Great Memories - I was at both the Cup games, the first with my Southampton-supporting girlfriend!
That relationship didn't last much longer.

I still can't watch that Ipswich game without feeling cheated.

I think the first game is against Blackpool although the kit looks more red than tangerine. Bob Hatton must have played against Rovers for a few different teams. I doubt that the Ipswich game would be played now with the snow on the pitch.

Great day in the tote against saints, and feet frozen solid against ipswich, both still send a tingle down my spine, really hard to believe its nearly 40 years, and the state of that pitch, happy days indeed.

The ref for the Ipswich game was Brian Daniel of Kettering, and no I didn't have to look it up- not that I hold a grudge mind

I have come to terms with the wrongly disallowed off-side goal against Ipswich. What has helped me has been the knowledge that I would have been probably killed at Millwall in the quarter-finals, so now I believe it was divine intervention by my guardian angel, rather than Brian Daniel's fault.
I would really like to organise a event to mark the 40th anniversary of Rovers versus Southampton from January 1978. It's still my favourite game of all time and some of this was due to various off-the-pitch events. Iconic is much over-used, but for ToteEnders and all Eastville Ernies, this game had it all!

The whole day was great for me met in town early with few other young uns who were gaining a bit of a rep had a set to with some s**thead knowle westers round by the wheatsheaf made our way to the game via Stapleton road watched the game and the whole aftermath had a few drinks round easton then on to B***** hill youth club to see siouxsie and the banshees then back into town following a few of our older boys another episode with the s**theads Remember it like it was yesterday although the next day didn't look too clever with a massive shiner and probably the worst hangover of my life made friends with people that day that our still great mates today unfortunately a few who were there are no longer with us Those were the days punk was booming cider was cheap and the gas were on the telly even got a little mention in browners book for that day

I hope that the person responsible for picking up the corner flag is alive and prepared to mark any planned anniversary. The film Zulu had nothing on that moment. I can still see the standing ovation from the South Stand for the brilliant counter-offensive tactics and execution, especially on a muddy pitch.

The Ipswich game was freezing and old bill were making sure there was going to be no repeat of the Saints incidents. Just re-reading 'Booted and Suited' again,I think he really sums up those days pretty well.

Not in my eyes. Twerton was an awful ground compared to the Eastville I remember.

I hope that you do organise a reunion,it would be good,I bet a few of the players would be up for it. Are you on facebook ? there is a Tote end old boys page, the Saints game has been talked about. We had a couple of small scale reunions after matches last season, good seeing some old mates especially at Christmas when a couple of them were back from Australia...

Or at least he is, if it is who I heard it was- if you see what I mean. I grew up with him, but he was from the wrong side of Oldbury Court (top green rules)

I even want to invite Laurie McMenemy.....and find the Lord Lucan of our 78 team - Mike Barry. No stone unturned. Punk and 70's Disco. Leather Jackets and kipper ties. "All roads lead to Eastville". Make Coal your goal. Flying policemen helmets.

Has any other stadium averaged silverware every two years in our history? No way. Twerton is our Mecca.
