Numbers are good but vocally it's still s**te and something needs to be done
2 or 3 loud goodnight irene and that's as good as it gets
Only about 20% of our following actually stand up the rest just sit at the bottom and clap and moan! It's boring!
We need to freshen things up I keep saying this.
New chants and more people need to put the effort in. I'd understand if we were mid table but the last few games are huge. I don't understand how people can just go footie sit down and clap when we score! ( obviously understand if you're old or have problems standing )
You look at grimsby. They've been in this division for ages and took 1,000 to barnet and 950 to chester! They put in the effort and sing loud and support their team why can't we?
To be fair reading back at this what I've said wont make a difference and I'll just get moaned at but someone must agree with me surely

Is it because we have an older average age away support?
Where are the groups of youths 18-24 that come away in numbers? Sure, there are a few dotted about..
Or maybe its because we need a conductor like blackthorn baz...?!!

It's nice to have a good atmosphere at games, probably makes it more enjoyable / memorable . Both Noise and numbers reflects well on any club who can tick those boxes, especially if that team is not particularly successful .To be honest I believe it has little effect on the outcome of any game. Spent years losing my voice from Hartlepool to plymouth and everywhere inbetween. Did it halt Pompeys slide to div 2? Did it prevent Grimsby dropping a couple of points at Chester, after being 2 up? Do Braintree ever win away? No further questions.

The atmosphere doesn't have an effect on the games, as gasshole was saying. Look at Barnet, terrible atmosphere and a tiny ground that is still somehow empty. But has that stopped them being top? No.

I agree with the OP and I think it's down to a few things:
1) The average age of our away support does seem to be higher than ever this season. You look around at away games and there are more grey heads than anything else, and this is bound to have an effect on the noise levels from the away end. Blame us being in this league for that one.
2) We do desperately need some new songs/chants. Ours all feel outdated and boring after years of singing the same old stuff, and I believe a couple of new catchy chants would breathe some life back into the support.
3) It almost feels like relegation last season has sucked all the vocal support out of our followings. No one can seem to be bothered to sing at games anymore. The excitement and buzz at an away game doesn't seem to be there this season.
However, a couple of other points to make:
Firstly, Grimsby do seem to have great support, but who's to say that they weren't exactly like us in their first year down here? They've had a long time to get over the disillusionment and probably accept where they are now more than we do.
Secondly, I don't agree with some people who have said that the atmosphere makes no difference to the fortunes of a team. But, I reckon it's only a small difference, maybe 1 or 2%, and if your team is 5%+ worse than most other teams in the league, then of course having good support alone won't save a team from relegation?

I'm old and grey and sing along. , no I fdont start the chants but join in once it's going and yes there is an elder element of away support this season and it's not just about new songs it's just getting everyone involved. Somebody bring a drum or two to the away games for the rest of the season

I'd rather we stayed silent for 90 minutes than ever do anything like that tripe.

Two thoughts. At Morecambe a couple of years ago we had one chant all game of 'Johnny Ward's Blue and White army' but at Nuneaton this season their on loan Goalie who had bright ginger hair wore an all pink kit and the impromptu chant of ,'Ginger and Pink your'e having a laugh',was very funny and original. At Telford, the chants on the concourse were far more original than during the match.Perhaps we could enrol a few young 'uns at the Mevagissey Football Chant's course which takes place every other Thursday at the local Methodist church.

I don't think we need any new songs or chants home or away. Just bring back some of the old ones.
One thing I will say is at least the Blackthorn End has slowed down some of the songs abit instead of singing them at 100 miles an hour

Some @rsehole turned up at Wembley at our last playoff final with a drum, I told him I would put my foot through it and he promptly disappeared. (I'm not normally a violent person.)

we get out sung away even when we have outnumbered the home crowd because most clubs have drummers and a group of lively enthusiastic youngsters who sing if their winning or losing, where as most of our following are over 45 and if you start singing no one joins in and you end up looking like an idiot and any over enthusiastic behaviour is frowned upon and for this reason all the charactors that started the chants have either been banned or no longer attend,we also dont have many songs that we sing so end up repeating them over and over again whilst other clubs have more of a variety of chants, how our support gets portrayed as a rowdy bunch i will never know as most like quoted in a previous post just sit and politely clap and sad as it to say we mostly only sing when were winning as we expect to win and when we dont there is just shocked silence. The decline in our vocal support has been happening since our relegation from league one and has coincided with our poor form on the pitch.i was hoping it might have returned what with us being near the top of the league but alas it hasnt. The one thing were great at though is sighing and tutting and groaning after every mistake..feel free to rip into me but these are the facts.

Well hopefully this can change if we take 2,500 plus to kidderminster. We took over 2,000 to Woking albeit that only 1,900 got in and that was like a morgue apart from a few brave souls in the stand. The support is big away but tends to be spread out and only a few seem to generate a head of steam to sing. Often most of the singing is done before the game.... It does seem better when the home fans are singing. At Chester the small number of fans in their stand near the Gasheads started to wind us up and for a while we got going. Mind you a lot of our on the field performances away have started slow or under pressure and that doesn't help. IMHO You definitely need a group of about 30/40 or so who are committed to sing throughout and the rest will join in. PS That said I have noticed that alcohol affects the performance of some.....

Alcohol effects the ability to keep it up for 90 mins or so I'm led to beleive

Maybe we are being 'outdone' by some home support on our travels this season, because simply 'Bristol Rovers' are in town. Not to say that I personally think we are a huge, better than anyone else kind of club, but opposition fans sure seem to think so (browsing forums etc...) Having been away a lot this season, some of them don't half make a massive effort!
No ones telling me, that Halifax Town had all those young un's jumping up and down for half hour & setting off flare's/fireworks in the ground with all those chants for Southport, Kidderminster or Eastleigh at home!

I'd turn my back on away games if we had belters shooting fireworks at the roof of a stand. Grade A tossers.
