You were scouted yourself, so do you look for gems in non-league?
Yeah have always done it – at Rovers and QPR. Clubs don’t do that enough these days. Because what defines a player is, can they do it in front of a crowd? I played with some great players down the years that could never play in front of a crowd. When put in real pressure they wobble.
A lot of clubs now play under-23s, which gives them a safety net. You don’t get someone slaughtering you in the crowd like you do in non-league.
It has to have an impact, and better players have to be exposed to that as quickly as possible otherwise you will keep making the same mistakes with no consequences. It matters, winning and losing. In under-23s it doesn’t matter to anybody.
also....
They need a ground, but I always thought they needed a training ground first. You start with a training ground, that’s where you breed your players. Where everyone can train, and be proud of. That’s how you attract players.
Even back in the day when we were training at Hambrook, and at Eastville Park, Frys, we have never owned a training ground. And every training ground has been a disaster.
In my scouting role I have been some of the best training grounds in the world.
When you got the quality of the club, you generally go to the quality of the training ground. Liverpool, they did Melwood, before they redeveloped Anfield. Man City did the training ground first, every big club does.
You can’t make players better on a Saturday on a pitch. That’s the end product. All the work is done in the week. It’s the key to success.
