Our first game is only five days away, so now might be a good point to consider how our current squad compares with the last one.
(I’m taking mid-September 2016 as the point of comparison, by the way).
No change…but better for the experience?
Thirteen “first-team” players are still with us. Most are in their mid-20’s, so should have improved having had a further year’s experience. Linesey is the only one over 30…let’s hope he has still to reach his peak! Ryan Broom has an opportunity to establish himself.
[Leadbitter; Brown; Lockyer; Clarke (O); Harrison; Bodin; Lines; Clarke (J); Broom; Moore; Sinclair; Gaffney; Kilgour]
Goalkeeper changes
Slocombe and Smith replace Mildenhall, Puddy and Roos. A “net” gain…sorry.
Defender changes
McChrystal, Hartley, Tyler Little, Connor Roberts and Clarke-Salter are no longer with us.
Broadbent, Bola, Partington and Byrne have joined. Again, we look stronger.
Midfield changes
Sercombe has joined us, but Mansell, Montano and Lawrence have left, together with Colkett and Boateng. (Gosling was already on loan at Cambridge from August 2016). It looks like we might be lacking a little strength in depth in midfield.
Forward changes
Taylor (18 League goals + 3 in the cups), Easter (4 + 1) and Luke James (0+ 0) have gone. (Jamie Lucas was already on loan at Boreham Wood from August 2016). The new face is Tom Nichols (10 + 3).
Youngsters
Could we add Kelly and Menayese to the list of first-team defenders? That department looks even stronger. Are Russe, Hargreaves or Ellington ready yet to be added to the current roster for the odd appearance in League One?
No doubt DC will be trying to get a couple of “forward-thinking” players in before the window closes at the end of August.
