Update from Southend's AGM a couple of days ago Ron Martin: "The reason I don’t make statements about the stadium is because it’s commercially sensitive. It’s not too dissimilar to somebody selling their house. In regards to Sainsbury’ we remain contracted to them. Whether or not they will build a store on Roots Hall I don’t know, I don’t think they know yet either. They certainly won’t build their very large store. They’ve shelved many schemes across the country. With that uncertainty I looked at other ways of funding the stadium without putting the club in debt. I’ve found a solution to that. We’re currently planning a revised planning application for the West Stand at the new ground and a comprehensive application will be submitted and registered by June. At that time I can make a public statement." What a refreshingly sensible statement, with all the hallmarks of managing the situation, having confidence in what's being said, and trying to keep people in the loop.

Nick would probably say that he was managing the situation by trying to get all of the money out of Sainsbury's. Not sure that what's happening at Sarfend is comparable to here though, it looks as if Sainsbury's have been handed a 'Get Out Of Jail Free' card for that project. The Local Rag ran a piece on it yesterday, they said, Why are Sainsbury's helping Southend with their tax bill whilst we have to go to Wonga?

What I find interesting is why/how Sainsbury's and Southend are still in a contract.

Maybe because there's a contract that hasn't expired, and Southend owe them money?

Ignore the latest debt fuelled bubble in Ireland and the UK still has the fastest growing economy in the EU. Odd isn't it, do the exact opposite of what you suggest and the economy recovers and is better balanced. You'll have to do better than that story. A dreadful piece, it ''forgets'' to mention or take into account the fact that we will then be free to trade on our terms outside of the EU. Ha ha yes it did But anyway, the real local issue is that with real incomes lower than they were 4 years ago and with a planned £30 billion suppression on demand by the current government, what will happen to income streams at the new stadium (if we build it) Or do you accept the concept that running a football club excuses you from the normal concepts of supply and demand...
I know you dont

Surely income streams are looking more promising than they have done for years now we've exited the recession?
As far as Southend are concerned if they needed assistance from Sainsbury's to pay their tax bills how are they going to finance building a new stadium without selling Roots Hall beforehand? Could it be the Chairman is just telling fans what they want to hear?

Could it be the Chairman is just telling fans what they want to hear? or someone is going to build it and rent it to them?

I know you dont
Saw the bit banging on about a bespoke trade deal with the EU, missed the bit where they added in the benefits of being able to negitiate freely with the rest of the world. Also saw the bit about UK propping up the German economy, they need us more than we need them. Not sure it's even worth thinking about UWE revenue streams. Put on one side the real terms income of Mr Average Supporter and ask 2 questions, A. Do you think the thing will ever get built. B. If it is built, what's the likelyhood of bolt-on revenue going to Rovers?
