The goodnight Irene they played at the recent match v Darlington on live TV sounded absolutely awful. It may well be the original but why can't we play a recording of gasheads singing this with proper passion. I felt embarrassed listening to that being broadcast all over the country and beyond.

Everything's awful, Deggers. Everything there ever has been. It's a wonder any of us still bother. Awful.

What, the one that was being played just before kick-off? By a group of Rovers fans under the name "Maximum Roverdrive"? ... the recording of gasheads singing this with proper passion?

I'm not a huge fan of the 'Maximum Roverdrive' version, especially the guitar solo.
In my mind, to be played at the ground, it has to be a cover at the same tempo as The Weavers version - the one fans first picked it up from. Problem for me is there always seems to be a section that I'm not keen on, by the various artists over the years, like the 'choir of angels' spoils Nat King Cole's recording.
The version that seems to fit the bill best for me is the one by Rolf Harris ... unfortuntely I can't see that one being played again any time soon.

In truth nearly all of the sport on the box feels the same to me. Rugby or football the lack of crowd is awful, whether in a big glossy stadium or not. Actually that Marine game in a ramshackle ground with the old guy on the ladder, now that was good to watch, but I suppose only as highlights. But we scored 6, albeit against a non league outfit, but we have a prem side next, that's something right?

Try the Sensational Alex Harvey Band version. Wait! Alex Harvey did a version of Goodnight Irene! You've just made my day! (But it couldn't possibly be better than his live version of 'Next' - spine chilling!)

Half Man Half Biscuit also did a version. They went to Wembley as Tranmere fans when we played them and loved the Rovers fans singing it so started playing it at gigs.

Try the Sensational Alex Harvey Band version. Listening to it right now on YouTube, it's an upbeat type of Chas and Dave catchy number. One of my favs from TSAHB is "Give My Compliments To The Chef" on OGWT. Such a tragedy Alex Harvey died in 1982 aged 46, the day before his 47th birthday. Alex Harvey was like Beefheart or Zappa, a genius standing on the edge of a cliff. His band were very colourful, wacky, daring and a very tight live act, like Dr Feelgood.

All over the country and beyond, ha! I think the audience is pretty limited tbh. Its probably just the only version they are allowed to play and broadcast and/or the cheapest to license.

It sounds f**king pathetic to me a gashead for 40 years. What must it sound like to someone who hasn't been a gashead for 40 years. Even more pathetic would be my guess. Lets get real here surely we don't have to play proper recordings anymore.

What I find bizarre is that there is a match day announcer and music being played in the first place.

Best version is Jack White's or mine after stopping off at all the pubs down the Gloucester Road after the Dagenham game

Trouble with the Darlo TV screening is that the whole world saw our awful ground. The broadcast too was very amateur and despite the great win it didn't show the club as a whole in a very professional light. We really need to sort the stadium as many years ago we were told it wasn't worth improving as we would be moving. Not sure how long the EFL will allow us to play with such Dickensian facilities when most non league grounds are far superior and have modern disabled infrastructure. The 'Irene' rendering I agree was somewhat deflating.Still loved scoring six goals and didn't correct my young Grandson who watched at his home in Nantwich that we were in fact not playing away as he assumed!!!

Trouble with the Darlo TV screening ... I note on the Gaschat forum (I don't have an account there), that you are moving to Colyton in Devon. Is that so you'll feel at home with Stafford Cross just down the road, and Stafford Brook babbling away close by? :-) You'll only need to take the 'shire' bit away from your profile name!

Yep,have seen the signs. Thanks for that.Hope to move by end Feb.Local team in the Devon and Exeter League but will also be checking out Axminster and Honiton who play at a higher level than the village team.25 miles or so nearer to the Mem for Gas home games.Hope we are allowed back soon before we move as Crewe currently is only just up the road.
