Just heard that our long serving former Bristol born winger Bobby Jones has died. Bob joined Rovers in 1956 and had brief spells away at Northampton and Swindon Town but returned to Rovers playing until 1973. Scored over 100 goals for the Gas

Viva Bobby Jones!
Another of my 1960's dream team gone, makes me feel old! Bobby was so fast he often forgot to take the ball with him - RIP

Let's hope Bobby gets a good sendoff at the Northampton match (ironically one of his other clubs). Surely the club will play "Viva Bobby Jo(nes)" by the Equals for one last time before the match - if the club don't have the CD I will be happy to bring mine. Nothing but good memories. Condolences to the family. RIP Bobby. Legend.

Can't talk about Bobby as a player but as a man he was a true gent. Whenever I met him he always had time to chat about frankly whatever you wanted to. His career spanned generations playing alongside playing alongside greats from Bradford & Biggs to Bannister and Warboys.
RIP Bobby.

His career spanned generations playing alongside playing alongside greats from Bradford & Biggs to Bannister and Warboys. RIP Bobby. I'll echo that Chewbacca. Late 1968 my mum wrote to the club asking for a signed photo of a player for my 10th birthday. She was disappointed that nothing was sent in the post prior to my birthday. However on the day Bobby turned up with a colour club poster signed by the whole squad including the management. Bobby kept in touch throughout his playing days and provided complementary stand tickets for the away games that we travelled to. He even got me a programme signed by the Leeds United team that kicked Rovers off of the park at Elland Road in the 1970's. Wish I still had that. RIP Bobby

Very sad news indeed. I loved his wholehearted approach to the game, win lose or draw he was always trying; and he really was one of us as well. Viva Bobby Jones.

RIP Bobby.
Top bloke who grew up close to my mum's house. Always willing to have a chat. Good player too. Thoughts are with the family.

Always hard to hear such bad news when memories are of fit healthy footballers.
Please wrap Harold in cotton wool.

Very nice obituary from the club . . .
I loved the fact that his solitary goal for Northampton Town was against our neighbours south of the river. Very appropriate I thought, and Bobby must have loved it.

I agree with Eastville1966, lets get "Viva Bobby Jo(nes)" by the Equals played at the Mem before a minutes applause for Bobby. He was a key player in the first season I watched Rovers regularly (1969/70), not the most skillful forward to grace the old Thirs Division, but always gave 100% every game. I remember one game that I watched near the tunnel, Dodgin substituted him on the hour mark, and you could see how dissappointed he was to come off the field.

Scored over 100 goals for the Gas I believe he played for Walsall ? i knew Bobby and his family very well & considered him a close friend. We would often see him over Southey park, in season and out of season, doing extra hill sprints and other hard training. The fittest man in the squad. He was kind to us kids and gave his time freely. He coached us and refereed our jumpers for goalposts games. A true gentleman who suffered, in the extreme, from depression once he had no more contact with football. My thoughts are with his sons, Mark & Neil and with his wife and extended family RIP Bob, you always had good and kind words and gave us encouragement. Your suffering is over now. So sad to have heard this. I always thought the club could have opened a hand to him. He would have loved that

I am sorry that I haven't yet found out the details of the funeral but I will drop into his sons place, hopefully Mark will not feel it an intrusion. I know that when my own Father died, I found it very nice to have people come and visit in the immediate period after. I had hoped I would find out via the pub as the Royal archers is where Mark would normally let people know. It could be that Bobby has to have an post mortem. It took me 3 weeks before they even released my Father for burial Hoping I will be able to tell you all later tonight. Thanks for your patience
