This may, or not be of interest to the very few of us who like cricket. Went to Taunton yesterday and had a quick look around the County Ground. They have now completed the new floodlights, 5 of them and they are very tall and very noticeable, all over Taunton! I have to say it is impressive but not all the locals agree, obviously. It has transformed the ground from a neat, organised smallish ground to a much grander setting. You can sometimes go to a town and see the football floodlights which stand up above the skyline but I never thought I’d see that in Taunton. Obviously there are limits on their use, 27 times in this first year to allow for testing and I think 19 occasions in the second and subsequent years. First use in April.

I was in Taunton last week and saw the floodlights from the Crown Trading Estate (As you said you could hardly miss them) I was wondering how I had never noticed them before- now I know!

I was visiting family about 2 minutes from the ground. You can see the lights from their front door! From the Crown trading estate they would be very noticeable! Did you think it added to or diminished the skyline?

Well I like a floodlight, even if it does belong to the carrot crunchers They look identical to the ones at Glos, except I prefer the ones there much more

Fair enough. Perhaps I’m one of a rarer breed. Rovers and Somerset supporter, not Rovers and Gloucestershire. Mind you it does mean I watch cricket with a fair few of our friends south of the river! 😉

I didn't know this was happening and I can't really imagine it to be honest!
I've spent a lot time in Taunton over the year (both watching cricket and otherwise) and I just can't get my head round what this would look like. Not surprised it's raised some objections. You can't stand in the way of progress and all that but I've never really forgiven Somerset for getting rid of the little 2 tiered stand with the theatre seats in it to make way for the new pavilion development. That was the best view in the game in the comfiest seats you'll find at any sporting event!

If you know Taunton when you come in from the east, from the motorway along Toneway and approach the town you become aware of them and they are very tall! Higher than St James’ church tower right next to the ground. I went three weeks ago and two were up, went last week and all 5 were up. As Rex said they are very similar design to those in Bristol for Gloucestershire. Seeing them for the first time I thought Wow, they’re tall! Those two little stands next to the old Stragglers pavilion had seats from the old Gaiety Cinema on Station Road, and that closed in the 70s, I think. It was a great view, I often sat there. And you could see the Quanticks and the Poldens without a stand in the way. Sit in them in April they were a bit cold and damp from the winter whereas in July and August they were perfect. Don’t think they would have fitted the newer, posher, more modern feel SCCC like to portray now!😉
