What can I say but deja vu or another case of promising a lot but delivering very little. Ok we played well first half against the conditions but the signs were there to be seen that back to a back three we were torn open quite a few times in the first half where the wingers were not marked and got into our penalty area to pull the ball back where only fine defending stopped goals. The football to watch is better than under GC but the organisation and toughness to beat is gone and replaced by a mistake ridden team with players being asked to do what they are not capable of. Yes it would be great to see a team playing the way Sunderland or Coventry play but that way of playing does not come with a lack lustre midfield and defenders who's passing ability is probably the weakest of their qualities. I know it is going to take time and luckily GC gave us that time or we would be back to the end of DC's reign where we were fighting relegation and looking certain to go down. I just don't see the one forward working because neither winger looks likely to score, our midfield score very few and so it is all down to JCH. Even Nicholls and JCH looked more likely to score and that victory at Ipswich looks a long way away now.
Nothing will convince me that a constant playing with one up front will bring success and the quicker we see either Abrahams or Daly up top with JCH the better. IMO too many coaching badges can sometimes be a bad thing because what is ok for Manchester City and Liverpool is not suitable for a Bristol Rovers side with three midfielders who can't muster a bit of pace or creativity between them and defenders who at the end of the day were good at what they were doing under Coughlan but now look like accidents waiting to happen. The only thing I see as clear is that the only way ahead or plan is to do things on the cheap and that come the summer we will see any player who is on a reasonable wage and at the end of their contract will be out the door and replaced by freebies, loans and youngsters.
Blackman 7 Didn't do anything wrong but not really a Man of the match but overall it was difficult to select a Man of the Match so I haven't!
Menayese 6.5 Reasonable game strong in the air and done OK but he is not a full back in any form and too often the formation didn't work
Kilgour 6.5 Same as Manayese
Craig 6 Caught for pace and IMO starting to look a liability at times under the Garner regime but there again in the first half the three centre halves all did a good job to cut out the balls into our area from wide positions where we were cut open. When down to ten players they were all exposed for their deficiencies.
Leahy 6 I am really not sure about what he adds to the team. he played OK but like most of our players lacks real pace and his defending is questionable and is his offensive work really good enough to warrant his place in the team.
Upson 5.5 I'll say it again if he had been playing for Sunderland and winning and giving the ball to their players he would look good but in our side with the present players it just is not working and as a unit we were second best all game.
Ogogo 4 Stupid to give the referee a decision to make with the red card which of course pretty well gave the game to Sunderland. Without the red card my comments for him would be the same as those for Ollie Clarke.
Clarke 4.5 Cannot fault the effort and Commitment but anything other than that and I am struggling to think what he adds to the mix.
Ginnelly 5 Similar to Mitchell-Lawson. Tricky and skilful but it is never going to work with two wingers and a midfield who rarely score.
Clarke-Harris 6 Worked hard throughout but he is our only hope of a goal and for me home or away you need support and the quicker BG sees this the better.
Mitchell-Lawson 6 promised a lot and worked hard throughout but it was always going to be tough and he is not going to score many..
Subs: Rodman 5 Ineffective in a short appearance
Barrett 5 Did Ok but the game was over
Harries 5 Looks to be a good passer of the ball but came on in centre midfield even though he is essentially a centre half and the game was over by the time he came on.
Crowd 9 To have nearly a thousand but probably nearer 1200 is amazing for such a long journey and they are sticking with BG and the team and are a credit to the club. Does the club deserve them? NO.
Ref First half 9 Second half 0 Overall 4.5 Can't really criticise the red card decision although it was a bit soft but the decision to play on with the clash of heads was an absolute disgrace and he only had to look at the players to see that it was a bad clash but could so easily have been really serious. What is really frustrating about it is that most games this season we have had to put up with opponents feigning injury (Not head injuries) and the game being stopped straight away even if we had been in a position to score let alone a free one against one.
Sunderland 7.5 A good team but also a typical Parkinson team who knows all the tricks in the book to fall down and get away with it. It was a bloody long way for nothing and for that alone I hope they go up! Unlike us their wide players play wide and tactically we never conquered this and it was impossible when we were down to 10.
BG- We can play all the formations and nice football we like but until we can replace the midfield and also have a strike force rather than just JCH then we are doomed to the odd win and a very frustrating time. It doesn't matter what Manager you are there are horses for courses and at the moment we are not really at the races. Ginnelly and Mitchell-Lawson both look good but neither are going to score many goals and who knows anyway if we are going to be able to keep them next season so what is a long term project may turn out to be very short term and we will have to start again in the summer. it has to be said that we are not getting much in the way of run of the green at the moment but perhaps we are not helping ourselves. The first goal was really down to only having 10 men, the second a farcical refereeing decision and the third summed up the day with a terrible deflection off our player.
What would have been without the sending off who can say? I always felt they were going to score even though overall it was a good first half performance. With the weather conditions in our favour second half I felt we should have gone more attacking in the second half and brought on either Daly or Abrahams and Barratt for one of the wingers and Ogogo.
What do we do next week in what is a game that we should be going for a win? my main consolation is that BG cannot now play three defensive midfielders with Ogogo suspended so that has to be a plus! personally whatever happens I would start with two up front! UTG
