BRISTOL Rovers' move to their new stadium has been delayed.
Chairman Nick Higgs has revealed that the club will not be going to their new home beside the University of the West of England at Stoke Gifford until the start of the 2016/17 season.
Mr Higgs blamed the delay on the judicial review mounted by TRASHorfield who were against a Sainsbury's supermarket being built on the site of Rovers' current home at the Memorial Stadium.
When that failed there was an attempt by a supporter of TRASHorfield to get the Memorial Ground listed as a war memorial.
But the application was rejected by English Heritage.
Mr Higgs said: "We have missed the start of the 2015/16 season now for the stadium to be ready. The appeals stopped work on the scheme until they were resolved.
"In all, the delays have taken us back to where we were last autumn before the judicial review was launched.
"It has cost us a year and about £1.5 million so far. We hope to get the building work started sometime this year."
Bristol Rovers have to sell the Memorial Ground to help finance building the new 21,700 seat stadium.
The club were relegated from the Football League to the Conference when they finished second from bottom of League Two at the end of last season.

Well it's undeniable TRASH and Mr Carstairs have been a delay.
It makes sense to not rush the build and get it built for the start of the 16/17 season.
I would like to think though that The chair had a rough idea of when we could be on site seeing as after TRASH he was so say pushing to get on site in May
As for the £1.5m, is this the clubs projected losses for the enxt couple of seasons?

Any time in the next 6½ months seems reasonable to me. Who's next, some newt society?

Like I been saying on this forum "We wont move mid season". So now this as been confirmed August 2016 we need to count 15-18 months backwards. When the OS said " We aim to start in 2014" it now makes sense. I would be looking more towards a spring 2015 start.
I still find it difficult to believe one minute we are close to starting work and in the next sentence it is off for another year. I have never really believed we can pull this one off. However: it:s no use arguing that point because all will be scaled down now for a long time and we can focus on other things in life...

Given we hoped to be on site in May after the JR decision and appeal went in our favour, and the Carstairs appeal has added a further couple of months, anyone know what's causing the prolonged delay to the start date?

The fact we won:t even be having a pop at a mid season move makes things even more worrying. I mean whats to stop us starting in September 2014 and moving January 2016. But I always felt that would be ruled out and it will be called off yet another year or at best in "2 and half years time".
I don:t think things look good now _ sorry folks for my negative views..

It make me laugh some people thought this was a done deal, the only things Rovers have built since 1935 when the Tote was constructed have either been paid for by the supporters or insurance companies.
Do not and will not believe it'll be built until the day I walk in.

Sure it would be nice to have a clean cut start of season date for moving to a new stadium - but surely equally important is to get it built and facilities underway.
Empty land = NO income.
Constructed stadium = Potential Income
Added to which the longer the delay the more constructions costs are likely to increase.

The one point I still dont understand is why we cannot move in to a new stadium mid season. I'm pretty sure I went to Hull City's new stadium around Xmas which was their second game there. Have the rules changed since then? It makes no sense to me that the league would stand in the way of us movng into a bradn new stadium by insisting that we play in our tumble down stadium for longer than we need to

This is good news surely? There were plenty of people moaning their bag off last week saying no communication because it ain't going to happen now we get some communication saying it is going to happen.
If we manage to finish in the top 5 next season and claw our way back into the league then starting now would have meant a completed but unusable stadium for best part of a year. That makes no sense whatsoever. Only if we remain in the conference might it have been possible to move in and play mid season, but as we know being in the conference is not an option!

I think we had all accepted 16/7 once known that missed May start, it's the 'hope' to start 'this year' that worries me. And I don't see that as good news

Expected news, no point in rushing it and the league don't let you move in half way through a season now. Still looking to start the build this year, will allow more time for any further delays and delays for the wonderful British weather etc.

Nothing on the os yet. They used to say "any news, you'll hear it first on the official website". Do the EP pay us for exclusives these days?

I'm not for one minute saying that it will not be built but ...... If history tells us just one thing about this and the way way the club is being run then it's "seeing is believing". Simple as.

Well, considering most projects struggle to get completed on time, and within budget, I would have thought the extra time created with pushing back the opening would be used in getting the thing started asap to allow for snags that lie in wait during the build. Continually kicking a start into the long grass simply confirms my own and many others view that this project will never happen.

It's also quite telling that this information has not come through official channels but from the local press.

Must agree with the majority view that it "Don:t look good".. To many questions and not enough answers, Like I said NH detailed report in a few weeks time will make my mind up. If he states a "Time" and explains the process to get that "start date". Then I may just believe a very little.
If its " We will update you in a few months" . Then to me he is dragging. After all: NH said "Detailed"..
This detailed report is something no-one can hide from now..

Sometime this year - more time for excuses and to see how we don't cope as a non league outfit. Also, more time for Sainsburys to pull the plug. They are big enough to be able to take a hit on a contract break. It ain't going to happen I tell thee.
