It’s strange nine years on and a thread is reactived. I remember Claude and Derek at the time, when I used to frequent the ‘Kenny’ in Redland -I recall. Claude was the quieter one and smaller wheaas Derek was as tall as me and had an infectious laugh. Another memory from those days me and another mate used to drink in a ‘ci#y’ pub just up from Bridewell Nick - the bar was accessible via stairs to first floor. It was a lively ol place and it sold Breakers which was a very strong lager. Thinking back now it was well known as a ‘ci#y’haunt and yet although quite a few knew (it rhymes!) I was gas I was never made to feel uncomfortable. In fact one night in particular illustrates that; MJ (no not Michael Jackson), was taking the shortish route to a confrontation armed with a knife climbing over tables knocking the odd beer over on the way, and (unbelievable Jeff) apologised to us when accessing our table.. Very funny times indeed! I agree,it has been an interesting read. The pub that you mention was the Wheatsheaf, there was often trouble in there and for a while Dessy Mc (rip) a well known Rovers lad was the bouncer there,it was rare then for pubs to have doormen The Wheatsheaf was the first place that I heard 'gas' and 'gas heads' mentioned, calling someone a 'head' was the same as calling someone a 'mong' now and usually lead to a fight. Avon soul army mentioned earlier in thread used to meet in the Guildhall tavern just around the corner from the Wheatsheaf, Broad street. 'badbloodash' was correct in what he said about stabbings outside the Queens Head prior to a derby game, one lad who was stabbed was from Southmead. As I remember it the Princess Court (I think that the full name was actually Princess Court theatre club) had an entrance on the small street that connects Park Row to Park street. So many pubs from those days are long gone, the Sceptre was a meeting place for Rovers supporters at one time, anyone remember the Crown & Dove ? the Way inn ? Pretty sure that Claude's brother Derek died a couple of years ago.

Wayne Hussey the lead singer of The Mission and ex Dead or Alive and ex Sisters of Mercy told me he used to be a regular watching Rovers from the North Enclosure at Eastville and that his favourite player was Frankie Prince. He said he later moved to the north west and then followed Liverpool as his local club.

Regarding Depeche Mode, when we played at Twerton, I and girlfriend at the time went into the Seven Stars pub for an early pre-match pint. She was wearing a Depeche Mode Violator t-shirt. There were some guys in the pub and she said a couple looked like they were from Depeche Mode. They noticed her t-shirt but nothing said. It would have been around end of 89/90 or begining of 90/91. Fast forward a couple of years and I was with a different girlfriend and visiting her parents up north. It came on the radio that Depeche Mode were going to be interviewed on the radio including their "bizarre love for Bristol Rovers" or words to that effect. I was thinking WTF maybe it was them in the Severn Stars. Unfortunately I didn't get to hear the actual interview as the girlfriend had other ideas. I've noticed that Depeche Mode have at times since said they don't support a team.

My eldest sister went to school with Wayne Hussey, the Ridings at Winterbourne, i bought God's Own Medicine and loved Wasteland.. Snap! Also Becky Bondage of Vice Squad went to the Ridings. Of course re-branding means it's now called the Winterbourne Academy. At least it looks like they've dropped the laughable Winterbourne "International" Academy...
