This was a different game with the organisation and the belief in the organsiation. They're a good side, we know that. The commitment from us had to be there. The energy of the side and also the key moments. "I thought [Dominic Calvert-Lewin] was outstanding tonight. We've been trying to get him back to where he needs to be and I thought he was outstanding. He gets a goal. He tried to get it over the line and I love that. The second one is a great header. No, I thought he was outstanding tonight. "Jordan Pickford made some big saves in the first half. It's rare you stop these sides having chances so you need moments youself. It's hard to pick out one or two. "We spoke about the desire and the energy of the team adn the physical side of the game. The lads did it on Sunday and they'll have to do it again. That's the challenege. "We stayed focussed tonight and I asked if they could stay with us and they did. Sunday was massive and now it was a massively important derby game. For people like Seamus Coleman, he wears his heart on his sleeve and he's so happy. "We should be on 41 points and the story's different. Three clean sheets in three home games. The challenge for the players is to go and do it again." ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/4/24/704ae035-0988-4a76-8fa7-8b870699d306.pngEverton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, speaking to Sky Sports: "Thoroughly deserved. A massive win not for the rivalry, but in the league as we keep pushing - hard work pays off." On matching Liverpool: "You have to to. You have to put the hard yards in and Dominic [Calvert-Lewin] was grafting up there on himself and gets rewarded with a goal." On the league: "We cannot ease off we have to recover for Saturday for another big game. Delighted and it pushes us even further up the table now. "I enjoyed it, the mental side takes it out of you and it's a great win for the fans and club." ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/4/24/b07907a3-10ea-4005-9bca-8134775f74d7.pngEverton forward Dominic Calvert-Lewin, speaking to Sky Sports. On what it means to Everton's main forward: "Everything. "Everything I have worked for and it is where I want to be - pressure is a privilege, It's my responsibility to carry that. "It is extra special local derby I have been here long enough to know what it means to the fans. "Where we are in the league it is a massive three points everything come together tonight. "It was electric and I felt it at the end. It was extra special to do that on a nigh like this is a great memory - something we will look to kick on from."

"Firstly, the literal performance, which was very good. The tactical side of the game, which is always a wonder to a manager and coaches; have we got it right? Can we deliver it? And they did. "Lot of respect for Liverpool for the things they are trying to achieve and the things they have done, but I though it was a good performance and we deserved to win. "And then when you add in the fans in the stadium, which I though was terrific - and I thought was same against [Nottingham] Forest as well - and I thanked the fans for that, because the ugly performances, the ugly outcomes, we all took a bit of heat for that, but we held our hands up, stayed connected to the team; I thought that was on show against Forest and it was certainly on show against last night. "It was a win on all levels, not just three points." Everton boss Sean Dyche on Premier League safety now being in the club's own hands: "Well, it certainly says we're sticking to task, whatever comes at us - I'm certainly proud of that, because we've had some ups and downs ourselves. "I think the challenge has been fromt outside, with the points [deductions], and I think everyone agrees with that. I said to the players immediately after last night... they've got to enjoy it. It means a lot to the fans in this locality - and to me, of course. "But it has to be parked because another one is coming around. Another important game, another chance, another opportunity to play at Goodison and get three points, so there is a lot on the next game. So they do have to have a window to enjoy that last night."

ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/b34c/live/fe2732d0-fcc6-11ee-97f7-e98b193ef1b8.jpgWe asked for your views on Everton's 2-0 win over Liverpool on Wednesday.
Here are some of your answers:
Chris: Total commitment by every player on the pitch. That kind of performance is what the fans love to see. Appreciate it can not be like that every game due to depth of squad, but performances against Chelsea are not expected either. Superb heart and spirit - and even some skill. Well done the Blues. John: Everton produced an outstanding team performance with every player devoting themselves to the team cause. Especially impressive was the quality of the defence again with each player making important contributions. Going forward they put Liverpool under pressure on both the first and second phase ball. Finally, the fans were brilliant throughout. Anton: Wow. But now the euphoria has died down, this rousing victory actually leaves more questions than answers. The lads to a man were incredible but where has this performance been most of the season? Are these players stuck in the cycle of "end of season escape heroes"? Either way, if we stay up, Dyche has to be manager of the year. John: Looked a completely different team from the Nottingham Forest game, but with the same result! Jordan Pickford silenced any doubters and Everton got a break they richly deserved. Alan: Everton gave a perfect performance in all areas. The dogs of war were back as their midfield hustled Liverpool out of there stride. The crowd played their part in lifting the players as Everton won the league for Arsenal or Manchester City and secured safety for themselves in a merited win. Pete: Derby games, and under the lights at Goodison, are always going to be special and rarely follow form book or league positions. We dared to dream and played as a 12th man. Everton just ran at them and off the ball ,they regrouped quickly into shape. Liverpool were frustrated, particularly Van Dijk, and it spoiled them. ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/f4e3/live/7292ec30-02cc-11ef-8369-47dc4454b972.jpg

Saturday 27th April 2024 - Premier League
Everton 1 (Gueye 60) Brentford 0
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/976/cpsprodpb/FF0D/production/_133239256_everton-index2.jpg Idrissa Gueye has scored three Premier League goals in a season for the first time in his career
Report By Shamoon Hafez, BBC Sport football news reporter at Goodison Park.In-form Everton guaranteed their Premier League survival with three games to spare by edging to victory over lacklustre Brentford. Sean Dyche's side benefited from Luton losing at Wolves earlier on Saturday, and this result at Goodison Park allowed Everton to leapfrog Brentford into 15th place - 11 points clear of the relegation zone. Idrissa Gueye was the surprise match winner, smashing home a first-time finish into the top corner on the hour mark after reacting quickest to Brentford's defenders failing to clear the ball. A first half severely lacking in quality was summed up by neither side being able to find a shot on target. Home midfielder Abdoulaye Doucoure should have done better with a volley which he screwed wide from 10 yards. The contest improved in the second period and Everton's England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford made an excellent stop to deny the returning Ivan Toney. At the other end, Everton were inches away from breaking the deadlock when Dwight McNeil's thunderous drive from long range rattled the crossbar, before Gueye's goal ensured the Blues maintained their proud top-flight status. ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/b58c/live/4bb5dc20-04c6-11ef-b272-c3bebd1fc726.jpgEverton 1-0 Brentford: What Sean Dyche said: ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/976/cpsprodpb/58d8/live/744851e0-04d0-11ef-a1ae-79607411f81c.jpg.webp Everton boss Sean Dyche has been speaking to BBC Sport after securing the Toffees' Premier League status for another year: “Incredibly pleased and proud. They are a group of players who have had knocks all season. "Four out of five clean sheets and wins, with all the mounting noise after the Chelsea game, is incredible. The mentality of the players is fantastic. I'm super pleased and very proud. "It has been an exhausting week for many reasons, with highs from the big win on Wednesday. The emotion that goes into that, I wondered how the players would respond. "With our xG, we have been questioned about how many times we haven’t won games. It has paid us back [now]. "They [the players] have had a massive week. There is a lot of pressure and intensity on the week and [whether] you can do it again. In the second half, we controlled the game pretty well.” On the fact that Everton are mathematically safe from relegation now: "Yeah, of course, that old chestnut - 'You were safe and all that'. "You were all desperate for Luton to win and for us to lose - this isn't my first rodeo."

ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/d59a/live/a219e660-fcc4-11ee-8369-47dc4454b972.jpgWe asked for your views on Saturday's match between Everton and Brentford.
Here are some of your answers:
Everton fans
Lee: It wasn't a good game to watch, but it was what we needed to carry on in the Premier League. There needs to be a massive change in our identity as a team next season. If we keep the same squad and management, the same things will happen! We need a clean slate and new quality personnel. Lucy: It wasn't the most beautiful game of football that I've ever witnessed from these boys, but I don't believe that is the most important aspect of our play at the moment. It's clear that all members of the team hold passion for our club and it makes me proud to be a member. Onwards and upwards I say - let the deductions spur us on. Michael: We were great in defence. The need for a quality midfield and a couple of forwards is obvious. Jack Harrison is lacklustre at times and he seems to lack confidence. It's not just him, 19-year-old Youssef Chermiti needs a lot more experience as well. He makes mistakes and holds back too much. There are a couple of players that are like puppets with uncoordinated legs. Mike: To achieve safety with three games to go, with a points deduction and this squad, is some feat. Dyche deserves immense credit because quite often the bench consists of two goalkeepers and two untried youngsters. Add to that the injuries and I doubt many managers could hold it together under the pressures he has had to deal with. He has earned the right to take us forward! ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/4/27/cd7c6eab-44c9-489e-b652-daee998fb422.jpg

ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/213a/live/65fbb6d0-0620-11ef-b9d8-4f52aebe147d.jpgBBC Sport's chief football news reporter Simon Stone has been answering your questions. Alex asked: With Sean Dyche being lauded for keeping Everton in the Premier League with three games too spare, is his job now safe? Everton have been awful for the majority of the season and the last three home games have glossed over another dire campaign. Board and FFP uncertainty mean he will probably stay but with supporters calling for his head two weeks ago, is it time for the club to be brave and try something new? Simon replied: I don’t see anything changing on Sean Dyche until the club’s ownership situation is resolved Alex. Even if they had lost every game, who would make the decision on Dyche and where would the money come from the pay his compensation? The Premier League are yet to sign off the 777 Partners deal, which clearly is a worry. Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s co-ownership of Manchester United was put to them after the Everton deal and has already been signed off. It is stating the obvious to say the Premier League need to be absolutely certain there are no issues looming with any new owner. But until Everton have one, further problems will hang over the club. I hope it gets sorted properly. Everton are one of England’s great names and their fans have shown huge loyalty. But other, better run, clubs have moved ahead of them and even with a new stadium, it is a long way back to the position they used to enjoy. ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/ddee/live/0a9395f0-f023-11ee-9810-cb18e38f0023.jpg

They put the pressure on with a lot of long and diagonal balls - there's nothing wrong with that by the way. Overall we dealt with that pretty well, though they did score a goal from that. "Another day, I know there's a lot of news and noise recently about penalties, but I'm amazed we didn't have another one. "The one on Dwight McNeil, I've seen it back and his foot has clearly gone on top of Dwight's foot. That one, from the penalties I've seen this season, I'm very surprised they've not given that. "Everybody is talking about minimal contact, I know there's a lot of noise for other clubs, but that's the third one we've had this season. If they stand on your foot, how can you run? If your foot is in the air and you're tapped, I can understand that. But if they stand on your foot, it's probably going to bring you down. "I thought we were a bit off it, not on the beach by the way. But the quality of the play and the demand of winning just softened a little. "We're playing against a team who are fighting for their lives and fair play to them. Nobody gave them a chance at the start of the season." Everton boss Sean Dyche, speaking to Sky Sports: "We were off first half and not much better in the second half, credit Luton for that. We want to go on to win more games. We moved forward with our resiliance, They bombarded us and we dealt with it." On performance: "It's hard for me to measure games like this, because some of the younger players are carrying a big season. I ask a lot of them and tonight we looked a bit off but credit to Luton, they made it really tough tonight. I'm not going to over question but there's been a lot of good signs." On one loss in seven: "There's a lot of work to be done. The balance of the club is quite obvious. The team and mentality has moved forward. We are doing all the hard yards." On his role: "The goalposts moved significantly from the job I got offered to the job I have now but we'll see moving forward."
Report By Phil McNulty, Chief football writer at Kenilworth Road.Luton Town missed the chance to move out of the Premier League's relegation places as they were held to a draw against Everton at Kenilworth Road. Everton, safe from the drop before kick-off, went ahead from the penalty spot after 24 minutes. Dominic Calvert-Lewin coolly converted after Luton defender Teden Mengi was penalised for hauling down Jarrad Branthwaite following an intervention from the video assistant referee. Elijah Adebayo showed exactly what Luton have been missing as the striker marked his first start since early February with the equaliser seven minutes later, the big forward proving too strong for Ashley Young before shooting low past Jordan Pickford. Both sides had opportunities after the break with Luton keeper Thomas Kaminski saving well from Jack Harrison's deflected shot and Calvert-Lewin's header but the stalemate was not broken. The draw leaves Rob Edwards' side in the bottom three, level on points with Nottingham Forest but having played a game more. ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/976/cpsprodpb/9AAC/production/_133269593_gettyimages-2150734388.jpg

Everton takeover uncertainty reaching boiling point..by Shamoon Hafez, BBC Sport football news reporter.ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/f5e2/live/27c46100-0e18-11ef-b9eb-dbbc39eb6212.jpgSean Dyche entered the news conference room on Thursday wiping his brow and commenting how hot it was, perhaps indicating how hard he is still working his players in training despite securing Premier League survival. But it's off the pitch were developments are reaching boiling point for Everton, with suggestions that the protracted takeover by 777 Partners is close to collapsing. Dyche admitted there is "a lot going on" and the uncertainty of that is making it difficult to plan for next season. He had to navigate the free and loans market last summer, so will there be money to spend this time if the takeover situation is resolved? Fans have been questioning whether prized asset Jarrad Branthwaite will be sold so the club don't fall foul of Profit and Sustainability rules once again. Will internationals such as Jordan Pickford and Amadou Onana remain at the club? Dyche has been dealt a particularly difficult hand and so it may have been a surprise he wasn't on the shortlist for the Premier League's manager of the year award. The boss said he doesn't "need an award", adding: "I know my self-reward as a manager from that job and playing my part in how it's come about to get it done. I've been really pleased with that." Having achieved safety despite being docked eight points for breaching financial rules on a shoe-string budget, Dyche perhaps deserves more than just an award for the job he has done at Everton so far. ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/a0d5/live/56240010-0de0-11ef-b6b8-e3a5dc2a8aa2.jpgEverton boss Sean Dyche has been speaking about ongoing issues around the club's takeover by 777 Partners. "There's a lot going on at this club," he stressed. "New ground, the complexities of the finances have become obvious, staying in the division has been achieved. There's a lot of detail goes into buying this club and that will take some time. "It's the shifting sands of this football club. You want to put a base in and it's not quite there yet." Dyche said things are "more tricky" on the transfer side and that things are "very difficult" in terms of planning while the club's ownership remains uncertain. Sean Dyche spoke to the media on Thursday and discussed the future of captain Seamus Coleman with the 35-year-old's contract due to expire in the summer. "He's made it clear at this stage his mindset is to keep playing," says Dyche. ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/9079/live/8fd66bf0-0de9-11ef-9769-838acb24f160.jpg

Everton owner Farhad Moshiri is to pull the plug on a takeover deal with 777 Partners by the end of this week, after holding new crisis talks with the group. Meanwhile, US firm MSP Sports Capital, who showed an interest in buying Tottenham last year, are said to be waiting in the wings with a bid for the Toffees if the 777 Partners deal collapses.

Sean Dyche named April manger of the month..ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/4e3d/live/78aea020-0ebe-11ef-b9d8-4f52aebe147d.jpgEverton boss Sean Dyche has been named the Premier League's manager of the month for April. The Blues took 13 points of a possible 18 and recorded four consecutive wins at home – without conceding a goal – that secured their survival in the top flight. One of those wins was over Liverpool in the Merseyside derby. Dyche, who has now won this award three times in career, becomes the first Toffees manager to receive the award since Carlo Ancelotti back in September 2020. "I’m very pleased," he said. "Obviously on behalf of firstly myself, but of my staff and the players, and the fans who have played their part. "It was a really good run and a very pleasing and a tough month of fixtures. "The derby win is the one that stands out, without a doubt."

Sean Dyche spoke to BBC Match of the Day after Everton's victory against Sheffield United: "Satisfied with the win to be honest. It was a strange game really, thought we were pretty decent in the second half but it kind of fizzled out really. Another clean sheet and another win, that has been an important factor this season - clean sheets and finding goals when it matters. On winning the final home game of the campaign: "The fans have earned the right to enjoy it, not just the team. The fans have joined in with the team and stuck by us during difficult times this season, not only on the pitch but off it at times too. And they are still there. It was nice for the players to be able to do a lap at the end there to show their appreciation. The last couple of seasons have been so fraught. All that went on it is nice to get the job done early doors and the players can enjoy it. They have deserved it too. On Dominic Calvert-Lewin's assist for the winner: "Very pleased, very pleased. Dom has worked very hard again today, finds an assist and Douc is on the spot. Some nice moments in the pockets but we couldn't find that next chance for another goal. Overall I am pleased with the win and us showing that winning mentality. On not finding the second goal: "Yeah sure, but credit to them [Sheffield United], they are fighting for their pride now and they did. It was hard to break down their defensive shape at times but we did find ways and chances. At the end of the day the players have put a lot of effort into the season so I'm not going to question too much today, it's another win. On the Calvert-Lewin and Jack Robinson incident: "The officials' performance was interesting today I thought. I don't know what the rules suggest but when the game is going on and their player does that [pushes Calvert-Lewin in the chest] I would suggest that is it unusual. They said it wasn't a push in the face so it's acceptable. I don't think that we would like to think that is acceptable across football at large. But anyways that's how it is in the modern game and I am learning about it and the officials every week."

Here are some of your answers:
Everton fans
Jason: Our form of late has been top-of-the-league stuff. Five home wins, two away draws and one loss is top-notch stuff in the circumstances and a big improvement on last year. I think the point deductions really hurt us and sucked us into a relegation fight we didn't belong in. Mark: A better end to the season than the lpst few. It's great to be safe with a few games to go. If not for the eight points deduction, we would be in comfortable mid-table obscurity. The ongoing financial situation is a worry and it's hard to see better things for next season. We need a fairy godmother! Nubi: I thought that our performance was both good in parts, but also disjointed. I was pleased that we didn't go for lumping the ball up the field, and many chances came from balls laid into the penalty area on the ground. And Dom [Calvert-Lewin] operating both centrally and down the channels was a joy to watch. Thank you guys for your hard work this season. Neil: To say teams who are safe are on the beach, I thought we did OK. Strong performance but again overshadowed by off-field uncertainties. Paul: Overall pleased to sign off at home with a win, albeit a quite unmemorable one against poor opponents. Forty points (+8) is an improvement on last season. Sean Dyche has done an amazing job under the circumstances.

@win_n10 on asked "X": Given the furore that has surrounded 777 Partners since Farhad Moshiri first announced them as preferred bidder for Everton, is it surprising that he is yet to end this takeover and does this slow death suggest the Premier League Ownership And Directors Test is still not fit for purpose as even 777 cannot be disqualified? Phil answered: In some ways, it is not a surprise because Farhad Moshiri’s management of Everton has been so poor since he acquired control. With all the various issues surrounding 777, it is a surprise this has dragged on so long and surely this has to end soon. The giveaway is that the Premier League has clearly had major reservations for some time otherwise they would have signed this deal off. Only they can know why they have not stepped in already but it now looks like it will come to an end of its own accord. This is, of course, unless the unpredictable Moshiri decides otherwise. The Premier League would also say they have been careful to guard Everton’s interests in this particular case by not signing it off. There has been much news around 777 recently – and none of it good.

Victoria G asked: How highly do you rate the job Sean Dyche has done at Everton, making them safe with games to spare despite an eight-point deduction? Phil answered: Hello Victoria. Sean Dyche deserves huge credit for the job he has done at Everton with all the “noise” – his word not mine – around the club this season and also a dreadful run of form and results before things picked up really well at the end. Let’s be honest, Everton have been a tough watch at times this season but needs must and they would have been comfortably mid-table had they not had those points knocked off. What happens next? Well who knows because the takeover situation is dragging on, director of football Kevin Thelwell has admitted players must be sold – and Everton’s squad is thin as it is. It might be even tougher next time out.

Meanwhile, Sean Dyche is hopeful of exploring a deal to turn 27-year-old English winger Jack Harrison's loan from Leeds United into a permanent transfer. Manchester City are interested in Everton's 16-year-old academy goalkeeper Douglas Lukjanciks and could pay up to £10m for the England Under-17 international.

Report by Emma Smith, BBC Sport journalist.Arsenal missed out on a first Premier League title since 2004 despite beating Everton as Manchester City took the glory. To be crowned champions, the Gunners needed to beat the Toffees and hope City failed to win against West Ham. Arsenal suffered a setback when Idrissa Gueye's deflected free-kick put Everton in front, although Takehiro Tomiyasu equalised three minutes later. While Arsenal did eventually hold up their end of the bargain with Kai Havertz's late winner, ultimately City's victory over West Ham took matters out of their hands. Phil Foden's early double for City at Etihad Stadium effectively ended the lingering hopes Arsenal had of a first title in 20 years. The Gunners were further frustrated as Everton took the lead in north London despite the home side's dominance. After Thomas Partey fouled Dwight McNeil 25 yards out, Gueye's free-kick took a huge deflection off the forehead of Declan Rice and flew into the net past the wrong-footed David Raya. Arsenal responded quickly, Tomiyasu equalising with a fine low finish from the edge of the area following a pull-back from Martin Odegaard. Havertz and Emile Smith Rowe both struck the woodwork in the second half, as belief visibly drained at the end of a long, losing battle for silverware. Arsenal did find the winner, however, although it came in controversial circumstances. After Havertz tucked the ball in from close range, the video assistant referee recommended that the goal should be disallowed for a Gabriel Jesus handball in the build-up. But after reviewing the footage at the side of the pitch, referee Michael Oliver allowed the goal.

ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/7621/live/8ef9e870-fa7e-11ee-8369-47dc4454b972.jpgWe asked for your opinions on the Premier League fixture between Arsenal and Everton.
Here are some of the best responses:
Everton fans
Ifan: Proud of our team! We played well, but Arsenal were hungry for the win. To take the lead and then hold Arsenal for 88 minutes, at their ground, is an achievement. To finish 15th on 40 points, 48 points without points deductions, has made for a relaxing end to the season for us Evertonians. Thank you, Sean Dyche! Roll on 2024-25 season! Chris: An against the run of play lead, but there was hope that we could've held on for a point. Without the points deduction, a respectable mid-table finish would've been ours and it would've been our best season in four years. Well done to Sean Dyche and the players. Next season may be harder - we could have a nine point deduction to contend with. C'est la vie! David: Well done to Everton over the past few weeks for surviving relegation. Today's performance was typical of our fighting spirit over the latter part of the season. If not for those eight points deducted, we would've finished 12th overall and that is great credit to Dyche, his staff and the players. Enjoy the summer Evertonians everywhere! John: I'm looking forward to next season when all of our players will be fit. With a brilliant manager in Sean Dyche, we will be looking for a top-half finish. ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/fade/live/8865d8b0-1677-11ef-988c-716ec7fb94cb.jpg
