The Club would like to state its strong disapproval of some of the chants used by supporters on both Saturday 24th and Tuesday 27th August. Since the conclusion of our Carabao Cup fixture against Brighton, Bristol Rovers have become aware of homophobic chanting targeted at the away end. This is in addition to the unsavoury chanting about the former player, Matty Taylor. As a club, we are strongly against these actions and are taking appropriate steps to tackle this issue so it does not happen again. Homophobic chants are an offence, and incidents like these will be treated as such by the Club. Security Staff and Stewards will look to identify supporters or groups of supporters acting inappropriately whilst within the stadium and once identified will be ejected and appropriate details will be obtained with the help of the Police and appropriate bans will be imposed instantly. Bristol Rovers is a family club, we take pride in our community and ability to offer a space where everyone, from every walk of life, can feel accepted. Waiting for the first "snowflake" or "banter" comment. Some of the people involved with homophobic crap often seem to have doubts about themselves to me. Sad twats.

I was at the game and thought that the chants were in very poor taste. Embarrassing.
However, I am frankly bored of waking up every day and having to read hundreds of episodes of moral outrage. Social media is leading to a warped society, when everyone feels entitled to gob off, with more hyperbole to stand out.
Ignorant people go to football, herd together and reveal their ignorance.
However, without the herding and the chanting, football would have no atmosphere.

And the best way to deal with this problem?
Is it to have Elton John and Peter Thatchell screaming 'homophobe' in the face of anybody who disagrees with them on things like gay marriage?
Or is to acknowledge that a substantial number of people (more than acknowledged) do not fall into either category (homosexual or heterosexual) and that people are not required to define themselves in terms of their sexuality?
My preference (you may have guessed) is for the latter........

The best way is for people to challenge bigotry when it happens. Face to face. Sometimes impossible when it is perpetrated by a group.
The reality is that outraged has become the new norm of expression. Embarrassment summed up my mood, especially as my wife is from Brighton.
The only time that I have been outraged recently was when I saw the new Family Stand for the first time. Now I am just embarrassed to see it. Meditation classes really help to add a perspective.

Could somebody explain please Allegedly the so called "gay capital" of England,certain area Kemp Town is noted for it's GAY/LGBT ? community, not that you would notice if you walked through it!! [we have/did for about 8 years whilst our son lived there, otherwise its a very popular and great social experience is Brighton... |

in relation to the homophobic chants where Brighton are concerned , several people across the country have been fined where it has occurred at football matches where B&HA are playing, so they can take a risk or just grow up .......

These same people are keeping the club afloat at present. Crowds are down drastically , the only place that's buzzing is the north terrace. Family club , all other areas are half empty. Any chance of decent football so we can concentrate more on the match rather than the opposition. That's down to coughlan. Yes these responses from club are just protocol.

I wasn't at the game, but apparently Rovers sang 'We can see you holding hands' to which the Brighton fans responded with 'You're too ugly to be gay'.
I find it very difficult to believe that anyone was offended by either chant , I don't think either is homophobic and both could be considered mildy amusing (if I hadn't heard them several times before)
I find it tedious in the extreme that the club feel duty bound to roll out a standard 'blah, blah, blah' statement on such matters.

Down at the DSS Arena they threw a wobbly because the supporters wanted to show a big England flag the day they played Cardiff. I kid you not, the stewards stopped the flag being shown. |
