Just inquisitive as to what former Rovers player went on to become the best manager of any team ,my thinking was of Gerraint Williams 🤔

In terms of placements then Gerry is a shoe in but Gould had the hardest job when no one wanted the job, when we went to Bath, very underrated and much maligned but did a great job on a very small budget.

Holloway by a country mile, took Blackpool into the premiership when they were favourites to be relegated, spent no money and had average gates of 8,000,i can't think of any other manager anywhere that could compete with that.

One Promotion, a betrayal at Plymouth and when they were challenging and he , himself, aregrees if you read his book. He took on Palace when already in the play offs. I have to disagree as his career went from pillar to post and he admits that he lost direction and his way. Fxxxed up the nearly season, by not replacing Mauge, then got pushed and we ended up in the 4th tier for the first time ever. Please don’t get me wrong as i love the bloke as a man and as someone i see/saw fairly often and he would often have time to talk. As a player, legend but as a manager then he failed as Blackpool were down the following season and they never really have been stable since. Both Francis and Gould did much more and in much worse circumstances. Both are worthy of high praise. I think you are looking at the painting but not seeing the picture, no offence meant fella

Aidy Boothroyd saved Watford from relegation then got them promoted to the Prem. He won a tournament with England -21s. Not a bad record.

Tony Pulis promotions and never relegated Cliff Britton Everton manager and successful in 1950s and Hull City in 1970s Phil Taylor Liverpool manager in 1950s Phil Taylor lived to the ripe old age of 95, and was believed to be the oldest living England international footballer at the time of his death, one of the last surviving players to have played before the Second World War. He died on 1 December 2012. As Liverpool manager his record reads Played 150, W76, D32, L42 = 50.67% Win Ratio. Taylor could not get the Reds out of the 2nd division so resigned after a poor start to the 1959/60 season after 3 seasons in charge. He was succeeded by Bill Shankly. Taylor's legacy to Liverpool was the back room team he assembled of Reuben Bennett, Joe Fagan and Bob Paisley. All three were retained by Shankly, who together with them built a hugely successful club. Promotion was achieved in 1962. Of the players who were signed or given debuts by Taylor, one was the legend Roger Hunt, who spent 11 years at Anfield and scored 286 goals.

Harold Jarman, took over at Rovers when they were struggling and kept them up....his reward was to be sacked, the next season Rovers were relegated.

Ady Boothroyd?
Probably not the best (as title reads), but acclaimed in England set up. For some reason.. (?)

Intelligent and skillful player for Rovers. As a manager, he was criticized a fair bit for his tactics, and never really recovered.

Think that beats it easily.

I suppose this thread shows that some of our players have been pretty decent managers so we’ve got a fair few to choose from. Pulis, Gould, Francis and Olly are the pick. Although I would love to have seen what David Williams could have achieved if he’d stayed as a manager. Gerry probably gets it for position in league but if pushed I’d still go for Olly. The football his teams played in that 99/00 season and what he did at Blackpool and other places before it all went wrong showed he did it for a fairly lengthy period. And I loved his press conferences, guaranteed to make you laugh. A flawed individual and manager at times but very honest and his positivity knew no bounds, most if the time.
UTG!
