www.bbc.co.uk/sport/rugby-union/55951014"Former England captain and Bristol hooker John Pullin has died, aged 79. Pullin led England to historic victories over New Zealand, South Africa and Australia over an 18-month period in 1972-73. He also played seven games for the British Lions in South Africa in 1968 and New Zealand in 1971 - helping them beat the All Blacks in Dunedin. Pullin, who balanced work as a farmer with rugby, made his Bristol debut in 1964 and played 298 times for the club. "As a hooker he possessed incredible strength, and he was renowned for the speed of his striking in the scrum," a Bristol website obituary read. "He had bravely battled illness for some time, continuing to work in all weathers. "John will be greatly missed by his many friends at all levels of the game, and all at Bristol Bears send their sincere sympathy to John's family at this very sad time."" Probably the best (if not well known) try of all time - was for the Barbarians against the All Blacks in 1973. John Pullin was part of that side and the passage of play that saw Gareth Edwards score at full stretch as the All Blacks were run ragged from one end of the pitch to the other. Pretty sure my Uncle (Mike Pegler) would have played with John in the front row of a strong Bristol RFC side of the late 60's early 70's. RIP John Pullin and condolences to the family.

Yup - still gives me goose bumps. Me too, this was my earliest rugby memory (along with that midweek rugby league knockout cup they used to show on the BBC in the 70s- what was that called?) As great as this try was, take a look at the attempted conversion that followed and indeed even Pullin's line out throw!

Not forgetting the 3 or 4 yellow cards that would have been handed out for high tackles in this day and age... dirty All Blacks. Some things don't change (Sorry JeffNZ). Many happy memories of watching Bristol RFC at the Memorial Ground in the 70's.

I don't think it would be just the All Blacks who would be caught out by stricter refereeing these days Like football, it is open to debate whether things have changed for the better!

The All Blacks had a terrible record for foul play. I think it's a lot better now, with enough cameras pointing at the pitch. It's NZ's national sport and national obsession. A win at all costs mentality, always has been. For the record I really like kiwis. But they have a blind spot when it comes to violence on the rugby field. Sorry to digress. But people like John Pullin were unbelievably bloody brave to (quite literally) go into battle with them. There's plenty on the charge sheet. But inappropriate to bring it up now. So I'll leave it there. RIP John.

It's that try, he was the only Englishman in the line up I believe I admit I had to look it up. I was pretty sure David Duckham also played (he had a stormer on the wing). Also apparently,Bob Wilkinson played 2nd row. Who knew? It used to be a tradition for the Barbarians to play an uncapped player and from the line up I'm assuming that was Bob.

Morgan commentated the try: Kirkpatrick to Williams. This is great stuff. Phil Bennett covering. Chased by Alistair Scown. Brilliant! Oh, that's brilliant! John Williams, Bryan Williams. Pullin. John Dawes, great dummy. To David, Tom David, the half-way line! Brilliant by Quinnell! This is Gareth Edwards! A dramatic start! What a score! Oh, that fellow Edwards!" A start to the 6 nations today. But a bit like my interest in the premier league... has largely dissipated in Covid times. Fleetwood/Gas is where its at.

I love it, it looks like the 70s, cold and everyone wrapped up with scarfs, like the old MOTD footage of the time. Great commentary
