Nailed on,100% penalty and the ref got it wrong. The ball was past the defenders head when it hits his arm and goes over the bar due to the upward motion of said arm. The ref had a clear view and was right with his original decision, which he bizarrely changed on the say so of the Lino who didn't have a clear view and was much further away. Thankfully it had no bearing on the result in the end.

yeah, got to agree that it must have been his head.
I was 35 metres away and immediately and 100% thought it was a handball, sending off and penalty. You could see his arm go up ad the ball then went over the bar. From my angle it must have been handball. I couldn;t believe it when it wasn't given.
I texted my brother to say the above, but added that if he didn't handle it then it's a really brave/good call and really interesting as it goes to show that 100's of people can be sincerely wrong.
As I calmed down I remembered that a (Barnet) player went over to the ref as he was was near the dead ball line, and going over to the lino. The player was absolutely 100% convinced that it wasn;t handball. It was an interesting lesson because although footy players routinely lie, I don;t think they lie like that, with so much passion.

The only conclusive evidence, will be if a picture or footage emerges from either the family stand or the east terrace directly in line with the incident!
We can just carry on debating until then.

Straight away we thought he hand balled it with an upward motion which can be seen again from the clip. There is another clip on another thread which is clearer to make a judgement. In my eyes it is clear cut but others may have a different reasoning!

Both clips and the vine have persuaded me that he headers it before it reaches his arm. Of all the people who saw the incident the lino was best placed to see and despite thinking he was wrong at the time I now think otherwise. The original clip from behind the goal makes it look like handball but to me it's like an actors stage punch. All you can tell is that at one point the ball and hand are in line, not that they are in contact.

Take issues like this away from football with technology and it would ruinl football, this incident is more of a talking point than the winning goal

The clip from the vine neither proves nor disproves the handball. If you were unbiaised (which I'm clearly not !) it looks like it came off his head with his arm/hand flapping about behind his head. Whether it hit his hand after hitting his head you cannot tell with certainty from the vine clip. As someone else has mentioned on this thread our players told Darrell Clarke it wasn't handball and they should know being far closer that any of us were to the action.

The referee had a great view of it and immediately gave it. The referee assistant then immediately ran to edge of the pitch on the line by the penalty box. Here is a clip of where you can see the assistant in the right position ready for the penalty. Pause on 16 seconds
I seen this point raised on twitter and I agree fully with it. The referee assistant agreed with the referee's decision that it was a penalty otherwise why would the assistant stand in the right position ready for the penalty kick! If the assistant thought it wasnt handball then he would wave his flag to get the referee's attention and explain it was a header and not handball. But he didnt wave his flag. He agreed with the original decision by the Referee that it was a penalty as he went into the right position ready for the spot kick. So if the referee - who had a clear view - immediately award the penalty and his assistant get into position, how did the referee come to the conclusion that he was wrong? Regardless if the end decision was right or wrong, if the referee awarded it and his assistant agreed, to then change his mind is very strange.

Do you think Darrell is just saying that to just play it down as we won anyway, wanting the credit to go to his players for the win instead of the penalty decision deflecting attention away from the result? Some players via twitter certainly believes it was a penalty. Blissett himself feels like he has been mugged off by the referee!

I've no idea if Darrell said it for that reason, he might have done but that's as clear as the possible handball. As for Nathan he had his back to goal so he wouldn't have seen what happened but can understand his feelings if he has been given the perception it was handball.

Judging by the pace of the ball after connection, it would appear to be a great headed clearance!, I would have thought the ball would be less pacey if it connected with his arm!, well that's my tuppence worth!...

The linesman certainly was lining up for the penalty kick before the referee came over being pursued by the Barnet players.
And yes, I do think that whatever anyone may think privately, Darrell is saying the decent thing in public in order to concentrate on the performance and result. He may feel that way for real, he may not. But I think he's right to be nice about it.

The angle the player was falling at coupled with the fact that the ball goes upwards from below the players head ,indicates his arm lifted the ball up and over the bar. If it came off his head it would have ended up in the back of the net. And look at the players reaction afterwards!! He was hardly in a hurry to get up off his feet and purport what a great goal saving header was he?? This was just another match official charade in Conference Football in my humble opinion. Luckily the decision had no bearing on the result.

I don't think any of this description matches the video. The player is jumping and not falling at the point the ball arrives and that ball has hit something hard and flush in order to bounce up and continue in the same direction ( ie a head), not a flailing arm. When the player gets up he looks confused as to why anyone would think he has handballed it.

I think you are totally wrong but there you go. It was a penalty in real time, Tuesday night, and it more than confirms it in my eyes after seeing two video clips on here.

At the training ground yesterday. MM appealed as he wasn't sure, every other player admitted it was a header. Even Luther accepts it was a header having spoken to the others. He admits he wasn't in a position to know himself having gone over backwards trying to get the ball in.

Luckily the decision had no bearing on the result. Firstly you're quite right about the match officials, after all it's not the first poor decision that we've been on the wrong end of, is it? But secondly and much more importantly, we won the game 2-1 didn't we? Whether it was or whether it wasn't is a moot point now. This thread reminds me of the controversy following Geoff Hurst's goal in the 1966 World Cup Final. Was it a ''goal'' or not, did the ball cross the line? End result England 4, West Germany 2, so we won.

I don't really see how the result of the match has any bearing on whether it should have been called hand ball or not.
