The best team is the team that finishes 4th, and they go up more often than not. Accrington were the best team in the playoffs, sadly over the two games they looked a shadow of the side that came to the Mem. Every side gets decisions against them. Im sure they have benefited from decisions as well. Think back to the Wycombe travesty, and hitting the bar 3 times against Mansfield. I would still struggle to argue that we didn't deserve to go down. I'm not arguing with any of that, your logic is impeccable, but I still feel for Accrington. There are decisions that go against you, and decisions that go against you, it isn't often the whistle blows as the ball is on it's way into the net.

And after that, if memory serves, refs were supposed to wait until the ball was in a 'neutral' position before ending a half or a game, that's why so many games end when a goal kick or free kick is taken and the ball is nowhere near either goal. We have a couple of refs on here don't we, can anyone shed any light?

When I qualified as a ref, the rule was when 45 minutes (including any extra time) with the ball in play, or about to restart play such as from a throw in or corner, are up that's it. The clock is not stopped for when the ball goes out unless there is an an unreasonable time getting the ball back; that's why the whistle can go when a throw in or corner kick is about to be taken. The game may be extended to have a penalty taken. We were given the advice that if a goal was scored 'with the last kick' within time then have a restart and blow soon after to ensure all knew a goal had been scored. The FIFA site makes no mention about waiting for the ball to be in a neutral position, mind you amendments or international decisions come out all the time, so I may be wrong. www.fifa.com/development/education-and-technical/referees/laws-of-the-game.htmlRugby has a fairly good solution of having a hooter go when the time is up and the game finishes when the ball goes dead next time so a try could be scored minutes after the timed end of the half, I don't know how that works on a council park pitch or whether football fans would take to it as they did not with the 10 yard advancement for dissent rule.

Of course that situation is very rare, but is always a possibility as when the time is up, it's up, regardless of the position of the ball.
Fortunately for us in the end, it was the period between Kee's boot and the back of the net.
I've heard the whistle blown a few times before when the player had just taken a corner, but that doesn't get as much publicity as when its travelling in for a goal.
The fact is that was a long time ago and Accrington failed to score on the last day of the season like we did. I never saw any of the 6 posters on their forum give any congratulations to us so f*** em, it would have been a waste of L1 space and an empty away end at the Mem.

Er, he's rather famous for his size. Its not fat though. I remember giving him stick about his pie eating etc and he came right up to me at the end of the game, around 3 seasons ago, took his top off and just bristled his muscles at me while growling lol. He's not fat, not at all

As much as I like that I think it underlines why Ollie won't be managing again. He is a great natural comedian though. I hope that he is healthier & happier now. The last time I talked with him, in Longwell Green, he looked broken and unhappy. Good luck Ollie.

The best team usually goes up. The 4th place team has gone up over 50% of the time, the 7th place under 15%. Accrington couldn't beat Stevenage when the pressure was really on. Along with the late goals that have undone them in the playoffs shows a lack of mental strength. They looked a shadow of the team that have have been so impresssive over the season - it came to the crunch and they buckled - they don't deserve to go up. Then you would have to define ''the best team'. They held it together over 46 games, unlike Plymouth who were sat comfortably in a play off place and fell to pieces but now have a pay day at Wembley which will provide the sort of funds that would make a big difference to Accy. We couldn't beat Stevenage when the pressure was on either. Did Accy deserve for the ref to be so desperate to take a leak that he blew for half time just as a player was turning in the box to take a shot that went into the bottom corner of the net? That cost them 2 points. Would I swap places? Hell NO! Do I feel for them, yes, unlike us, Plymouth, Portsmouth they don't have the fan base or resources to necessarily pick themselves up, add to the squad and go again next year. According to michael deluded Appleton oxford were the best team yet finished 13pts behind top.

We couldn't kick the ball straight compared to now. We lost our last 3 home games when it was in our hands. Lost to torquay and a team who left their kit at home. 50pts was harsh but we had no devine right to stay up. Now we're getting what we deserve.
