As some of you will know we've got a new group of 10 Dutch football supporters coming to the Exeter game. I'm waving them off at Schiphol on Friday and handing over 10 Rovers scarves at the airport. I'm flying to Bristol on Saturday morning. The Dutch Gas flag will be hanging from box 17-18. The Dutch guys will be in the Vic before the game. They also have a Mem tour and meeting with DC and the players.I hope they bring the Gas some good luck in what will be a very important game. They will be sat in the Tent End. If you come across them please give them a very warm welcome. They are friends of The Gas!!

What's the story with the Dutch Gas? Gas-exiles or Dutch Dutch? (and if so how did it happen?)
The tent end was relatively lively last weekend so don't feel inhibited.

It was bloody awful but he said he enjoyed it, despite having a 2 hour drive to and from the game. He was probably the only Dutchman there but he is a good singer!

I'm afraid they we so keen that they had booked the tickets up for the game and the flights before I could give any advice! The best I could do was ask my good lady wife if she would like a day shopping in Bristol with me on that day and then discovered (revealed!)that the Gas were at home that day. Now she's off into Bristol with our sister in law while I will do my best to entertain out Dutch friends at the footy. Look out for the flag hanging from Box 17-18.

Did they enjoy their day, does anyone know? Hi Angas, Many thanks for asking how the new group got on. Unfortunately the leader of the group "Mokum" couldn't travel due to last minute personal circumstances. The other 9 members of the group had a truly great day at our club. I'm sure it won't be the last time they come and watch the Gas. I put the following thank you note on the Rovers Appreciation Facebook page: A VERY BIG THANK YOU To the lovely people at Bristol Rovers for a great Dutch Gas day out. We were given a very warm welcome by all the club officials we came across. They all made us feel very special. Keith Brookman was an excellent host and looked after us all very well indeed. It was nice to meet Steve Hamer and Lee Atkins in Box 1. Nothing was too much trouble and they we're willing to give honest and open answers to all the questions fired at them. We then headed off to the changing rooms to meet up with the players. One for one they were only to pleased to have their photo's taken and sign some autographs. They also showed a genuine interest in the Dutch Gas project. After this we headed down to pitchside for our meeting with the president, Wael al Qadi. We are so very, very lucky to have this man and his family at our football club! Wael is such an genuine man and so very easy and pleasant to talk to. This is how one of our conversations went: Me: "the changing room was very full just now with 14 of us taking photo's and talking with the players. We're just two hours away from a huge game for the Rovers. I have played a bit of football myself and I'm not sure I would have appreciated these distractions in the pre match preparation. All I would want to do is focus on the game ahead. I'm surprised this meeting was allowed to go ahead". Wael: "John, you must realise that this is all to do with the philosophy of the club. You, your friends and all our supporters are our family. The club officials know that, the players know that and the supporters must know that. You are our family and you are always welcome to be with us". We certainly do have our club back and I'm convinced that Bristol Rovers can look forward to some exciting times ahead! UP THE GAS! Also a huge thank you to Bernie Reid for the hospitality in Box 18.

That's absolutely brilliant. A real shame that Mokum wasn't able to make it - I hope they do visit again and that he is able to join them next time. When it comes to Mr al Qadi, I am continually lost for words. How did we get so lucky! Thanks John

John, is there any possibility that your group and their group could merge/unite and create an even bigger Dutch Gas group or do you live in different parts of the Country and therefore logistically that's not practicable ? I had to think what to call you all as collectively we Brits at least call you Dutch and describe you as either coming from Holland or the Netherlands and whilst I recall many years ago having this explained to me it is so many years ago I can't for the life of me remember the explanation I have a number of times tried to set up an informal Gasheads in Wales group because I know there are quite a number of us 'living in exile' but either people are too shy or just don't seem to want to bother but hey ho I'll carry on waving my own flag

John did explain it to me when we visited him a couple of years ago. South Holland and North Holland are 2 of the provinces/regions that make up the Netherlands. Both stretch along the North Sea coast. We did manage a nice bike ride through the dunes from John's house in Zandvoort, North Holland towards Noordwijk which is in South Holland. I think the other Group may be from another area of the Netherlands. Isn't Dutch the language? Greater detail needed John! UTG

Adrian and Eric, thanks for both your interest in our project! Most members of both Dutch Gas groups are based around the Amsterdam area. It's quite unique that I'm the only Englishman involved with all this! I think it's important to remember that all these guys have a favourite Dutch team and their interest in The Gas doesn't generally go as far as the interest for their own clubs. Saying that 4-5 of the members have probably been to about 15 Gas games over the years. Organising a club is not really the way I've gone about things here. I often hear that my enthousiasm for the Rovers is quite infectious and whenever a trip comes up there is quite a group who want to come along! My youngest son Duncan seems to have similar ideas and a couple of his Dutch mates joined us at Wembley last season, for a Sabadell trip and again away at Luton last August. The new group had a wonderful time last week at the Mem against Exeter and it wouldn't surprise me if some of them join us at a possible Wembley final on May 30th. I'm in contact with a total of about 20 Dutch followers of The Gas.
Adrians was spot on with his explanation of the Netherlands!
