Got released far too early imo as he showed plenty of promise. Always thought he looked a solid keeper in the games he has played against us since so if true, he'd be a welcome addition in my view

Can't see the point . At his best he wasn't good enough for us. Why should he be good enough for us now? I would rather stick with Mildenhall but personally I would sign either Nicholls or another keeper with no Rovers connections. At his best? He was still a kid when he left

Seems sensible - he's an experienced League 2 goalkeeper and we need an experienced League 2 goalkeeper.
The stuff about being an ex-player is irrelevant in this case. It often doesn't work out for ex-players because the expectation levels are set unrealistically high/low based on prior performance for us when the player is unlikely to be the same player in the same mindset as he was before. But Ryan Clarke hardly played for us and neither set the world alight nor was a liability when he did - it's not like we're welcoming home a former Rovers legend here. He was an OK young player but we decided to go a different way at the time - since when he's arguably carved out a successful career for himself elsewhere. If anything it should work as a positive motivating force for him to square off his career by showing Rovers what they missed out on. Because his record since compares pretty favourably with most goalies we've had between the sticks in recent years.

Ryan Clarke spent so much time as a sub for us he was given a model bench when he left, I think at Rochdale. Later posters are right he has been a fair keeper since leaving us.

Never claimed to be, just a rumour I've heard. If I were in the know I'd have refused to substantiate the rumour with the word "source" somewhere and then got all pissy when someone calls me out when it's wrong.

Sorry but you have read it wrong. I didn't mean that he was at his best when he last played for us. I meant when he was a regular at Oxford United. Ok maybe a reasonable League 2 keeper at his very best but now a no 2 at Northampton. Very similar to Mildy being no 2 for us. Hope very much that DC is looking at a little better if we are serious about chasing promotion. From what I have seen of Clarke playing he is not up to the standard of Nicholls or Puddy as regards distribution and that seems to be a no 1 criteria for a DC keeper as he likes the ball distributed quick. Ryan Clarke is very much in the Mildenhall mould. Personally I think Nicholls could become a fine keeper and would prefer to see us looking further forward.

but now a no 2 at Northampton. To an incredibly highly rated 'keeper in Adam Smith, forget what league he is in and look at who he's up against.

Well I don't think we know how bad the Puddy injury is yet. But what you're suggesting probably can't be found midseason without taking a bit of a risky punt on a young unproven goalkeeper. We know what we're getting with Clarke - a known quantity. I would quite happily have stuck with Mildenhall all along but Clarke clearly wouldn't. I've never really understood the obsession with goalkeeper's distribution as a major criteria for judging the position - for me if you are setting your team up to rely on your goalkeeper as a key distributor then you are doing something wrong. Most goalkeeper's at League 2 level have adequate distribution skills or they wouldn't be there. Sometimes I think we fixate on the 2 times a game the goalie hooked the ball into touch because it's memorable and forget about the 30 times he put the ball into play perfectly well. I will acknowledge that Puddy is particularly good at distributing from hand but that should always be a bonus not an essential criteria. If it is an essential then chances are you will get a goalkeeper who is likely to be deficient in other areas.

Clarke at 33 is experienced but just looked and his last league appearance was for Oxford United on 6 April 2015. 343 league and Conference games including almost 30 games for Salisbury City when Darrell Clarke was player manager.
Has had two league cup and JPT cup games for the Cobblers this season the last outing being at Millwall on 6 Oct in the JPT.
So similar to Mildy not many minutes on the pitch this season.

Almost enough to wish for an ITK sub-section of the forum for all of these rumours to go into.

At Forest Green, Shaun Taylor was asst manager. Wanted rid of Clarke but he was on long contract.

Then you've got Fabian Speiss.

Our visit to Alfreton last season to-gether with Braintree were the low points for me.It must never be allowed to happen again!!
