Great news
Glenn Whelan quality, experience and well known by Barton. Final piece in the jigsaw.
Should be a major influence setting up goals.

Glenn has played in over 730 games and earned his 90th cap against Switzerland in October 2019 making him the ninth most capped Irish player of all time.
On 4 September 2021, Whelan joined recently relegated League Two club Bristol Rovers on a one-year deal, linking up with former Fleetwood manager Joey Barton having trained with the club for part of pre-season.
Glenn has spent most of his career at Sheffield Wednesday and Stoke City and a short spell with Aston Villa.

He must come in second in a list of players with most international caps and to have played for Rovers. Vitalijs Astafjevs still claims top spot with an almost impassable 167 international caps.

If you’re going to create a DNA for the club of developing and selling on young players, then you decide to scrap it, you may as well scrap it properly and some

If you’re going to create a DNA for the club of developing and selling on young players, then you decide to scrap it, you may as well scrap it properly and some With the increasing amount of players being vacuumed up by clubs higher up the pyramid then maybe there will come a time when L1/L2 clubs should charge prem clubs to give the young players game time. Maybe, lower league clubs need also to mirror the coaching techniques and environment of prem clubs if there is to be a reciprocal loan relationship. We may be getting closer to a system when younger players long-term contracts become 'part owned' between prem clubs and lower league clubs. This seems a more sensible compromise then asking lower league clubs to $1m+ to fund academies for young footballers who will get poached by the big boys if they meet a certain standard.
