Can't believe this myself, nearly choked on my corn flakes. Anyone else have any thoughts?

Yes Jayho it is strange. After what he did and then went through I would have thought it was a desperate measure on both sides. He needed a place to settle back into cricket with as little publicity as possible, get some scores, keep a low profile and be humble. Now he will lead up a club, be high profile and be making all sorts of on field decisions. I can hear now the calls from the crowd esp if he ever gets to play in Taunton which is unlikely. Durham needed an experienced, hardened cricketer not a youngster who will be mentally unsure abou5 his reception. Every action and decision will be examined in minute detail and everyone in England will be waiting to pounce on what he does. And in conversations with his players he will not have their respect but, I suspect, their questioning disrespect and he will have to earn that respect. A few low scores early on and the pressure is on. I may be wrong and he smashes it. But in April in England on Durham’s pitches and his problems with the off stump I somehow doubt he’ll get off to a flyer. His record with Gloucestershire will hardly inspire anyone to think he’ll be a great success but he may prove me wrong. I’m presuming that he’s been told he won’t play a part in the World Cup or the Ashes for Australia which is strange in so far as he had a pretty good BIg Bash for Perth. Also surprising as Justin Langer, his long term mentor, is the Oz coach and likes Bancroft and had recommended him to Somerset. Yet they’re counting the days until Warner and Smith are back. But, he was the guy who was set up by Warner and Smith so he has a degree of sympathy from me and I hope he makes a success of his season with Durham. Good luck to him and Durham.

I'm not that bothered about it really. Of the 3 involved he seemed the one who was probably most harshly treated given his junior status in the side. He hard deserves to be ostracised for life. Durham have a problem in that they lack senior players with Collingwood's retirement. It's a gutsy call but it could be the making of both parties. From his point of view, if he's a success then it's chance to create a completely new narrative around his career. It's also quite a low bar for success given Durham's current situation. If they're not utterly terrible then he will be deemed to have done a good job. One thing's for sure - they'll have the best looked after cricket balls of any county!
Bancroft's joining a small army of Aussie fringe players in county cricket this year looking to catch the eyes of Ashes selectors.

Well irish I can see your argument and he was made to look silly and easy to manipulate but certainly deserves to get forgiven and continue his career. Durham needed an experienced older pro probably from elsewhere to cover the lack of senior players. And you’re right it is a gutsy call but with the season starting even earlier than normal I’m glad Somerset won’t be going to Durham in April! Gutsy or risky or foolhardy I don’t know. If he is hoping to catch the eyes of the Australian selectors for the Ashes then I would imagine, if successful, and he does gain a place for the Ashes that he would seriously jar off Durham. That will just confirm what many are already thinking about him. As I said I hope he makes a success of his season with Durham but if he does and then leaves Durham without their captain it would be the last thing that County needs after such a disruptive last few seasons. I just think it’s a strange decision making him captain, a player I can see and understand but captain with all the accompanying responsibilities I just find baffling. Time will tell.

Perhaps irish, but can you imagine the banter if he scratches his bottom or puts his hand in his pockets or if Durham take 6/7/8 wickets in a session with a swinging ball. I hope it would be good natured but cricket crowds can be quite cruel! 😉

No, playing in Chester Le Street in April with his problems around the off stump is certainly not taking the easy way out! I really wish him well and good luck to him whilst the other two are making millions in the IPL. I seriously hope he does well. It all starts again this Friday, Somerset v Kent. Can’t wait, don’t think we’ve played Kent in a 4 day match for about 10 years.
