsibility for the attack, but police believe a crime gang may have aided it. Det Ch Insp Caldwell has run investigations into both paramilitary groups and organised crime gangs. "Whether these people are members of a terrorist organisation or an organised crime organisation, this has been an attack on a serving police officer at the behest of the New IRA," Det Supt Corrigan said. "How they carry out their operations and support them logistically is not for me to decide. "I will follow the evidence and bring people who are responsible before the courts."

Not a shooting but it has to go somewhere...New York truck attacker gets 10 life sentences plus 260 years..By Sean Seddon. An Islamic State supporter behind the deadliest terror attack in New York since 9/11 has been told he will die in prison serving multiple life sentences. Sayfullo Saipov killed eight when he drove a truck at pedestrians and cyclists on a Manhattan street in 2017. He was given 10 life sentences - eight of which run consecutively - plus 260 years, and will never be released. As he was sentenced, he was told he had "destroyed so many lives" - but showed no remorse during the trial. Saipov was confronted by victims' families and survivors in court, with the judge noting his "sheer unrepentant nature" during sentencing on Wednesday. The Uzbekistan national, now 35, used a rented truck to attack cyclists and pedestrians at random on downtown Manhattan's West Side on the evening of Halloween 2017. He shouted "God is great" in Arabic and was shot by police as he emerged from the vehicle. He hoped the atrocity would earn him membership of the group, a previous hearing was told. He is expected to be held in Colorado's high-security "supermax" prison, where inmates spend up to 23 hours a day in their cells. Monica Missio, the mother of victim Nicholas Cleves, told the courtroom: "It disgusts me that he gets to wake up every day while my son does not." "His barbarism and cruelty fills me with rage," she said. Rachel Pharn, who survived the attack, said she could forgive Saipov for the impact on herself, but not for the suffering he had caused to others who had come to hear the sentencing. She added: "When I look around the room, when I think of all the pain you caused, that I cannot forgive. That is between you, them and Allah." Five of those killed were tourists from Argentina, and a 31-year-old woman from Belgium who was visiting the city also died. Two Americans, a 32-year-old financial worker and a 23-year-old software engineer, were killed, while 12 others were injured. US District Judge Vernon Broderick said Saipov's crimes were notable "both in terms of the impact it had on the victims and on the sheer unrepentant nature of the defendant". Addressing the court before sentencing, Saipov appeared to repeat his praise of the terror group and suggested he was unmoved by the testimony he had heard. He was spared the death penalty when a jury did not unanimously agree to impose one at a hearing last week. Further details of the attack on the 31st of October 2017 is on the link below..en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2017_New_York_City_truck_attacki2-prod.mirror.co.uk/incoming/article30008322.ece/ALTERNATES/s615b/0_Bike-Path-Attack-02-Nov-2017.jpg

John Caldwell: Seven men charged with attempted murder..Seven men have been charged with the attempted murder of senior Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) detective John Caldwell. Det Ch Insp Caldwell was shot in front of his young son at a sports complex in Omagh, County Tyrone, on 22 February. Two of the men are aged 28, and the five other men are aged 33, 38, 45, 47 and 72. All seven men are expected to appear before Dungannon Magistrates Court on Monday. The PSNI say the 38 and 45-year-olds are also charged with membership of a proscribed organisation, namely the IRA. Officers have previously stated they believe the dissident republican group the New IRA may have had a role in the attack. Life-changing injuriesThree of the men, aged 28, 33 and 47, have also been charged with preparation of terrorist acts. The seven men were arrested on Friday along with four others - two men and two women. Those four were released earlier on Saturday by police, pending a report to the Public Prosecution Service (PPS). Det Ch Insp Caldwell, who had just finished coaching youth football when he was shot, sustained life-changing injuries. The attack was widely condemned by political figures across Northern Ireland and beyond. Det Ch Insp Caldwell was visited by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak during his treatment. He was discharged from hospital in April. The detective made his first public appearance since then at Hillsborough Castle on Wednesday where had an audience with the King.

Brittany: Girl, 11, from British family shot dead in France..By Hugh Schofield, BBC News, Paris.ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/240/cpsprodpb/1538E/production/_130062968_france_saint_herbot_alamy.jpgAn 11-year-old girl from a British family has been shot dead while playing in her garden in France, following a reported dispute between neighbours. The family were enjoying a barbeque on Saturday evening when the shooting happened in the village of Saint-Herbot, north of Quimper in Brittany. The girl's parents were also hurt, with the father suffering serious injuries, local media reported. The UK said it was providing assistance to a British family. The girl and her eight-year-old sister were playing on a swing as their parents tended the barbecue, when a neighbour began firing at them with a shotgun through a hedge. The younger girl ran to another neighbour's house to raise the alarm and is now said to be in shock. The suspect, described as a 71-year-old Dutch national, reportedly shut himself in his house following the incident but eventually surrendered to police and was arrested along with his wife. Locals said the man was something of a recluse who was in dispute with the British family over a plot of land adjoining the two properties. Local media reported that the family had lived in the village for several years. Prosecutor Carine Halley said the circumstances around the incident were not yet known. Marguerite Bleuzen, the mayor of Plonévez-du-Faou commune, said: "We knew the family well. There is a village fête every year and they always came. "It is incomprehensible to have shot a child. No-one can understand how that could have happened." A spokeswoman for the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office said: "We are providing consular assistance to a British family following a shooting in France and are in contact with the local authorities."

Brittany: France shooting suspect under investigation for murder..By Hugh Schofield in Saint Herbot and Natasha Preskey, BBC News.ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/490/cpsprodpb/377F/production/_130070241_e0998bc08f5166bb26cf75865d6a75ff0edce5c9.jpgThe suspect held over the fatal shooting of an 11-year-old British girl in France is under investigation for murder, prosecutors say. Solaine Thornton was shot dead while playing on a swing in her garden on Saturday evening. Prosecutors said Dirk Raats, a 71-year-old neighbour, got to within 10m of the girl's father before opening fire through a hedge. He had been in conflict with the family over building work on their property. Mr Raats then shut himself in his house in the village of Saint-Herbot, north of Quimper in Brittany, following the incident but gave himself up to police an hour later. His wife, who was also arrested, surrendered half an hour after he did, but she has since been released. Prosecutor Camille Miansoni said the couple had been in conflict for years with their British neighbours over works taking place on their property. The suspect was "profoundly exasperated" over the works, which he said affected his privacy and caused disturbance to him and his wife. Mr Miansoni said the suspect had gone into his home to fetch one of the guns and returned to the garden before opening fire and shooting three or four times through a hedge. This suggested a level of premeditation, he said. "It appears that he clearly aimed at the father, that he aimed at his wife, but however he seems less clear as to a possible admission that he aimed at the girl," Mr Miansoni said. Solaine Thornton and her eight-year-old sister Celeste had been playing on a swing as their parents tended the barbecue when the neighbour began firing. The younger girl ran to another neighbour's house to raise the alarm and is now said to be in shock. A local resident told French media that the younger child ran to neighbours shouting: "My sister is dead, my sister is dead". The victim's parents Adrian and Rachel Thornton were also hurt and are in hospital. A search of Mr Raats' home uncovered two rifles, one of which had not been previously declared. The couple, both Dutch nationals, tested positive for alcohol and cannabis. They had no previous convictions, prosecutors said. Mr Miansoni said the suspect had expressed regret, and that a mental health assessment had found nothing notable.

Nine injured in mass shooting after Denver Nuggets NBA win..i2-prod.mirror.co.uk/incoming/article30220225.ece/ALTERNATES/s1200d/0_2023-NBA-Finals-Game-Five.jpgi2-prod.mirror.co.uk/incoming/article30220379.ece/ALTERNATES/s615b/0_2023-NBA-Finals-Game-Five.jpgNine people were wounded in a shooting in downtown Denver last night after a suspect opened fire while basketball fans were celebrating the Nuggets' NBA win. The suspect, who has not been named, was among those injured and was taken into custody. He opened fire at 12.30am, around three hours after the Nuggets defeated Miami Heat, and after thousands had packed out Market Street and the surrounding area. Most of the revelers seen in chaotic videos hanging from street lights and sitting atop traffic lights had gone home, but a small crowd was still in the area. Police are yet to confirm if the shooting was related to the basketball result, or whether the suspect is a Nuggets or Heat fan. Nine people were wounded; three were taken to the hospital in critical condition, while six suffered non-life-threatening injuries. The suspect was also injured. It's unclear if that was the result of return fire. 'As far as what led up to this altercation that resulted in the shots being fired, that´s still under investigation at this time,' police spokesperson Doug Schepman said. 'It did occur in the area where we had largest gathering of folks celebrating during the night.' A small crowd was in the area at the time of the shooting, he said, but had 'diminished quite a bit at that point.' He said the shooting was in an area where a lot of people might have come out of bars after the game. Police were interviewing witnesses and Schepman described the ongoing investigation 'expansive.' The scene in Denver after the Nuggets' win was chaotic. Thousands poured onto Market Street after the historic win, with fans scaling street lights and traffic lights while others chanted, danced and blocked traffic. By the time of the shooting, the crowd has largely dispersed, according to police.

Connor Chapman pleaded not guilty today at Liverpool crown court (by video) this is the shooting on Christmas eve when Elle Edwards was killed,he is also charged with 2 cases of attempted murder,3 cases of gbh and possesion of a weapon and ammunition. Anyone who is reckless enough to fire a Skorpion machine pistol (or any automatic weapon) into a crowd should be looking at a very heavy sentence, perhaps more than the 42 years given out this week.....trial is in June. Update: A man has been charged with the murder of Elle Edwards, who was shot at a Merseyside pub on Christmas Eve. ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/240/cpsprodpb/0E58/production/_128127630_elleedwards-nc.jpgConnor Chapman, 22, of Houghton Road, Woodchurch, has been remanded in custody and will appear in court later. He is also charged with two counts of attempted murder and three counts of unlawful and malicious wounding with intent to do grievous bodily harm. Ms Edwards, a 26-year-old beautician, was shot in the head at the Lighthouse Pub in Wallasey Village on 24 December. Mr Chapman has also been charged with possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life, possession of ammunition with intent to endanger life and handling stolen goods, namely a Mercedes A Class, Merseyside Police said. He is set to appear at Wirral Adult Remand Court on Friday. A 23-year-old woman arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender has been released on bail. Police are still appealing for witnesses and urged anyone with information to contact them. The court case has been going on this week, the jury were shown a Skorpion machine pistol by a firearms expert,he described how fast a magazine can be fired on full auto, some videos online and it is ridiculous (but sadly not surprising) that some berk was reckless enough to fire a weapon like this into a crowd.

Matiu Ratana: Man guilty of murdering Met Police sergeant..ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/490/cpsprodpb/3C5A/production/_130005451_01h27mr3kad660bxrcnt5jqs2k.jpgA man has been found guilty of murdering a Met Police sergeant by shooting him in the chest with an antique gun he had smuggled into a south London custody centre. Sgt Matiu Ratana, 54, died of a chest wound after being hit by two bullets at Croydon's Windmill Road custody block on 25 September 2020. Louis De Zoysa, 25 and from Surrey, had claimed diminished responsibility. But a jury at Northampton Crown Court ruled he had acted deliberately. He will be sentenced on 27th July. During the three-week trial, the jury was shown distressing video footage of the New Zealand-born sergeant being hit by the first of three shots discharged by De Zoysa. A second bullet struck him in his thigh before De Zoysa was wrestled to the ground by other officers. Sgt Ratana, who was known as Matt, died of his injuries in hospital. Speaking outside the court, Sgt Ratana's partner Su Bushby said: "Today is about justice for Matt. "His life was taken too soon in the line of duty doing a job that he loved - a cruel end to a lifetime of service and dedication protecting others." She said although the trial was now over, "the constant feeling of grief and loss continues". "My love for Matt, my gentle giant, will never end. He will never be forgotten."

Connor Chapman found guilty of murdering Elle Edwards. Elle's father praised the Police saying that many officers had volunteered to work over Christmas to bring the killer to justice.
Sentencing is tomorrow, got a feeling that Chapman will be a very old man before he gets out of prison.

Deadly shooting in Auckland hours before Women's World Cup..By Emily McGarvey, BBC News.ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/490/cpsprodpb/B917/production/_130438374_c7020f8f4144f87842ad4d3b4b18017c7dfb35cc0_0_6720_37801000x563.jpgA shooting has left two people dead at a construction site in the central business district of Auckland, New Zealand, police say. At least four other people are thought to have been injured and the gunman is also dead after the incident which came at 07:22 (19:22 GMT). Mayor Wayne Brown said it was a "dreadful thing to happen" in his city. The shooting happened hours before the city is due to host the Fifa Women's World Cup opening match. All Fifa personnel and football teams are safe and have been accounted for, the mayor said. Police say the incident on Queen Street has been contained. Earlier, the mayor warned people should stay home and avoid travelling into the city. The opening match is to be held between New Zealand and Norway in the city's Eden Park. Police say they heard reports of a person discharging a firearm inside the construction site, and the gunman moved through the building and continued to fire. The man then went into a lift shaft and police attempted to engage with him. Further shots were fired by the man and he was found dead a short time later, police say. They add that the incident is not viewed as a national security risk.

She said although the trial was now over, "the constant feeling of grief and loss continues". "My love for Matt, my gentle giant, will never end. He will never be forgotten." Update Today: Sgt Matiu Ratana shooting: Killer Louis De Zoysa will never be freed...By Harry Low & Daniel Sandford, BBC News.A man has been been sentenced to a whole-life prison term for murdering Met Police sergeant Matiu Ratana. Sgt Ratana, 54, was shot in the chest and leg at Croydon custody centre by Louis De Zoysa, who had smuggled an antique gun into the building following his arrest on 25 September 2020. He was found guilty of murder, having claimed diminished responsibility. Sgt Ratana's partner Su Bushby said her grief was "tormenting" and spoke of an "intense" feeling of emptiness. De Zoysa, 26, of Banstead, Surrey, shot himself after the attack and was left with brain damage. The defendant, who communicated in court using a whiteboard, remained impassive as the whole-life order was handed down. Sentencing at Northampton Crown Court, Mr Justice Jeremy Johnson said De Zoysa's autism and the impact on his family were not sufficient mitigating factors for a lesser term. He said: "You acted in cold blood. You intended to kill Sgt Ratana. You aimed the gun at his chest at near point-blank range. "Even as he fell you re-aimed and fired a second shot at him. The aggravating factors outweigh the mitigating factors." De Zoysa, who will serve his sentence at Belmarsh prison, becomes the 65th person in jail in England and Wales under a whole-life order

Jacksonville shooting: Racist gunman kills three black people in Florida store..By Alex Binley, BBC News.A gunman killed three black people in a racially motivated attack then killed himself in Jacksonville, Florida, the city's sheriff said. The man, described as white and in his early 20s, entered a Dollar General store (below) and opened fire, triggering a standoff with police. i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2023/08/26/23/74756231-12449101-The_gunman_was_initially_said_to_have_barricaded_himself_inside_-a-31_1693089514373.jpgThe gunman was initially said to have barricaded himself inside the store and later died from a self-inflicted gun woundSheriff T K Waters said two men and a woman were killed by the gunman, who wore body armour and left manifestos. Mayor Donna Deegan (below) said it was a "hate-filled crime" driven by racist hatred. i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2023/08/26/23/74756599-12449101-Jacksonville_Mayor_Donna_Deegan_pictured_confirmed_there_are_a_n-a-34_1693089514431.jpgThe sheriff said the shooter - who has not yet been officially named - carried a lightweight semi-automatic rifle and a handgun. He is believed to have acted alone and allegedly wanted to kill himself. He lived in Jacksonville's Clay County with his parents and left several messages about his intentions, Sheriff Waters said, including one to his parents and another to the media. The sheriff added that at least one of the guns had a swastika drawn on it. The FBI has opened a civil rights investigation into the shooting, which it is treating as a hate crime. The attack happened less than a mile from the historically black Edwards Waters University. Jacksonville Mayor Donna Deegan told local TV channel WJXT: "One shooting is too much but these mass shootings are really hard to take." Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (below) called the gunman a "scumbag" and described the shooting as "horrific". i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2023/08/27/00/74759077-12449101-image-a-21_1693092284670.jpg"He [the gunman] was targeting people based on their race, that is totally unacceptable," said Mr DeSantis, who is competing to be the Republican party's presidential candidate. "This guy killed himself rather than face the music and accept responsibility for his actions and so he took the coward's way out." The White House said President Joe Biden had been briefed on the shooting. In a statement provided to the BBC's US partner, CBS News, Dollar General said it was "heartbroken by the senseless act of violence that occurred at our Kings Road store", adding that "supporting our Jacksonville employees and the DG family impacted by this tragedy is a top priority as we work closely with law enforcement". There have been over 28,000 gun deaths in the US so far this year, according to the Gun Violence Archive website. The Jacksonville attack comes on the 60th anniversary of the March on Washington and Martin Luther King Jr's famous "I have a dream" speech. Tens of thousands of people gathered in the capital on Saturday to mark the historic milestone in the civil rights movement. i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2023/08/27/04/74759639-12449101-It_was_a_racist_attack_and_the_gunman_used_an_assault_rifle_cove-m-35_1693105327049.jpgIt was a racist attack and the gunman used an assault rifle covered in Nazi swastikas
