... today, defeat to FGR 4-3. BG wanted to get more minutes for certain players, plus it gave him practice in saying “disappointment” and “positive” (3 in 1 min 14 sec interview).
Still individual pre-season results are not overly important, though many will believe we should be able to beat a L2 side.

Some smartly taken goals on what appears to be a decent pitch and weather, disappointing to concede 4. Hope we are not so generous when the season kicks off!, plenty for BG to input onto his laptop, yeah, righty ho!.

It would never have happened if Craig, Clarke, Menayesse, Reilly, Nichols, Ogogo and Bennett had been playing.

Truth is, whenever you change centre backs you struggle till it settles down. Even if we have here what goes on to be the most celebrated defence in our history, until it gels it’s going to be a disaster zone. Example? What do you think of Tillson? I expect a positive opinion, but not one you would have given after his first six months. There is technique. There is physicality. But football is a mentality game. If I knew my first choice defence for this incredibly hard start, I’d play it in every friendly and ignore mix and match, game time for all, etc. Match fitness? There should be some serious 11 against 11 games in practice this stage of the season, preferred 11 v their understudy’s.

There was a very strong wind throughout this game, I'm not sure to what extent this helped with some of the set piece goals.
Generally, noone should be going over the top because of pre-season results. I'll admit I was a bit disappointed in the performance - at least from what I could pick up from the interrupted streaming of the game. With an opposition team willing to press us, we seemed unable to play out of our own half without playing it long or getting caught in possession. The two free kicks that led to goals and a lot of self-imposed pressure came because of the back 3 being unable to effectively link with the midfield.
It was ironic that our first goal was a long ball to JCH. Because FGR were playing a high defensive line, I thought we could have exploited this a little more.
On the positive side - plenty of players got 90 minutes under their belt. JCH scored 2 and looked a bit happier with himself.

It was played at Stanley Park in Chippenham. FGR have trained their for the last 3 years.
You may be right, or wrong. I still wouldn't read too much into a pre-season friendly for a number of reasons.
My view is that the missing element is already in the building, i.e. we need Abu Ogogo's bite in midfield.

I would be happy to see Abu stay and like a few now think, without more bite we may get overrun in the middle of the field.

I'd keep Ogogo and let Upson go (duck) Upson has looked one of our best players in pre-season. I'd say that Westbrooke and Upson are similar, whereas Grant and Ogogo share some similarities in playing style.
Although we've brought in leadership in Ehmer and possibly Baldwin, we need a midfield general. It is as plain as day that Ogogo fits that mould unlike anyone else in the squad.

It could be worse, could be 4-0 down after 40 minutes to Ashton Utd and scratching around for a decent striker............and you've got Tom Nichols as a trialist ?!
Inbreds and roundabouts pulled 3 back but still lost and look desperate..

Jeez Ashton under Lyne is 175 miles from Bristol and the team is nicknamed the Robins. Something going on here.
