Optimists might consider that the departure of Billy Bodin represents an opportunity for someone else in the squad. Tom Nichols’ performances for Rovers so far this season have been mainly disappointing. Some think we don’t play to his strengths; others think he’s simply not good enough in League 1. Yet Tom’s record for Peterborough last season - ten goals in 43 League games - suggests that he can score at our level. Might he yet make a contribution in what remains of the current campaign? I decided to dig up the details of Tom’s performances in season 2016-17 at Peterborough, in case it reveals any clues to what made him thrive there. You can’t score if you’re not in the team. How often did Peterborough play Tom Nichols?
Tom Nichols scored ten goals in 43 League One appearances for Peterborough in 2016-17. Of Peterborough’s 46 League matches, Tom started in 37 of them. He played a total of 3041 minutes over the season. That is the equivalent of just under 34 full 90-minute matches of playing time. Of the matches in which he scored, he came on as a substitute in only two. In contrast, for Rovers, out of 26 League matches so far,Tom has started 14 and appeared in another 12 as a substitute. He has played a total of 1340 minutes for Rovers in League games. That’s the equivalent of just under 15 full matches. In other words, for Posh, he was on the field 74% of the time, whereas he’s only been on the pitch 58% of the time for Rovers. In stark contrast, Tom appeared for less than an hour.in only eight of the 43 matches in which he played for Peterborough. But for Rovers, there have already been twelve occasions on which he has been on the field for under 60 minutes. Can we learn anything about the type of goals Tom scored for Peterborough?
Most goals were right-footed shots from inside the penalty area; Tom scored no headers. Tom scored more than one goal in only one match (against Chesterfield at London Road). The first table below gives a brief description of Tom’s goals. The second table below gives links to video where available. What’s the conclusion?
Off the top of my head, apart from one goal in the League, the best moments from Tom in a Rovers shirt have been the long-range curler at Bradford that hit the post (and Bodin followed up to score) and the dynamic header at Blackburn which curved agonisingly wide. But “long-range” and “header” are not the words associated with the ten goals he got for Peterborough. Conversely, I can remember a couple of occasions when Tom was in and around the six-yard box, with the opportunity to poach a goal, but the chances went begging. I’m thinking of the late stages of the match at a soaking Rochdale when the ball pinged around in front of goal, but appeared to bounce off Tom’s shin, and recently at the Memorial Stadium (Doncaster, I think) when if anything Tom blocked a Bodin shot! In fairness, Tom has been given only sporadic game time for Rovers. Perhaps with more minutes on the pitch, his record in front of goal will improve. I wish him well. Table 1: Tom Nichols' Goals for Peterborough in League 1 (2016-17) showing minute scored and minutes played.
1 | Millwall | H | W 5-1 | 67' | All | Stabbed home rebound | 2 | Oxford | A | L 2-1 | 62' | All | Right-footed from 10 yards after cut-back | 3 | Northampton | H | W 3-0 | 82' | 45' | Right-footed volley from 10 yards | 4 | Rovers | A | W 2-1 | 92' | All | Right-footed tap-in from 8 yards; cross from left | 5 | Chesterfield | H | W 5-2 | 1' | All | Steered in cut-back | 6 | Chesterfield | H | W 5-2 | 65' | All | Released to score with a smart finish | 7 | Bury | A | L 5-1 | 4' | All | Tap-in after keeper spilled long-range shot | 8 | Southend | H | L 1-4 | 80' | 31' | Right-footed shot from centre of the box | 9 | Rochdale | H | W 3-1 | 38' | 86' | Found space; low right-footed from edge of box | 10 | Chesterfield | A | D 3-3 | 17' | 71 | Turned marker in box to score |

In the first 15 games he started most of them and got the hook because he wasn't doing anything.
Any suggestion that he's a lethal finisher in the 6 yard box can be forgotten as well, last Saturday he was stood in front of the keeper, could have gone near post or far, no defender near him, his shot bobbled somewhere towards the corner flag, I was so busy laughing I can't even remember if it went for a goal kick or a throw.

Thanks for taking the time to research. I like Tom’s confidence and character which suggests he has hunger in addition to his skill and ability. It would be interesting to know what formation the push played when he scored, his assists created and his overall shot tally.

Nice to see a positive post about our player Marcus may be able to do something with him, but this is a lot harder than turning Taylor's career around, with Taylor the project started against pretty woeful opposition, L1 is a tough division. Wiki says that his actual record for Posh was 11 goals in 50 appearances.

You are Duane Dibley and I claim my reward Will Dubey I think I’d the real name and I don’t even known if he is still with us. If he was then this is precisely the sort of thing he was supposed to be employed for. Anyone know if he is still with us ?

Almost an identical post from january or thereabouts in the conference season but about matty taylor so maybe there is hope regarding tom nichols. Ps the matty taylor reference is from memory .

Thanks GasMacc1 good read and great research. Haven’t seen as much of him as others but I’m sure there’s a decent player there if we play to his strengths and playing so many 433 this season isn’t doing that. He’d be better in 442 but with BB going I don’t know likely that will be now. UTG!

Great research but with the departure of Bodin we need to hit the ground running with a goalscorer of proven goal scoring ability. We cannot keep waiting for nichols to come good that could see us relegated with not many games left.

Meanwhile in the league we have dropped a place to 15th. How we could do with a good result in next week's game against Blackpool, one place above us - still we'll have our new striker, midfielder, CH by then. :-)

were you turned down for the Will Dubey role GasMacc? If so, the club might want to think again...

Wiki says that his actual record for Posh was 11 goals in 50 appearances. Yes, that includes the single goal he scored for Posh in the 2 months he played for them in 2015-16, before he got injured in the April of that season. My analysis covered only 2016-17. For completeness, then, would you believe that that goal (which Tom scored at Chesterfield on 7th February 2016) was a flick from 1 yard out, after the Spireite keeper had dropped an in-swinging corner at his feet! It was the only goal of the game. You can see the same on this video clip. (Posh finished the game with 9 men, Michael Smith - formerly of our parish - being one of those dismissed). See goal from 2015-16 at Chesterfield on 0'43"
I only wanted to cover League games, thinking that any goals in the cups might be against (even)-lower league opposition, and then be unrepresentative of what Tom could do against League One opposition. However, for the record, in 2016-17 for Posh, he also scored two goals in the League Cup and one in the FA Cup. In the League Cup, at home against Wimbledon, Tom scored twice, the first with...a header! See goals on 0'53" and 1'46""Posh drew themselves level on 64 minutes, substitute Tom NICHOLS powering home a header at the near post after an excellent centre from Da Silva Lopes". "Two minutes into stoppage time, Posh got themselves in front and it was substitute Tom NICHOLS again, flicking home from close-range after Maddison's corner was headed down into his path". And finally, as if to hint that Tom can score at higher levels ( ), the goal in the FA Cup was against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge! "[John] Terry saw red for bringing Angol down as the last man and Tom Nicholls (sic) prodded in from six yards for a buoyed Posh".

All I know is that he's not doing anything for us right now, that needs to change. A good starting point would be getting his attitude right. He's just not trying. As you like video evidence, find some of recent matches where he's chasing down opposition keepers who have the ball at their feet, then compare to Ellis. Ellis does it with, as Mike Tyson would say, 'Bad intentions', Nichols looks like he's trying to run wearing a Chewitsaurus costume by comparison.
