That sounds like disaster waiting to happen - I think someone should do a study into whether there is a correlation between struggling League 2 clubs creating big name attachments and subsequent relegation out of the league. Herve Renard at Cambridge springs to mind but Exeter City took it to the next level in their Uri Gellar and Michael Jackson era....

Very odd appointment for both parties at the time. Ex-Footballers with international caps and a history of bumper playing contracts are seemingly very different characters to a squad player of a L1/2 club who doesn't know if they will have a 10 year career as a professional footballer and may have longer-term career planning issues. Some left field managers: Edgar Davids - barnet Sheringham - Stevenage Adams - Wycombe Gazza - Kettering Chris Sutton - Lincoln James Beattie - Accrington John Barnes - Tranmere When you also consider that Nigel Clough is the only former England international managing in the top two leagues then appointed good players as a lower league manager doesn't have a great track record. Gerrard baulked at the MK Dons scenario and the Neville brothers showed how I'll-equipped they were at Valencia. Interestingly DC is now the 14th in a list on managers who have been with their present club the longest

It's just that none of that career gave any suggestion at all that he'd have clue how to extract a club from an English bottom tier relegation fight! I don't find it massively surprising that people who played most of their career at a certain level tend to be better at managing at that level than people who are parachuted in from above. I have absolutely doubt that a manager like Mourinho would bomb massively at a lower league football club.

I also think it's crazy how some chairmen think people like Steven Gerrard are a better managerial candidate than people like Chris Kinnear. Higgs at least helped pave the way for DC to come to the gas, seeing the credentials for a good manager rather than giving John Terry a go at managing just because he's John Terry. I'd struggle to watch the gas if John Terry were manager. Cretin.

Uri Gellar, quite incredible, he did nothing that couldn't be achieved with £1 tricks from The Joke Shop on Christmas Steps, but people lapped it up. After a while I think he started believing it himself.
