An emphatic or pathetic display from two teams on show this morning Somerset fail miserably with the bat..all out for 109!! Or Essex bowl brilliantly to dismiss Somerset for 109.....🤔 Probably the underlined comment, 3 Essex bowlers took 3 each so the wickets were well spread around and Cook & Browne will knock off at least the 109 that Somerset got. Alastair Cook (Gloucester born on Xmas Day 1984) has been in good form so far this season, making his 70th 1st class 100 on the opening day, boy could we do with him now for England. Somerset were well and truly beaten by Hampshire and a repeat could be on the cards v Essex, they have a torrid season ahead.

Or Essex bowl brilliantly to dismiss Somerset for 109.....🤔 A complete imitation of last week before lunch. Essex bowled well but just a good line and length. Well done to Tom Lammonby, he batted well. A different team to last week and it showed when we bowled, Siddle, Overton and Gregory all bowled very well and were unlucky not to get a few more wickets. Sir Alistair was lucky to survive, sat behind the bowlers arm we thought he was out for an LBW appeal but he’s still there and he’ll probably get his century tomorrow as Essex get over 300!

That was the most exciting 2 hours session of cricket I've seen for a long time. The crowd were getting excited and it was a wonderful advert for red ball cricket. When Sir Alistair went to make it 4-3 I thought this will be interesting and then when it was 4-4 and then 28-6 and 60-8 I thought we might do it. Great bowling from Overton and Siddle but a determined little innings form Rossington saw Essex over the line, just. Nerve racking to the end!

James Bracey, 177 today against Yorkshire. Is he back in contention for an England spot based on the sheer amount of runs he is making?

Well with Rob Key being made Managing Director the first step back has been taken. Expect a coach, albeit an interim one to be appointed before a new squad is selected for the June (?) Test matches. All Bracey and others can do is keep scoring runs. Lots of runs around in the first two rounds but the trouble is, as it ever is, is can these players who score heavily in Championship matches step up to Test level. Good luck to James Bracey.

Some respectability in the Somerset innings at last, Abell with an excellent 150 no, good to see several good stands co-ordinated, and a decent 337 innings total, and a good start with the ball with Surrey at one time 48-3 eventually getting to the close at 204-5 with Pope,Foakes and S Curran getting decent knocks in to hold you the Somerset attack, a nice blustery day won't go down too well with either batter or bowler this morning I wouldn't have thought
Somerset gain a small first innings lead of 29, S Curran being the mainstay of the Surrey innings with a knock of 80, and ironically it is J Overton as the last man standing

Blimey, Somerset scores over 300 and look up for a score in excess of 400 tomorrow. Watched it on the streaming service today but going to watch tomorrow and Saturday. Looking forward to it. Renshaw made a faultless century, it was excellent to watch. I thought at midday that Gloucestershire were doing their normal by making life difficult for Surrey! Strange that Gloucestershire seem to do well against Surrey but it looked a bit different at tea.

You must have enjoyed that, a WIN!! And in good style, puts a smile on the faces again 😊 It was a cracking day’s cricket if you’re a Somerset supporter. All the wickets shared around. There was a fantastic lively atmosphere in the ground and in the afternoon session when Warwickshire put a good stand together the players started clapping as Brooks ran in, then the crowd joined in and by the time he bowled it was loud and the ball earned a wicket and the ground went mad. Then two balls later he took another one. I’ve not seen or heard an atmosphere like that at a County Championship game before! You wouldn’t have got an atmosphere like that at anywhere else in county cricket. It was like the atmosphere of a 20/20 match, brilliant. A good day to watch cricket.

171-0. Gloucestershire won the toss and put Somerset in. Long way to go but not looking the best decision! Second consecutive opening stand of 100+ after about 50 years without one.

Both openers gone now. Glos have got three loanees in their side today. Chappell and Wheal are good additions (all be it, the later has looked a bit rusty today) but I am always wary of bringing players in for one game. They've been really unlucky with injuries. Payne, Dent and Nassem Shah are especially big absentees. Without Payne and Shah (and now Amir) our bowling attack has been a bit toothless. On the plus side, even though Glos have been behind the curve in every game, they've remained competitive and haven't folded.
I am going on Saturday. I'm hoping this pitch isn't as flat as the one we played Surrey on!
The team Somerset have picked looks a good one to me. Top order are finding a bit of form and Gregory, Overton and Davy have all missed parts of the season and I guess they will be close to peaking. Somerset look a much stronger team when those three are in it, although I do think they miss a genuinely quick bowler. Marchant de Lange hasn't really had an impact with the red ball.
