Alas no, right idea though. It must be Glossop. Mmm... it's difficult to compare exact like with like. census 2001 Darwen 31,570 1911 40,000 census 2001 Glossop 32,820 1901 21,520 So Darwen is the answer based on current population. Probably. Glossop is the answer based on population at the turn of the last century. Probably.

Good one epping. Surprised that Accrington are higher than a couple. Before they went out of the league in 60s perhaps they had 3000-4000 at their old Peel Park. Certainly since they came back in haven’t had much more than 3000. UTG! Yes, that must be it. According to footballgroundguide.com, Stanley's average attendances for the last three seasons (all League two, including their promotion season) have been 1979, 1699, 1834. For GasMacc1 and any other stattos out there - On General Football Chat I added data comparing average attendances and average league positions... Good work, epping!
Before the UWE project sank, I had the idea of predicting the effect on Rovers' attendance that a new stadium might have. My method was to consider a number of clubs that have moved to new stadia. First, I would plot the sensitivity over the years of a club's attendance to League position in their old stadium - the steady state. Then, I would note the change in attendance (normally an increase) at those clubs after moving to a new stadium.
I suppose the analysis might be flawed in that it's impossible to separate whether an increase in attendance is driven by the stadium move or the not-unrelated massive financial boost to all aspects of a club (playing side, marketing, etc) that would also bring increased success.
I got part way through that analysis, swotting up on statistical methods, before things went pear-shaped at the Rovers end!

In a moment of excel based boredom... I was testing the theory that over time it's the average home attendance which tends to drive the 'natural' position in the league tables. Digging back to 1921 - it would appear the Gas have an average home league gate of 9,686. This ranks us (by my own calculations) as 52nd. The "ultimate 50 year table" from Sky ranks us as 55th. So pretty close correlation. (Though obviously different time periods, a serious statto would rip me to shreds). There are a lot of problems with the methodology though. A lot of the 'smaller' Clubs have a very potted history. I tended to ignore data from below tier 6 (though not always). Found some odd stuff. Ipswich were only elected to the league in 1938. Didn't know that. I ranked 114 Clubs based on the current top 5 divisions plus Conference N & S. Data from here: www.european-football-statistics.co.uk/englandcontent.htmAnyway - for stattos out there - here is the full list. Which is probably full of holes. ** Stop Press** 2nd on the list should be the sh*t with 11,579. Their average gate since they were established in 1982. The only positive I can take from us v 💩 is that their crowds were lower than ours, when then were in tier 4. They now have a clear run and we are not going to be anywhere close to them , barring a miracle or White Knight investor
