It’s strange nine years on and a thread is reactived. I remember Claude and Derek at the time, when I used to frequent the ‘Kenny’ in Redland -I recall. Claude was the quieter one and smaller wheaas Derek was as tall as me and had an infectious laugh. Another memory from those days me and another mate used to drink in a ‘ci#y’ pub just up from Bridewell Nick - the bar was accessible via stairs to first floor. It was a lively ol place and it sold Breakers which was a very strong lager. Thinking back now it was well known as a ‘ci#y’haunt and yet although quite a few knew (it rhymes!) I was gas I was never made to feel uncomfortable. In fact one night in particular illustrates that; MJ (no not Michael Jackson), was taking the shortish route to a confrontation armed with a knife climbing over tables knocking the odd beer over on the way, and (unbelievable Jeff) apologised to us when accessing our table.. Very funny times indeed! The Wheatsheaf?

Sad news. One of the many reasons the Conference season was so enjoyable for me , was travelling to pretty much every away game with Allan, Dido and occasionally Basel. We would often try to get in a cultural stop, seeing the Iron Bridge when going to Telford , Anthony Gormley's 'Another Place' en route to Southport- where we managed to find a pub that served beer so bad , that not even Allan could drink it Allan constitution was incredible! When first introduced to him by Dido, I was told he was a 'Four pasty' man. I didn't really get that at first , until I realised that he - literally- would buy four burger, hot dogs , pasties, or whatever fayre was on offer at whichever particular ground we were travelling to. It was me who did the driving 99% of the time, except for one memorable occasion when Allan drove to Eastleigh. Dido insisted on sitting in the back and it didn't take me long to realise why , I needed more than a few stiff whiskies to face the journey back home A very proud Bristolian, with a fair dinkum Aussie accent, I hadn't seen him since Covid I guess and I regret not making more of an effort to keep in touch. Four years to the day I lost another good mate in Brian Daly, I shall and do remember both very fondly.

I've been struggling to think about anything else since it became apparent Sladey didn't have long left in this world. 56 really is no age at all. I hadn't seen him in a while, the last time being a chance meeting in The Raglan, where I attempted to play him at darts and failing dismally, he was a VERY good darts player and I'm a VERY bad one. Although I knew him through Rovers, I probably really got to know him better, when our kids went to school together and his son James used to play against my lad Archie in junior football, where we both pretended the result didn't matter, but we were both desperate for our boys to win ! Any recent interaction between us , had really only been liking each others political Facebooks posts, there aren't many of us lefties left (jeez, we weren't really even 'lefties' but it seems now anything not to the right of Marie Antoinette attracts that term) and I was always glad of the moral support. Along with Rick, he was treated absolutely appallingly by some at Rovers and it was sad to see the club lose such stalwart fans. Often infuriatingly opinionated, but always warm hearted and a laugh, I shall be raising a glass to him at the first game of the season, Actually, f**k waiting till the first game, I'm working in the delightful village of Berriew, there's a pub next door, I'll go and raise one now! Cheers Sladey!

Barry Bennell is 66 years old and serving a 34 year sentence, I have no idea what Adam Johnson is up to, but I think his chances of landing a job in football are so negligible that they could be considered as zero. So to mention either name is just nonsensical. I'm sure there are plenty of former footballers convicted of crime (I can even think of one of own legendary players) but I'm generally of the opinion that once you have committed a crime and served your time, then you should return to society. If we don't have that sort of system, we may as well just hang everyone. Anyway, I am started to go off track a bit, but I cannot honestly think of anyone who could credibly get the Rovers job, that would lead me to withdraw my support. You present a totally contradictory argument. In March 2016, Johnson was found guilty of sexual activity with a child and sentenced to six years in prison. He was released in 2019 after serving half his sentence. He has served his time. He has returned to society. Why are his chances of landing a job in football negligible? Answer that question. Okay you win.

I'm not sure you HAVE TO draw a line, I can't think of anyone whatsoever who- if they became Rovers manager- would stop me going. There are plenty of people in football I'm not fond of, but I cannot think of one who would make me think 'I'm done'. OK. Each to their own. The appointment of Mr B***** crossed a line with me and led to me removing my active support. But if you're OK with Mr B*****, that's your decision. Fine by me. But to be a clear - you're saying that you would still actively support Bristol Rovers if (say) Adam Johnson or Barry Bennell were installed as manager. Seriously? Barry Bennell is 66 years old and serving a 34 year sentence, I have no idea what Adam Johnson is up to, but I think his chances of landing a job in football are so negligible that they could be considered as zero. Brilliant stuff. Interesting to see how this will be twisted to be somehow bad news. Meh, I like to think I'm a positive person, but doing well on a survey doesn't do it for me I'm afraid.

There were membership options, but I'm talking about the options you had to pick on your season ticket, maybe in your rush to get back onto XHamster you didn't realise which options you were selecting. No digital pass option for me. Maybe they offered you that, as you're rarely at BRFC games, what with racing and looking for Terry Munroe in Glesca. As for the other bit, I'm not even Googling that. 😁 No need if it's saved to favourites. And I'm pretty sure there was a digital pass option for you.

I'm confused- I thought I was ordering a season card, but when I go to complete the purchase there are 2 options. Season card & digital pass for an extra £2.50 or just a digital pass for no extra fee. Does that mean I have to buy a digital pass -I guess that's for I follow stuff- if I want a season ticket? Any straight answer would be appreciated Just ordered mine and none of that. There was an option for a Gold Membership on top of the season card, which I ignored. A bit of a faff, but all done and a good price - £300 for the West Terrace, away from you riff raff. I'm not going down this Childish game... Would much rather have a proper football debate. What you do know is I'm willing to give JB my support, both from a football standpoint and in the hope he has learned from his previous misdemeanours. Time will tell who has made the right judgement. Apologies. I don't think it's childish. At some point you have to draw a line. I was curious where your line was drawn. I'm not sure you HAVE TO draw a line, I can't think of anyone whatsoever who- if they became Rovers manager- would stop me going. I better pay the extra then , I'm still not comfortable with a lot of phone things. I wonder if we still have the turnstiles, where the bloke still has to push the pedal after the beep, I found that rather quaint

I struggle to feel any sympathy toward Premier league fans saying 'they want their club back'. Come August they will be moaning the board haven't made a gazillion pound bid for the latest superstar and accuse them of lack of ambition for 'only' offering £100k a week to hold onto whoever their current darling is.

A conspiracy theorist might conclude that this 15 game run under JB of mostly defeats and increasingly poor performances has been deliberate. As if to prove the point that "these are not my players. What can I do?" Hence the sulking on the touchline. Arms folded, sullen expression. T his - combined with the constant remarks like "if I had my way, we'd throw everyone out of the building" - naturally does NOTHING for morale. I don't think it's designed to either. Quite the opposite, in fact.
JB is using peculiar reverse psychology to divide and rule, hoping to lay the ground for his "great re-set" in the autumn. However, this feels to me more like a person who is first at the scene of a fire, eagerly helping the police and deploring the actions of those responsible - only to eventually themselves be revealed as the arsonist. An extreme form of narcissism. I mention all this because - as emperor has identified many times - we were completely overrun in midfield again yesterday and the game took on exactly the same pattern as every other recent one under JB. "what can you do with these players, eh?" Well, for one: stop shaming them in public and two: at least try to set up our tactical shape in some form that will allow us to be competitive in games. With this in mind, I also agree entirely with emperor that - assuming JB is manager come the new season - his tenure will not last long and won't end well. He's repeatedly told us that he "needs his own players". But will he back them in adversity or hang them out to dry too? Will he suddenly set us up to dominate midfield or will we keep chasing shadows? I'm sorry, but I predict a very rocky first dozen games of next season with mixed results and the final nail in the coffin being when he publicly turns on us fans. Echoes of Paul buckle, I'm afraid. The question then becomes: who next for manager?! I seem to remember when JB joined he was very supportive of the players, it was only when it became evident that he wasn't going to save us from the drop, that he turned on them. I'm neither pro nor anti JB, he happens to be the manager of a team I follow so I want him to succeed. However - I will say - and I think I mentioned it when he joined us- that when he joined Rangers he said all the right things, talked very well and certainly bigged himself up before a game with Celtic . Well I was at that game, he and Rangers were utterly humiliated 5-1 (I actually left the ground disappointed that it was only 5) and within a few weeks he had left after a 'training ground incident' and having not even made double figures in appearances. I'm not saying that's how it will end here and I honestly hope it doesn't, but I can't say I would be that shocked if it does pan out that way.

I'm not one for booing, I just don't see the point, but I think I may have had a bit of a rant at the final whistle if I was in the ground.

I'm amazed people are watching it tbh, surely no one would have paid a tenner though? Feel as a Gashead I want to support the team. Mad I know. If the stadium was open I would be there, but to watch it on TV? You must have it bad!

That’s very passive aggressive but there you go or, at best, a back handed compliment. The ball cocks but was in reply to the question, not the poster. "That’s very passive aggressive". Interesting irony there. As you say, it's how people read things. Just an observation, not a compliment. There's some rogues that the Masters Of False Mythology (Catholicism) have made Saints after all: Lucifer and Mother Bloody Theresa for example. Anyway, apologies again etc etc. I'm not sure we are masters of it, but we do like a good story

How you could take that as aggressively is beyond me. There is no aggressive nature in it all. I guess it’s just how each person reads it It was the "total ball cocks" bit. It appears you are a Saint though, so apologies for any confusion. 🙂 I didn't think it was aggressive either, you lanky streak of piss.
