Yes - to me Jimmy Armfield really was the voice of football.
I was born in 1983 so my football coming of age was just before the kind of 24 hour football news cycle and live games nearly every day of the week from all over the world. It was one game a week on TV and whatever was on the radio. So for me Jimmy Armfield, Alan Green and Mike Ingham were football really.
He really was a superb commentator - added genuine value, was honest about what he was watching (no hype and no Alan Green style Eyeeorishness either) , clearly understood the game inside out and had taken time to note the ways in which it had changed over the years therefore completely avoiding the dangers of 'back in my dayism' which did for quite a few from his generation.
There was also a genuine empathy with everyone in the game and a love for the sport that shined through which made a vital corrective to today's atmosphere where nearly everyone has cynicism levels set to 11.
He will be much missed.

The thing people will forget with Armfield is from 62-64 he was voted the best rightback in the world. His overlapping helped Ramsay come up with his "Wingless Wonders" ~ a formation that we've seen a lot of this season. Armfield's importance is underrated and often overlooked. He really was a fantastic player.

I think he was badly injured 18 months before and lost his place to Cohen. Was still in the squad but didn't really get a look in again. I think he was injured for the tournament as well, might be wrong.

Well presumably he must have been in the squad because he had a medal apparently. I think I heard him say that he was never the same after that original injury. Shame the club he played for is currently in such a miserable state.

Listening to 5live tonight at 7.00 when they were giving a tribute to him he did lose his place due to injury. But he came back from it and they said on there that he actually captained England against either Finland or Yugoslavia in June 1966 a month before the WC. Got injured again and never played for England again! But he was never bitter and was pleased to be in the squad. Always came across as a fine man as well as a very good footballer. Footballs loss.
