I bought two Adult Ground Entry tickets for tomorrow's (Friday) RL 50 over game @ Taunton, starting @ 11am. Unfortunately, for family reasons, I can't now use them. They cost me £20 each in advance; admission tomorrow is £25. If you could use one or both @£15 each (ono!) let me know. I live in Bristol and will ensure you have it/them by the end of the day.

I have just got back from the rain affected match. As a Somerset fan I’m glad the rain came to give us a point but Gloucestershire were going to walk it. We were really lucky, rain came at about 3.30 when Gloucestershire were motoring but only in the 6th over and you need 10 to have a match. Somerset were going well with Trego and Hildreth at 145-2 when Howell produced a great over to get Trego and Renshaw before Somerset collapsed with two poor run outs. Gloucestershire bowled quite well after Trego was out. They stopped Somerset scoring and from looking at a score of 350+ Somerset limped to 220. They must be really jarred off with the weather. Bad luck!

Went to the Hampshire v Somerset one day match on Wednesday. Best one day match for a long time. Over 700 runs good competitive cricket and result in doubt until the last ball of the day. Great entertainment. Shame that Somerset didn’t qualify but it didn’t matter really and we knew that if Essex won it was all over anyway and we knew that from early on during the match. James Vince and Alsop putting on 188 for 2nd wicket was model way of playing limited over cricket after losing a quick wicket. Vince really should be No.3 for England. But then I’ve seen him score 200 and 100 in the last two innings I’ve seen him so I might be biased. But Somerset were excellent. Chasing a record score they were never behind the clock and looked comfortable to win for most of the innings. After his heroics at Headingly Dom Bess went for 34 runs in 3 overs! He might only play white ball cricket now but Trego certainly plays it as if he’s able to concentrate completely. Looking forward to his 20 20 performances after this one. It was a great advert for one day cricket. Shame there weren’t more people there to enjoy it.

It was a great advert for one day cricket. Shame there weren’t more people there to enjoy it. I watched that one on TV - it was a great finish! Seems a shame that both Somerset and Gloucester came up short after promising starts in the tournament. I was at the Roses match on Tuesday which was also a high scoring thriller. Lyth and, particularly Willey, hit Yorks to what felt like an insurmountable 380 (Old Trafford tends to be low scoring). But Lancs didn't fold. Jennings provided a good anchor and Livingstone played a superb innings (one that should have selectors interested it was that good) to get them properly into the game. He scored 75 at a strike rate of nearly 200. It was a superb exhibition of modern one day batting and it was thoroughly necessary. Then Villas came in and carried on where Livingstone left off and there was a moment where amazingly the game seemed to have tiled in Lancs favour - they needed 140 off the last 20 with 7 wickets. To get to that point chasing 380 was pretty remarkable really. Unfortunately, it fell apart at that point. Having done the hard work Villas and Jennings both threw their wickets away and I was thinking game over. However, Hameed kept Lancs in it with a very useful 30 odd - hopefully this is evidence that his confidence is back, I think he needed to score a few easy one day runs to get him going again. He was then removed by a stunning inswinging yorker from Willey - best ball I've seen all summer, deserved to be a match winner. Again, I was thinking that's it game over. But a very unlikely 50 run 9th wicket partnership between Bailey and Parry had Yorkshire genuinely rattled (Plunkett completely went to pieces and should have been taken off for 2 waist high deliveries) before Willey returned to polish things off with an over left. Excellent match - I don't normally enjoy high scoring limited overs games as it gets quite repetitive and I like balance between the bat and ball. But this was an exception because the pendulum swung throughout the whole 2nd innings. Bizaarly, Lancs should probably kicking themselves they didn't win it despite having to chase down the highest score ever recorded in a 50 Over game at Old Trafford!

I saw the scores and watched on website as Lancs chased it. Must have been good to be there. It just looked to me that had one of the Lancashire batsmen had gone on to a really big score then they would have done it. I was convinced Hampshire would just about do it thinking that despite the great scoring rate, it’s hard to keep it up for 50 overs but fortunately all our players made contributions despite fairly good bowling from Hampshire. Strangely Dale Steyn was the weak point of the Hampshire bowlers giving away 54 runs from the first 5 overs. Better at the end but still gave away a bad over which was vital. Watching the two teams was very interesting because despite being close geographically the teams are very different in their approaches. Somerset field with a lot of energy, pinging balls into the keeper and around the field with lots of calling out, quite a noisy approach which is a follow on from the Justin Langer era esp now Andy Hurry is back as DOC. It’s a very boys together full of energy approach. Even when Hampshire were motoring they kept up their approach and encouragement. Hampshire were the epitome of cool. All were very composed and were far quieter. Dropping 5/6 catches didn’t help but James Vince captains in a very understated way but is obviously very successful having qualified. Watching so much live cricket I find it fascinating to see the differences in captaincy, team approaches when under pressure and the body language players use when it’s good or bad.
