This academy business is a real joke. A nice competition for League One and Two clubs to rotate their squads and chance their arm for a Wembley day out. Utterly ruins the 'little league' feel of the competition and patronises the professional players having to play the B team academy reserves of clubs just one division higher. The worst part is the clubs voted for it. 30 pieces of silver was just too much of a temptation. This real is a clusterf***

That soft southern half of the draw in full: A: Reading Youth; ROVERS; Pompey; Yeovil. B: Swansea Youth; Wimbledon; Newport; Plymouth; C: Chelsea Youth; Swindon; Exeter; Oxford. D: West Ham Youth; Coventry; Wycombe; Northampton. E: Southampton Youth; Charlton; Colchester; Crawley. F: Norwich Youth; Peterborough; Barnet; MK Dons. G: Brighton Youth; Southend; Stevenage; Leyton Orient. H: West Brom Youth; Millwall; Luton; Gillingham. How did Coventry City and West Brom get in the Southern draw and Cheltenham probably 50 miles further South get in the Northern section

I detest the notion of the U21s in the trophy, and have been like a dog with a bone and even contacted the EFL to define 'first team player' as L1 and L2 must field at least 5 first team players, and here's the response:
The requirement is not explicitly linked to any definition of a first team player, only in context of what is deemed to be ‘full available strength’. In terms of ‘full available strength’ the policy means –
(a) A Club must include in its starting line-up at least 5 out of the 11 players who started the Club fixture immediately preceding or following the relevant EFL Trophy; or (b) A Club must include in its starting line-up at least 5 out of 11 players who have made the most starting appearances in League and domestic Cup competitions fixtures during that season.

BBC is reporting:
EFL Trophy: Portsmouth supporters group plan competition walkout
A Portsmouth supporters group says they plan to walk out of EFL Trophy matches shortly after kick-off in protest at the competition's new format. ..
...Portsmouth's board voted against the EFL's proposal in the summer.
"Once the games kick off, we'll all walk out to show our contempt for this decision," Bob Beech from group SOS Pompey told BBC Radio Solent.
"We thought if fans boycotted the games completely, the club would suffer financially through no fault of their own.
"We voted through unanimously at our own meeting to walk out shortly after kick-off."

That's a noble pursuit, but as long as the clubs are still making out of this, I fear no one other than fans whom agree with this outrage will give a fig.
The only real way to make a point and force authority to listen is to not feed the hand at all. Pure economics. Pure stats. Which was one of the hidden agenda excuses that was used in first place, so it will be interesting to compare.
I know what I'm going to do, and where my hard earned will go that day..

Not a bad article, he is right in one thing in that the FL and the FL clubs must get in with their own ideas regarding league structuring/winter breaks etc before the FA and PL start dictating terms
I wouldn't be surprised to see a winter break in The PL, but can never see it happening in the FL because of the pitches and inconsistency in the weather

Many of the principles he expounds are worthy, someone looking for reform is probably good, and he seems refreshingly genuine in saying that it's a trial and they'll accept if it doesn't work. However, he still doesn't say why this trophy reform might benefit league clubs. I can't see anything other than it's a marginal input of cash - we're selling the clubs as someone for the big boys' U21s to have a run-out against. As a principle, that's not the way forward. Also, I don't think it's quite a decision for 92 individual clubs, as said: 48 of us have no choice but to send our first team to play someone else's U21s on their training pitch.

Last night saw the first round of the Scottish Challenge Cup with experimental U20 Premier sides and it finished 5 wins and 5 losses, the attendances surely did not cover expenses:
Celtic U20 5 - 1 Annan Athletic att 216
Clyde 0 - 5 Partick Thistle U20 att 351
Cove Rangers 2 - 1 Dundee U20 att 190
Formartine 2 - 5 Aberdeen U20 att 305
Inverness CT U20 0 - 3 Arbroath att 296
Motherwell U20 2 - 1 Edinburgh City att 402
Queen's Park 5 - 2 Kilmarnock U20 att 299
Ross County U20 2 - 3 Brora Rangers att 350
St. Johnstone U20 1 - 2 Turriff Utd att 320
Stirling Albion 2 - 3 Hearts U20 att 476

Now that all teams seem to play friendlies throughout July, replacing the EFL Trophy with a smaller summer tournament may not be a bad idea.

I see Rovers are offering tickets at £5 for the game against Reading reserves.
If I were them I'd also make a public statement to the effect they don't consider it a proper match, and send the team out wearing the training kit like in the friendlies.

Apparently the home club gets 45% of the gate receipts. So for an adult terrace ticket, that's £1.90 after VAT.
