I have found this way as a compromise by using a stencil. its not a full match report but best I can do and it only takes me thirty minutes to do! Your comments /opinions on this format/content would be appreciated.
Game No 1
Opponents
Charlton AWAY
Team Performance Mark out of 10
Smith Ok-could do better weith crosses 7
J Clarke Injured very early on N/A
Lockyer Passing awful,Lost player on goal 4
Broadbent Brilliant debut, strong and assured 7.5
Brown Crossing was bloody awful 4
Bodin Faded to oblivion 5
Sercombe Composed and attack minded 7
Lines Too deep but kept involved 6
O Clarke Not involved ,subbed too late 4
Sinclair Wholehearted, neither a wide midfield or full back 6
Harrison Punchless,lost ,rightly subbed 4.5
Subs
Nicholls tried hard but needs somebody to work with 6
Broom Not up to it yet but worked hard 5
Gaffney better than Harrison - Just!
Referee Poor ,sending off right but little else 4
Charlton Difficult to judge as went down to ten players after 6 minutes, held out well and fairly easily. 6
Team performance summed up Slow, predictable, punchless. Lots of possession but so little to show for it
Defence summed up Broadbent outstanding and didn't really get that tested as a unit but Sinclair not a full back
Midfields summed up Laborious, predictable, too slow but not helped by lack of width and oiptions
Attack summed Up Completely punchless. Didn't show up but to be fair the passes and crosses in to them was very poor
Man of Match Tom Broadbent- Great debut but unless he can play right central he will be dropped for Sweeney
Crowd Great support from over 2000
Final Comment My first opinion is that recruitment has left us with zero pace,no width and still without a leader of the attack. Need three players - 2 wide men and a centre forward. One up front is not going to work (back to John Ward tactiucs). The three players we need will cost good money

Your comments /opinions on this format/content would be appreciated. Dear Steve, Thank you for continuing to write these reports. The moment I saw your name as thread author today, after the first match, I felt the season had truly started. I love away games covered here on four threads each: - Memories of... - the thread for away travel nostalgia
- Kegan Deg BS - the thread for kegandeg to swear and beat his chest towards rivals' away support
- The Matchday Thread - irrational heat of the moment commentary and drunken opinion
- The stevek192 Report - the thread for all sober (in some cases hungover) post match analysis and debate
I will gratefully read such reports in whichever format you have time to produce. But I much loved and preferred the one paragraph (ending with a score) for each player format of previous seasons. So I must vote (as if we get to vote on how you spend your own time) for your old format. Yours sincerely, S. Hoveler

There is the other guy from Stoke who is a forward! Friend who works at the Bet 365 stadium with their youth set-up says,'You'll love Dom Telford'.Seems he had a hard time with injuries so lets hope he's the answer to our soporific strike force.

Agree that Lines was far too deep - he was almost playing like an American Football quarterback. But with Lockyer's distribution so poor perhaps he felt he had little option but to drop deep and pick up the ball. I didn't like Charlton's tactics but I guess we would have done the same if we were down to ten men. I did think they kept the ball well though and were far more street-wise than us.

Sincs is not a full back, we saw that at Altrincham, mind you we did pick up after that. I was surprised at the move to bring on Nichols, maybe an attempt to go into attacking mode, but the formation became unbalanced.

[br) I thought that DC wanted to bring on an attacker as they were down to ten at that point in the game. Sinclair was the only option at full back. Seemed a not unreasonable move at that point. OK,didn't work, but that's hindsight.

I agree bloogas, he changed the system straightaway after they went to 10. Typical DC changed it early and I thought SS did ok. We know he's not a RB but played as well as most and Lines too deep and we didn't see enough of his runs and when he did not sure the strikers were finding space ahead of him to give him options. Hopefully we will improve! UTG!

James Clarke was injured. Partington not trusted for that amount of time due to injury. Only other option was Broom to play there!

Great to have you back, Steve! Thankyou for taking time out again to write up. On other forums, it's rare to get an insight of the writings of depth like you take time to authorise here.
Totally agree with your summing up.
There were positives, but from unexpected quarters......btw the new away kit looks ace! Knew it would..

Always look for the report Steve. Generally agree with player ratings too - and when I don't it does me good to revisit my own judgements from a different perspective. I did slightly prefer previous format, but appreciate the time this must have taken every week and this is still a good read, so grateful for the compromise.
Let's hope for better for the next games...

Noticed on highlights footage that Charlton's number 6 Pearce appeared to spit on Sincs as he was led on the floor injured. Hopefully a lengthy ban comes his way.

Thanks Steve, I agree with most ratings and I like the new format. I won't comment on individuals but as a team it was a pretty shocking performance. I know it was only six or so minutes but right up to the sending off I hought we looked confident and pretty good, then we lost James Clarke and changed formation and it seemed to go to pieces. The free kick leading up to the goal (looked like a great save from where I was standing) was never a free kick.

Noticed on highlights footage that Charlton's number 6 Pearce appeared to spit on Sincs as he was led on the floor injured. Hopefully a lengthy ban comes his way. Yes, someone on Facebook highlighted it, so I replayed the video. It's disgusting. Spitting at an opponent is bad even in the heat of the moment, but this is pre-meditated and deliberate. Jason Daniel Pearce (born 6 December 1987) is an English professional footballer who plays for Charlton Athletic and is the former captain of Wigan Athletic. He plays as a defender. He was previously the captain of Portsmouth, Bournemouth and Leeds United. Pearce joined League One side Charlton Athletic on the 4th August 2016 for an undisclosed fee.
He'll only get a lengthy ban if anyone makes an official complaint. Has anyone at Rovers mentioned it?

I was only listening on the radio but i was frustrated at dc moving sinclair to right-back,if your down to 10 men and playing in midfield for charlton the last person you want chasing after you is bloody sinclair!

Spitting on someone is the lowest of the low, in sport or society. Let alone when a dude is on the deck having been snapped in a two footed lunge! Let's hope the Gas put something to the EFL/FA.
