So its very tight at the top now - we're one behind Barnet, plus some goal differences, Macc are 3 points and some goal differences behind us, and Grimsby, with the ginger one, are 5 points behind us with a game in hand and more goal differences
I'm thinking that a couple of months ago we'd have bitten anyone's arm off to be in this position - it doesn't seem long ago that Barnet were double-digit points and about 25 goal differences away from us
But what next?
Have we had our purple patch, with Barnet now back on song? Are Macc and Grim peaking too early or timing it right? Have we had our little wobble, and recruited both experience and ability to help us over the line? Is it going to come down to bottle, and if so has Daryl got enough in the tank at his still-relatively-tender age?
Theories please.....

That famous pundit once said "one game at a time" and i hope that 3 points will be in the bag come Saturday.
I think Eastleigh may have blown it as the teams above all look to be in form now.....

I've mulled over the different scenarios, assessed the run-ins of the competing teams and calculated all the probabilities of the various outcomes. I know the total of points which I think the number 1 team will get. But at this stage of any season, it's all about magic. It's about: - Sean Rigg getting the only goal of a very unpromising game away at Macclesfield.
- Hartlepool hitting the top (not the underside) of the bar in the last game of the season after Rickie's goal.
- Losing at home to Wrexham and only drawing at home against Lincoln, but still having the belief to go on and get the necessary points in the other games.
- Being a goal down at home to Cardiff with a few minutes to go, but finding a way to secure all three points (even if that meant concussion of the Bluebirds' keeper)
- Finding inspiration in the overconfidence of your main rivals (wearing T-shirts proclaiming their title-win) to claim the prize from them.
So just honour the Mayan skull, wear your lucky pants on match-days and keep a positive mental attitude on the terraces and in the stands, home and away.

I've spoken to Mayan Skull, he will do his best but he asked me to deliver these words of advise to DC and the team...
"Win every game and score a shed load of goals".
He's a tactical genius.

Not much genius from the skull there, he forgot the advice to score shed loads of goals in the first 20 minutes to calm everyone's nerves

I dread to think what would happen if we have to spend another year in this division.

I dread to think what would happen if we have to spend another year in this division. given how well we've done this season with an unbalanced squad and a terrible start, I would genuinely expect promotion next season. I know it's not as simple as that, especially if good players leave free/cheap, but in the olden days 1 good season would nearly always lead to tweaks and improvements, and an even better season next year.

Theories please..... I'm not so sure Barnet are back on song, as suggested by one of many similar comments from Halifax fans last night: "Thought Barnet were disgraceful tonight. Just really really poor for a top of the table team.......Would say Grimsby and Bristol rovers deserve to go up compared to Barnet." Yet they are top. Grimsby are coming strong and despite the evidence to the contrary from our 4-0 drubbing of them, Macclesfield are still in the hunt. My belief is that we have recruited well and I'm hoping that we'll see the evidence for that on Friday night and for the rest of the season. Even though promotions for Bristol Rovers have been few and far between, we've got plenty of players and a manager who have enjoyed promotion success - which will count for a lot when it comes down to the wire. If we hit our straps, I think we can take any team apart and I am hopeful that DC will be bold in giving game time to our match winners like Dawson, Easter, Balanta and Harrison.

Our recruitment has been fairly high risk. We've spent a decent amount of energy and money (presumably) on Balanta and Easter who clearly have a pedigree that is above this level. However, they are really only available to us because they have had injury problems that have massively stalled their careers. They're modern versions of the Gary Waddock signing. So we have the talent in the building but it's talent that needs to be protected if we're going to get something out of them. I think we've gambled that they would be up to speed for the last 5-6 games of the season - we're about to find out if that was a good call or not.

The effects of scoring an early(ish) goal on both the team and supporters, would be a tremendous boost to the games atmosphere. The team might relax and play with more composure and confidence, and the fans would surely respond to that. Perhaps now that Jermaine Easter has returned eh? Jermaine Easter (or A N Other for that matter) scoring for BRFC after only 3 minutes play.

I'm not disagreeing with your views irish, but my recollection of the signings of Angelo Balanta and Jermaine Easter is a little different to yours. They were both playing at a higher level than we're presently at when signed, Easter from Millwall and Balanta from QPR (via a host of loan clubs). Purely from memory Balanta was signed in September last year, and was intended to bring a little class and experience to the team. When he arrived he was fit but short of match practice due to him not having a club for the pre-season, and in trying to attain fitness he injured himself, which did lead to a long lay-off. In Easter's case he again signed for the club whilst fit, but injured himself in his first full start for us . . . after only six minutes I believe. But the point that I'm trying to make, is that neither player had a history of injury problems that ''massively stalled their careers'' when they were signed. If they did then I must have missed it, and as I have history I'll apologise in advance.

I agree, I don't think Balanta as ever had a career to stall?
Easter is a different animal and surely he has to be given the chance to prove his worth from the kick off on Friday.
Not sure I'd fancy taking on the likes of Lines & Easter if I was in Aldershot's struggling side, as both of these players could easily be playing for a top Div 1 side on their day, even higher.

Have we had our purple patch, with Barnet now back on song? NOPE.
Are Macc and Grim peaking too early or timing it right? BY PEAKING TOO EARLY, THEIR FORM OVER 8 MATCHES HAS RARELY SURPASSED OURS IN 2015.
Have we had our little wobble, and recruited both experience and ability to help us over the line? POSSIBLY. IT'LL BE GOOD MANAGEMENT IF THAT WAS THE CASE.
Is it going to come down to bottle, and if so has Daryl got enough in the tank at his still-relatively-tender age? YES, I THINK MENTAL TOUGHNESS AND ATTITUDE PLAY IMPORTANT ROLES THIS STAGE OF SEASON.
We have played ourselves into an interesting position. We have persevered and caught up with the front runner without really setting the world alight in performances or scorelines. Conversely, Barnet have crashed out of games conceding 3/4 goals in a match and losing 10 matches already this season.
In tune with alot of racing scenarios, it's often a tactic to keep in touch with pacesetters, then make a push towards end of race. The timing is crucial.
I would love to see us go for it. Up tempo, plenty of shots and attacking play from the start and a more balanced first team mixed with experience and youth to cope with the pressure. And if it all goes t*ts up, then I guess the playoffs will have to suffice....and we do it all again! Come on, Gas, we can do it!!!
