Favourite game 4-4 V Spurs but either a testimonial or other game. Not league Was that our Centenary celebration and/or pre season friendly in 1983? Where Mabbs led team out? It must have been the Mabbutt game. I find that I can remember stuff from my childhood but then I get a bit blurred from 1979 onward to 2000. I know it was not a league game but I could t say who scored, in what order but it was a brilliantly entertaining game and I found out later that Boris said it was the best game he's played in. Gary Smart was my next door neighbour for some 5 years and he had some banging parties with lots of ex gas and also those who were still playing. There are some stories to be told but not on a public forum. It was a very happy time in my life for sure. Smarty is a great guy and I still chat with him on occasion and he's got me a ticket for a couple of games when I thought I wasn't going to get one, he's let me have his own. Great guy but I am digressing. Yes, it must have been 1983. 4-4.

Great guy but I am digressing. Yes, it must have been 1983. 4-4. I sat on a ward in Southmead hospital post back op about 24 years ago, late afternoon on a saturday a footballer arrived on the ward howling in pain with a nasty leg break and was soon wheeled off to theatre. Wish I could remember his name he was turning out for Brislington at the time and had previously played for Bath City. Anyway the following day a large group of Bath players arrived in tracksuits to see their former player on the ward, Gary Smart was one of the players. He came over to me in the opposite bed as I was wearing the quarters and had a good chat, I thanked him for that thunder bolt at the Gate years back and he was a top bloke, just wish I could remember his mates name, always wondered if he made a reasonable recovery after such a bad injury.

I hope that the person responsible for picking up the corner flag is alive and prepared to mark any planned anniversary. The film Zulu had nothing on that moment. I can still see the standing ovation from the South Stand for the brilliant counter-offensive tactics and execution, especially on a muddy pitch. Sorry to say that the lad with the corner flag wouldn't be interested,he was down there with me and he is a city fan. I thought it was Ralph M who had the flag?

It's all on film,my mate Tommy grabbed the corner flag, I just ran straight at them, didn't know untill he told me when we got back on the Tote. Pretty sure he was wearing a sheepskin coat, anyway saw it on the news and it was him

There are a number of different names going around with reference to the corner flag. I remember the person that I saw with the corner flag as being a big blond haired punk looking guy. That's all I know. I believe the *aggro* was shown on the following Monday lunchtime news programme. I don't recall ever seeing it.The clips on youtube cut off at the final whistle. If anyone's got a link.............?

Why isn't there any footage of the Tote invasion? There's various footage of Solton getting on and Red Rog commenting, with the police trying to control fans wearing red and white.
There must be a camera pitch side at North Enclosure because you can see fans/stewards/police.

I would guess that the camera crew wanted to pack up and leave as soon as possible when the game had finished. The portion of the film that showed the trouble probably went to the news and was deleted / discarded afterwards. The footage that remains of the Saints fans on the pitch is good from a social history point of view and it shows the fashion (mistakes) of those days. I remember the old teddy boy steward with the sideburns,I think I saw him on the video. The corner flag incident has been mentioned on the facebook page Tote End old boys and theres always a few names mentioned,Meader says he saw his mate Tommy on tv,that seems conclusive..remember though that there was 2 corner flags at that end and at the time I was told RF was wielding one... A few Rovers lads didn't linger in the ground and there was trouble under the M32 and outside the supporters club shop immediately after the game the Police being in the ground or in the car parks, they made sure it wasn't repeated at the Ipswich match with a huge well organised operation.

The only reason I mentioned the name I did, was that it was someone I knew, and I thought several different people had told me it was him. I cant even remember much about the invasion, I remember there was one, but my abiding memories of the match are the Randall goals, and the huge surge on the Tote when they went in. One of the Southampton fans being escorted around the pitch shown on the video is my old boss .

A strange coincidence is that the bloke you named was working in the same place as I was last week and I could have asked him,he has moved now though. We were talking about the match on the way to Scunthorpe,Paul Randall did so well to control the ball on the run in that mud, the mud in the Tote end penalty area was so deep that planks had to be put down to stand on when the groundsmen worked on it. The pitches these days are so much better,Eastville was muddy most of the season and for the last few home games of the year hardly any grass in the penalty areas or middle of the pitch.

Is Mike S still alive and is he prepared 1. to take a lie detector test followed by 2. providing an account of the incident in front of a packed audience? The event needs to go well, but there is no excuse for corner flag imposters. If he can produce photographic evidence of a blonde punk hair style from January 1978, then that's all we need. John Nettles never had a case like this to unravel. However, the man who did this needs to be recognised - anyone in the Tote that day will understand. I say man, because I remember 2 punk girls at the back of the Tote who were "allegedly" renowned for blow-jobs. With my detective hat on, I have ruled them out as being far too busy to get on the pitch.

Yes, guilty as charged KP My parents were so naïve. In the late 70s, I had Saturday morning school from 9 to 12.10 and "real education (albeit no sex education) via the Tote" from 2.15pm to 4.55pm. Amo, Amas, Amat, Amamus, Amatis, Amant to "Come and have a go at the Tote End Aggro."

John Nettles never had a case like this to unravel. However, the man who did this needs to be recognised the chief suspects appear from this to be:
Meadgas' 82'er mate Tommy Ralph M RF Mike S, blonde-haired punk from Horfield
its not exactly clear-cut

A bit like Cluedo isn't it ? we have the location and the weapon but not the perpetrator, ** ******,on the pitch, with the corner flag. RF is mentioned in Bovver ( Booted and Suited ) but as I said before 2 corner flags could be part of the confusion.

have seen some footage of the tote invasion, think it must have been local news channel, remember cringing when it was shown hoping mother wouldn't spot me. I always thought the lad who had the right side corner flag had brown curly hair and denim jacket on.
