This does look like a good appointment to me. We still have the 'backroom' staff of Maher, Mansell, and Hargreaves, and Widders has beefed up our scouting regime (albeit form a low base). I'd rather an appointment like this than another journeyman Manager who knows it all and brings in over-rated old pros to under-achieve in League 1 on high sign on fees and wages.

It's a brave appointment but he was heavily in the running last time.
It is unusual for a Rovers manager to be starting his job while 4th in the league instead of 24th.
It certainly takes 1% of the pressure off and also, GC walked away, the club didn't choose this situation so he'll have a decent honeymoon period even if we come 12th, I would say.
I would rather JCH stayed of course, but if he doesn't, it'll give BG (am I the first?) the chance to get his own people in or get a tune out of whoever is left.
We could end up with one of these new breed of managers like Eddie Howe who likes to get it on the deck and insists on fitness from everyone. You never know. He's unlikely to be a long ball manager with his reputation.

There is no doubt this appointment has a level of risk but given the pedigree of BG as a coach, past mentors and his tenure in the game, it's a calculated one. I think that overall it's a good appointment and I'm with davehuddscousin re the retaining of the core backroom staff. BG is no journeyman, on the contrary, we now have a young ambitious manager with good contacts and a few battle scars to hold him in good stead. I'm sure Gasheads will get behind him but let's also give him some leeway if the odd result goes against us in the first few months. UTG

I think this appointment will be a total disaster. If the wael dream of cat 2 academy and state of the art training facility had actually happened it might make more sense. But a young coach facing losing his best players and playing budget cutbacks is going to struggle in my view. Criticise the board by all means for making promises that have not been kept. However, it is unfair to criticise them by assuming that GC left because he was told he would have to sell players or make budget cutbacks.
This is an assumption that people have made on the basis of GC's self-serving wails that he might have taken the club as far it could go. Rather than citing 'professional' concerns, GC should have clarified that he was given all the support that he requested when at the club and that he could have no complaints about the level of support he received. Starnes has made it quite clear that GC did not express any concerns to him. Yeah, even Ferguson said it's not surprising we're 4th with the players we've got, and who bought a lot of them in if not Coughlan? Fans believe all sorts of nonsense about the club, the AlQ's and Coughlan, most of it beer talk that becomes Chinese whispers etched in stone, like boring long ball tactics. I've been a bit confused as to why so many fans took a disliking to Coughlan. Is it his inarticulate manner, his bullishness or the fact he appears to have been instrumental in getting Clark sacked, as one fan said? And there's me thinking Clark did a pretty good job of getting himself sacked + he was at the 3 to 4-year stage when things start going tits up for managers. GC rescued us from the drop last season and has got us to 4th in League 1, the highest we've been since the late 90s(?) and yet people are glad to see the back of him. I don't get it.

He comes across well in his first chat. He does'nt want to rock the boat, but keep the team ethic and fighting spirit alive and well. Will listen to coaches, find out all they know and overtime add a few ideas of his own. Fair enough.Commonsense. He has a healthy respect for Bristol Rovers and Gasheads and wants the club as far as he can. I assume that means the 2nd tier.
I reckon we might have a good in in Ben Garner.

The football under Coughlan was often dire, he wasn't particularly likeable (see his petty spat with Chris Lines) and he wasn't Darrell Clarke. He was also widely viewed as a 'yes' man for an unpopular regime. Fans saw him as out for himself and the manner in which he left the club confirmed they were to some extent right. Even his post-leaving interview with Radio Bristol was all about him. In a way he did the club a favour; in my opinion, they are well shot of him. DC played the martyr when he left, but must take a substantial amount of blame himself. The board would have been justified in refusing further transfer funds after the Nichols transfer alone.

Ben Garner strikes me as a 'man with a plan' regarding his career, so in that respect I don't think he will be here long if he is successful. My prediction is that he will get us into the play offs and then leave to go over the river when Lansdown finally loses patience with Lee Johnson.

Managers are like buses you wait for one and four come along in a week! He will be gone by New Years Day and Hargreaves installed as BG does not like being away from Palace. As I was buying our Coventry tickets in Rovers Superstore at 9am I saw Wilfred Zaha with BG selecting a xl Rovers shirt ready for the press conference it seems like JCH is Palace bound in a straight swap ! Did you mean to post this'un as Kegan, Mike?

He is obviously a very career minded bloke and I'm sure he won't be falling in love with any club but want's to get as high as he can, which lets face it, he won't with us. I think he may well be okay for us, I just don't think he will be around long.

What was notcible against posh and muff compared to earlier in season was the zip and pace to our play especially from the starting whistle, so maybe it was nt the formation or players that got Cocko the deadly football tag, just the time needed for the strategy to bed and confidence to tick up?

Are you just saying that so you can say 'I told you so' later, or do you genuinely believe it will be a disaster? It's a matter of perspective but 'a disaster' in my opinion would be us getting relegated by appointing Ben Garner. I just can't see that happening. If we are having cutbacks then it doesn't matter who is appointed, it will be a negative outcome as nobody will be able to achieve instant success. At least Garner is saying 'we could build something' here at Bristol Rovers... I just believe we should have left things alone and carried on with maher until the end of the season. If your 4th in the league at xmas a disaster would be 10th at the end of the season imo. Like i said before he fits in with the wael dream but we know that dream is not happening any time soon.

Most supporters I know could not understand how we were 4th. And now people are putting pressure on new manager saying if we go down the league it's all his fault!

I think you're right there because he started by getting the defensive formation sorted, so logically the midfield came next. The first thing I noticed was the unleashing of Tony Craig, who Clark played in a straitjacket in comparison. Coughlan's formation had the centre backs doing more running and pressing, which got the best out of Craig and we saw a different player altogether. Coughlan's midfield was a bit headless chickens when Ogogo and Clarke played deep with Upson in front of them. With Sercombe out injured and Bennet out of form the midfield lacked any real creativity. Maher was lucky having a fully fit Sercombe to pick against Posh and he made all the difference with his link up play. I prefer Ogogo to Clarke because he's more professional and far less impetuous. All teams need a midfield cruncher but Clarke goes too far with his niggly fouls. Be interesting to see if they move Bennet on in the window and try to get someone else in to fill the creative void. We need an experienced striker to partner Clarke-Harris because Nichols, imo, is a waste of time and socks and the two young loanees, try as they might, are not really up to it yet.

I think you are right, Clarke must have a 1 yellow each game ratio. I see Clark and Ogogo as different types of players though, Clark more of a attacking threat of a player, but they are similar in both at their best in run of games, coming in from an absence without match fitness they are a yard down on what their game needs. At first Upson was playing alongside Clark and Ogogo as an anchor and it wasn’t working as well as Ogogo ball winner beside Clark or sercs and Upson in front defence as a sort of deep lying play maker. Like my dlp to pass better than he did last Saturday though. so is it a hand injury keeping Ogogo out? When’s he likely to be back?

I have nothing but admiration for Ollie.A few yellows in this day and age is near impossible to avoid. Also, if Ollie has an off day passing wise, manyy in the crowd get on his back, but they fail to notice the crunching tackle,or block or heading fuel competed for within moments of off pass. Ollie never goes missing. Some Gasheads are keen watchers of when we have the ball ,but I'm afraid they don't get it when the opposition have the ball. Ollie is an excellent player.
