It feels like it's a Catch 22 situation. If you have a player who is great, he will only sign a short term deal, knowing that he will get a free transfer and better wages by running down his contract. If you have a player who knows they are relatively sh*t, and they don't back themselves to find a Club at the end of the contract - they will sign a deal for as long as possible. Tom Nichols 3 year deal. Tom Lockyer 18 months deal. It's known as the Tom Paradox. QED. Also loyalty is a 2 way street. Lots of people who moan about players 'lack of loyalty' are often the same people who will start talking about how the club need to move or replace a player the moment it looks like they are on the decline or have a bad run of form.
If I was a player I'd probably have a fairly jaundiced view of 'loyalty' - clubs rarely show them any after all.

I believe lockyer, lines and sinclair are better players than many who are staying at the club.

One of the few players that could optimise another big pitch overhaul and playing surface now plays for Northampton !

By staying he was part of a defence that kept us up. How much is that worth? Was going to say the same thing. Say we'd sold him in January - how much could we have got for him? I've really no idea. £300K? £500K? All ifs, buts and maybes, but say he'd left in January and we ended up getting relegated - how much would that have cost us?

Bad form this, Gareth Taylor was out of contract knowing full well Crystal Palace we’re coming in for him, he signed a new contract to make sure the club got a fee for him. I'd no idea about Gareth Taylor signing a contract, but did know Lambo did something similar. The thing is Tom had already signed extensions to his contract (the previous one 18 months) and no one came in for him - how many more extensions do you expect him to sign? Rather than say "bad form" from Locks, the way I'd look at it is "exceptional form" from Taylor and Lambert.

Payne, matthews, mensah, nichols, reilly = deadwood for me. Bennett loaned out when the club were desperate for points and with only one wide player at the club. That's how highly he is rated by the manager. We have virtually a full squad at the club right now which is a desperate situation in my view.

Good point,im guessing the strategy will be "you wont get a game" and hope at least some of them want to actually play football. I was surprised at the number of players we have on 2 and 3 year deals who actually are poor players.

... this is true for Kyle Bennett:
Swindon Advertiser:
...But Wellens admits successfully negotiating a permanent deal with Bristol Rovers won’t be easy.
“Kyle (Bennett) is a difficult one,” admitted Wellens.
“His contract at Bristol Rovers is very good, it’s something that we can’t compete with....
Time for Cocko to put an arm around him, methinks, as in J C-H, and get the width he is looking for.
...Four goals in his 15 appearances in red were complemented by his ability to break up play in midfield and spark attacking phases of play.
Dressing room politics and relationships though...

Hiram Boateng has made a move to MK dons. Great player on his day although sadly that is only 1 game in 4. Could be playing much higher up if he could perform on a consistent basis.

Not sure he fits in with the title of this thread - certainly not one of our best players, in fact in the running for one of our worst!

Look, I'll agree he had a disappointing loan spell but he is far from being one of the worst players we have had. Just very inconsistent, I remember Oldham away he was by far the best player on the pitch but the problem was you'd hardly notice him in the next game.

my take on hiram boateng is that he is a very talented footballer who tended to be lazy and prone to lapses in concentration when he played for us. Maybe being released by palace and not being able to hold down a place at rovers forced him to get his act together? We should invite him to a few training sessions to show our midfield players how to pass the ball to your own players, something ollie clarke, upson, ogogo and matthews seemed unable to do last season.

We were down to 10 men and got battered 4-0. I thought Boatang took them on single-handed. I know he got criticized for some home performances, but there has to be a good player in there somewhere.

Judging by the accounts it looks like most of our better players are being released because of their high wages rather than lack of ability. It's all becoming a lot clearer now.
