Last match apart, we have not done well against them then. Hoping for a much better performance and much better defending

Doubt that anything will change even if we lost 9 -0 to them. B***** is here to stay until he decides he has had enough imho

One of the best football books I have read recently was Ben Smith’s “Journeyman” (2015). It’s an account of his career between 1995 and 2012, in the lower leagues at Yeovil, Hereford and Shrewsbury, among others. There are five references to Rovers.
A large chunk of the 250-page book, however, recounts his time at Crawley Town, under Steve Evans. Ahead of our match tonight, I thought I would review Ben Smith’s recollections of him. There are some pertinent comparisons and contrasts to be made with our own leader.
Ben Smith observed that Evans had an insatiable appetite for winning, wanting players to get the ball into the box quickly, without playing what he called “five-a-side football”. He had extensive knowledge of the lower leagues.
After a defeat, it seemed common for Evans to unleash: “You’re finished at this club. You will never play in my team again”. His players soon got used to his bullying and rants. After losing an away game there would have to be “a period of mourning on the coach journey home. After a defeat at Morecambe, someone laughed. [Evans] warned the next person who laughed would have to make their own way home”.
His comments were “scattergun”: “you cannot play for me…you take too long on the ball”. But after the match: “you were s**t tonight, but we would not have won the League without you.” Ben Smith considered “I was pretty sure these outbursts were pre-planned”.
When Ben Smith first played for him, Evans had to serve a thirteen-match touchline ban. He used to have loads of £50 notes on him; “his favourite tipple - pink champagne”.
There were plenty of examples of his “vivid imagination”, threatening the players. Much of the discipline was petty: double training sessions; early starts; training on your own; washing your own kit; no food after training.
“It brought us all together with one common objective: resentment of the gaffer”.

Thanks GasMacc1, I haven’t read that book. I’ll look out for it. Someone else who doesn’t seem to like SE, sounds like my kind of footballer! 😉

I am still recovering from that efl trophy defeat it was particularly shocking
How can a club like this be seventh and us seventeenth worrying indeed.
The squad will be depleted during to injury suspension tonight and I have a bad feeling Stevenage will be more Street wise and turn us over...which leaves the Cobblers on Saturday a real six pointer.

Evans has a much better track record than B***** though - in all likelihood with much smaller budgets than Poundland Pep has enjoyed. Wonder how he does it if his players hate him that much?

Close in the bookies. Gas win 6-4 Stevenage 7-4 Draw 5-2 I'll go for an ill-tempered draw between two ill-tempered managers.

We're looking very poor. Yet again we're creating nothing.

ONE NIL DOWN!!!!!!!!!! Our club currently is mediocrity personified both on and off the pitch. 'Mediocrity' is something to aspire to at the moment. This is dire. However a lot of new faces to bed into the side, and I don't think this side is at risk of relegation. Give JB until Christmas and then reassess. Martin should not be a problem playing as a target man with Collins and Brown playing off of him, but he sounds poor. Cox at fault for the goal and doesn't sound an improvement on Belshaw. Just like Balcombe last season. What was it Einstein said about doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results?

Surprised the Ref allowed the game to proceed as the Behemoth New Shed is blocking the floodlights from illuminating the goal and first 5 yards of the pitch, what a mess. Why is the new shed so tall?, perhaps will be two tier in the future?, bet you can’t stay dry if it’s blustery and raining.

Much has been made of how this is 'the best squad in Rovers history' tm. So we should be able to cope with injuries and suspensions without too many issues. B***** was also able to put out, on paper at least, a strong team.

2nd half as dire as the first.
We really can't wait till Christmas.
Message to our new owners... please hire a competent manager as soon as possible.
