There are some great versions floating about on youtube.
The white stripes, or maybe under jack white comes to mind and also Tom Waites.

My favourite things about 'Irene' are that it's a folk song nobody knows who wrote, singers can make up (even ad lib) their own verses and still expect their band to join in at each chorus, and every version is very different (and they are many).
I can't imagine having the time to bother hating a version.
It's a song.

The best version is sung live at the Mem, especially in certain circumstances when rings out around the four quarters..
The second best version is sung live at opponents ground where they are privileged.
All else fades into insignificance..

Bryan Ferry does a good, (more in the vain of the original) version. Heard it first after a drunken night bickering with t’other lot in the Avon Packet about how they had nothing unique about their club. Got home and it was playing on TV, The Old Grey Whistle Test I think.
