Russell Howard was born in Bath. His extended family are mostly from Midsommer Norton. Attended school in Bedford, 6th form in Alton, Hants and then UWE...spent 6 yrs from 99-05 playing gigs at places such as at Bristol's Comedy Box, The Bunch of Grapes, Richmond Springs and Ashton Court Festival So he is a fake then. He could still come from a Gas family.

He could still come from a Gas family. Indeed. I mean more about him growing up being a Bristolian.

I've never heard anything about Massive Attack or their acolytes stabbing Rovers fans, like the other poster said they were too young surely ? I went to Primary and Secondary with Claude Williams and he started following the Rovers first.

You must be joking anyone who knew the mob from massive attack evolved from the wild bunch would strongly disagree with you when they weren't mixing vibes they stabbing rovers fans all around town and were responsible for major injuries outside the queens head before Derby game jan 80 I had many a run in with them must notables in princess court club which I still have the scars from although to be honest they were quite even handed would glass women as well as men Jan 1980 - when Rob and Grant were 14 and Mushroom and Tricky would have been 12. Nellee Hooper was 16 at the time so possibly more likely but I'm still sceptical tbh Claude Williams and Milo Johnson were a little older again - but the Massive lads were only kids at the time His names is miles Johnson and he got 4 years after that game although what he got jailed for he didn't do but was stitched up lad who did it was from lockleaze and if you read my post you will see I didnt say massive attack were involved I said who they evolved from as for no stabings I think about 8 people were hospitalised before the game and if Rex is who I think you are ask your mate reg about it I ended up in frenchay helping him out

Russell Howard doesn't seem to claim to be from Bristol...in direct interviews, he openly admits to being born in Bath.
Think the press/internet pick up on the accent, the fact he went to UWE and did the comedy circuit there, and just write crap......even Wikipedia is incorrect

Everyone always ends up helping Reg out, at his age he should have learned to look after himself by now!

suprised that no one has mentioned Sean Michael Verey (real) and Roy Cropper (fester fan) who are also linked to us as famous fans.... where/what is Princess court? Don't know it but possibly it was a club around the Park St / Park Row area. Until recently there was a pub on Park Row (further up from the White Harte, next to the Skater shop), called "Prince's Bar", which I think is now a karaoke Bar. Some more names to add to the list: Music / Radio: - Ray Smith (of Smith & Mighty). - One of the other guys in Roni Size / Reprezent (Si John?). - Steve Yabsley (Radio Bristol & co-writer of 'Turning Up The Gas'). - Kevin Greening (former Radio 1 weekend breakfast show DJ). Cricket: - David 'Syd' Lawrence (Glos CCC & England). - Martyn 'Benny the' Ball (Glos CCC & England). - Peter Trego (Somerset). - [strange one as he was down in the programme to play for Rovers v City in the 'Legends & Celebs' game a couple of years back, but couldn't make it as it clashed with a Somerset game] Rugby: - Duncan Bell (Bath & England). - Ben Gollings (England 7s specialist). - [another strange one, I don't know the connection but he played for Rovers in a 'Legends & Celebs' game] Boxing: - Chris Sanigar. - Glen Catley. - Lee Haskins. - Duane 'The Gasman' Winters (soon to be famous, that is). - Tim Witherspoon - [amazingly, he turned out in the quarters in a 'Legends & Celebs' game]. - Jane Couch. I'm sure I'm missing a few boxers. More than once I can remember watching the boxing on Sportsnight and hearing strains of 'Goodnight Irene' from the audience. Occasional visitors to Box 1: - Eddie Large. - Noel Edmonds. - Kelsey Grammer

Syd Lawrence is most definitely not one of us!
Steve Yabsley was my best mate at school and he wasn't really interested in football, but as I used to go out with Glen Catleys sister -hark at me with all the celeb friends-I can confirm that the Catleys were all Gas
Ross Hale was the other boxer who was Gas.

Ross Hale was the other boxer who was Gas. Yes! Ross Hale, thanks. Syd Lawrence has spoken about Rovers a couple of times on interview. He was filmed at Wembley in 2007 going crazy ... but that might be the only time he's watched us! I wouldn't say he's a regular! Just recalled a couple of others that have been interviewed at half-time on the pitch: - A young lad in some BBC kids show (don't know his name, but sure it's not Sean Michael Verey). - A women's snooker champion (again no idea what her name is, the only name I know is Kelly Fisher and it wasn't her!). Yabbo has been to the odd Rovers game over the years. As you say, not a big Rovers fan, but probably sided with us due to being a Fishponds (Whitehall school?) lad, and the influence of you and others at school. Another to have played for Rovers in the 'Legends & Celebs' local derby. Oh yeah, almost forgot, was very surprised how well Jeffery Archer knew about Rovers. He was interviewed on Radio Bristol before the W-S-M v Donnie FA Cup match. I guess he might well have genned up in advance, thinking he might be asked about Rovers. His knowledge was good. Probably hasn't been since the 70s though!

Yeah, he emigrated to Japan maybe around 20 years ago and has done alright for himself there I think

I went to school with Glen Catley he was a year below me and used to catch the same bus to school when he lived in Stapleton as a kid, to be honest although he favoured Rovers he wasn't really into football as obviously boxing was his main love.I m sure his elder brother Gary was more of a gashead. On another note can anyone remember Tony ( smiley Miley) Miles from the Radio 1 roadshow days ? Sure he was a Gashead through and through.

Like you, I also went to primary school with Claude & Derek, I too believe that Claude followed Rovers, not sure about his big brother though!..

Princess Court Club, was a late 70's night club that played Funk music, was a top club at the time, on Park Row, off Park Street, I used to go most Friday/Sat nights, used to meet up at the Assize Court pub, near small street firstly, which was a mostly Rovers pub, and known to be, can remember a rough night one Saturday when it was converged upon by many upset and angry C*ity fans, needed to barricade the doors and windows, and repel borders!!.

Steve went there in the 70s, I didn't go quite as often as I was supposed to I didn't realise he played football for us in the charity game, we must have been desperate- he was s**te at school!

Glen was only about 9 when I went out with his sister, and yes you're right, it was more Gary who was into football, or that was certainly the case at the time.
The Syd Lawrence thing is odd. He was on Question Of Sport once and a clip was shown of Rovers and Spurs and David Coleman, or whoever it was then referred to us as Bristol. Lawrence corrected him saying it's Bristol Rovers and then someone asked him if he was a fan, he said yes, then after the question was answered he backtracked and said he was City! I used to see him up at Dings when his lad played there- I wish I had asked him now!

About 4/5 years ago , me and my Plymouth mate knocked off work early one Friday because it was a Friday and we were having a heatwave so popped into the John Cabot for a couple , when we were at the bar getting served there stood Sid Lawrence we started talking about England cricket and soon changed the subject to football and Bristol Rovers and came straight out and asked him if he was blue or red , " I'm Rovers through and through " was his reply not only that he hates City , he was very knowledgeable about the team and squad etc but said he had only managed to get to a few home games the season before and how he should make more of the effort to do so.
