I would just like to pay my respects to the 96 Liverpool fans who lost their lives going to a football match 27 years ago. I have just watched back the footage of that horrendous day and my thoughts are with those families involved.
Justice at last! RIP

Remember it well being reported on radio. I was working that day.
Such a shame it took so long to get to the truth.
Even at our level over the years, I've seen police abuse their position many times without redress.

I was at Brentford, we lost 2-1. It didn't matter.
The journey back in my Mark 5 Cortina is was the quietest I have ever known. Just silence punctuated by Radio 5 sport.

I had feared the verdict would shy away from the whole truth. Now I feel so relieved. Public record finally reflects the truth. South Yorkshire Police allowed 96 children, elderly and working people to be killed. Crushed to death in pens, treated worse than animals. The dead, including children, were blood tested for alcohol. South Yorkshire Police and The Sun reported horrible lies about their victims. The innocent were blamed for their own deaths. Public record finally reflects the truth today. The innocence of the victims. Their unlawful killing. But this is not over. Now we must see those responsible for all of the above crimes held to account. They killed. They lied. RIP each and every one of the 96, and respect to all their friends and families.

I'm glad the cover up is finally over, but watching the news tonight, and hearing various media organisations telling us how appalling the police were, without acknowledging their own roles at the time is nauseating.
I find it desperately sad, that whenever a major tragedy occurs there is a clamour to blame one side or the other. Those of us watching football at the time must have been in serious crushes at some time , I watched much of the cup game at The Dell in the early 80's when my feet literally were not touching the ground. People were crammed into pens, and often didn't help themselves, I have been in plenty of crowds were a chant of 'move all together' goes up from the back and a crowd surges forward and policing at the time was often diabolical you were certainly more likely to be pushed back into an over crowded situation by police rather than pulled from it. Thankfully police and fans seem to be more responsible now, I'm not too sure about the media though.

The worst i've been in was at Blackpool in 1990 when we clinched the Championship, I had to be lifted to the touchline for the last part, saw Nixons shot bulge the back of the net and everyone went mental. The other was getting out of Oxfords old Manor Ground, seemed to be a big bottleneck for the exit, was probably nothing but as a young-un was pretty scary! Certainly makes you think what it was like for those involved at Hillsborough, but at least they didn't pile the dead to the side of the pitch under coats and continue the match like the Burnden Park crush of 1946 en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burnden_Park_disaster

I got mixed up as well, but Brentford was the Bradford fire mate. The day of the Bradford fire we were at Gillingham. I thought we were at Swansea on Bradford's awful day! I thought we were at Gillingham the week after Chernobyl, the radioactive particles/molecules had just hit the Kent coastline? I was at Gillingham then for my one and only trip there, before the m25.

I was at Brentford with my dad who'd just turned 70. We tried to leave early but the police would not let us. After that day he never went to another match. Thank goodness times have changed and the threat of hooliganism, fences etc has gone.

At last truth and justice for the 96 and their families.
I hope that those responsible for their deaths are held accountable, especially those at the top of this mount of lies.
Lets not forget that there are 96 reasons to NEVER buy the Sun newspaper and NEVER forget what government were in power covering the whole sorry story, with lie after lie!!!
RIP those fellow football supporters God Bless those who fault this injustice for 27 years.

Even at our level over the years, I've seen police abuse their position many times without redress. and even in the modern era they do not address matters correctly I remember when we lost to Birmingham in the cup 3 nil a few seasons ago I was very concerned about the congestion in the away end when their stewards failed to increase the seating availability so all the gangways were blocked If anyone required medical attention there was no way the services could get to him / her quickly I remonstrated with the chief steward before half time and also spoke to the police office in charge whose response and attitude angered me greatly despite my approach being reasonable He dismissed the whole problem as not being a police matter and left to stewards! I subsequently emailed West Mercia police and did not receive even an acknowledgment! I believe that the police service has a very difficult job to do but on occasions they just don't help themselves

I believe that the police service has a very difficult job to do but on occasions they just don't help themselves I don't think Birmingham City knew what had hit them that night. I had a ticket purchased in advance, along with 1500 others or so. Only for another 1500 to turn up for pay on the day! From what I remember there was only one cash turnstile in operation. I couldn't see any of the squeeze in the gangways as I was in the very back row of the stand but could clearly see it was getting full in there. As you say, SOME police officers at football merely look at us like scum and haven't got a second to even speak (in a respectful/reasonable manner anyway) *I don't include any coppers from our Conference season in the above, every away day was managed first class by the boys/girls in blue*

Remember it well being reported on radio.as working that day. Such a shame it took so long to get to the truth. i was listening on radio as well, whilst trying to revise for first uni exams. i couldn't 100% get my head around it until i saw TV coverage later. Nothing has ever been the same since tbh. For so many people to simply go to a football match, yet not make it home was a true disgrace.

Saw newsnight last night.
Seeing just the words Truth and Justice on st.george's hall, lit up in red, was very poignant.

There is no justice. No one has or will be jailed and there are still people in government, such as Boris, who said awful things about Liverpudlians and yet they will be able to go about their lives unhindered. I would wager no one is jailed. 96 people died and were labelled as drunken scum. The truth may be out but there is no justice in this, not at all.

It's good that it has changed over the years, it needed to. My wife is not a football fan in any way and after the Bradford fire and the Hillsborough tragedy when I started taking my two sons to football mainly in Bournemouth and Bristol but other places she was not over happy! I always said the first thing I did when I got into a ground was look to see a way out if needed. And sometimes, just sometimes, the police were not helpful. Can remember a few occasions post Bradford and Hillsborough that the police hindered rather than helped. It's only now in past 3/4 years that they have stopped treating fans like cattle in the main. My concern has always been that at most matches there are never any problems but now and again there are and when that happens the police will sort it out but sometimes innocent people are blamed and caught up in it. I bet after this inquest into Hillsborough the police will review how they do things again and it will improve again. But it was a very high price that Liverpool paid. RIP.
