I see that Peter Aitken is to leave the club, and how I read it on the website, it appears to be with immediate effect.
I have got to know him pretty well over the years, and he is a great bloke, and Rovers through and through (We wont mention that dark period of his life).
It seems a bit of a sudden announcement, so I hope all is well, and all the best for the future,

Pete is a Bristol footballing legend. Debut for Rovers in 1972 and 234 appearances. The only player to captain both Rovers and City, and one of the Ashton Gate 8. However his blood runs blue and white, and he has given great service in recent years as Community Development Officer. I hope the club marks his 'retirement' in an appropriate way!

As a player I always thought he was one of Rovers unsung heros, always gave 100% and talented too.
Time is a healer and I can now bring myself to forgive him for his stint with the dark side.
Good luck Peter in your next adventures.

Great servant to the club conducted with professionalism and modesty.
Well done, Peter!
He scored 3 goals for us, anyone remember them?

Peter Aitken was a very cultured player, and certainly one of the best of the South Wales lads . . . and that's saying something cos they really were a cut above, not a duffer amongst 'em I don't think.
Now it's true that he did flirt with that mob south of the river, but I'm quite certain that he saw the error of his ways though. I did mention it to him on one occasion, and he replied ''We all make mistakes.'' That says it all I think. So the very best of luck to you Peter.
Whatever you decide to do next, I'm certain that you'll make an excellent job of it.

A local football club I'm involved in gets a little help from Rovers Community Department's program to encourage women's football. When thier manager was unable to take training for a period due to injury last season, Peter guest coached on a number of occasions, all in his own time.

Not as glamorous as I remember it. Football's changed.

Peter Aitken was my favourite player in the 1974-75 season. I also remember him more as a rugged defender, but with that ability to read the game and anticipate threats to our goal before they materialised.
I was surprised to see relatively little about his Rovers career on Wikipedia.
Peter Gerald Aitken (born 30 June 1954 in Penarth, Glamorgan) is a Welsh former footballer who played nearly 300 games in the Football League.
Aitken began his career as an apprentice with Bristol Rovers, making his debut in the 1972–73 season. He joined local rivals Bristol City in 1980, and two years later, with the club in danger of folding, Aitken was one of the "Ashton Gate Eight", eight players who agreed to terminate their contracts to save the club. The others were Dave Rodger, Geoff Merrick, Julian Marshall, Chris Garland, Jimmy Mann, Trevor Tainton, and Gerry Sweeney. While at Rovers he was the club captain, and after joining City he became the only player to captain both Bristol Clubs.
Aitken joined York City, playing 18 times before the end of the season. In July 1982 he joined non-league Bath City, although also played once for Bournemouth on non-contract terms the following season. He remained with Bath until June 1985 when he left to join Trowbridge Town.[5] He later joined Forest Green Rovers before rejoining Bath City in February 1988, although was released at the end of the season.
He returned to Bath for a third time in the 1991 close season, as assistant manager under Tony Ricketts. However, he was released as part of a cost-cutting process before the end of the season. He was later assistant manager to Lindsay Parsons a Cheltenham Town and briefly appeared for them on one occasion.
He later returned to Bristol Rovers to work in their Community Department, taking up the post of Community Manager in 2000, a post he still held in 2010.
Years Team Apps (Gls) 1972–1980 Bristol Rovers 234 (3) 1980–1982 Bristol City 41 (1) 1982 York City 18 (2) 1982–1985 Bath City 1982 A.F.C. Bournemouth 1 (0) 1982–1983 Gloucester City[1] 2 (0) 1985–198? Trowbridge Town 198?–1988 Forest Green Rovers 1988 Bath City[2] 9 (0)
Senior club appearances and goals counted for the domestic league only.

I remember Shrewsbury and Wrexham being at that level fairly long term, as well, come to that. Sorry, it's a Peter Aitken thread. Good luck to him.

can remember that 1-1 at Cambridge............. is that sad!! .....thought the "old bill" were glad that we came away with a result that day ,as far as my memory goes there were quite a few rovers fans there that day and a sense of trouble in the air.. fortunately never happened ,at least not on the scale the "bill" were fearing, some minor scuffles were all it amounted to
